How TV is covering the Newtown, CT, school massacre: For the most part, badly, inevitably

The horrific event at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, in which school children and adults were murdered and wounded, brought out the full force — the strengths and weaknesses — of TV news reporting. READ FULL STORY »

Last night on The Colbert Report, the host, fed up with the power of Michelle Obama to have already secured the upcoming season of Downton Abbey, exacted a kind of revenge of the polity. He got Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s permission to have the cast of Downton Abbey enact scenes from the upcoming season of Bad. READ FULL STORY »

'Homeland' review: Death versus romance? 'It wasn't even close'

HOMELAND

In a way, what this week’s Homeland was about was one of the most simple things imaginable for a complex piece of television: Allowing a love story to unfold. Which is a storytelling goal that will, I’m pretty sure, annoy nearly as many viewers as it pleases.

SPOILER ALERT: DON’T READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS WEEK’S HOMELAND. READ FULL STORY »

My Top 10 TV shows of 2012. Well, almost all 10 -- VIDEO

Below, my picks for some of the best TV shows of 2012, in handy video form.

Anyone who reads this blog regularly can probably predict a few picks. I’ll tell you in advance that I stuck to a list comprised of regularly scheduled series, no arch stunt-picks, like the Presidential election coverage or some wheezy old anti-Here Comes Honey Boo Boo rant. Upbeat, that’s my motto! READ FULL STORY »

'Nashville' midseason finale review: Narrowly avoiding 'Glee'-fulness, will the series find its way in the future?

NASHVILLE-HAYDEN

Nashville‘s mid-season finale on Wednesday night offered examples of what this fascinating production does right, does wrong, needs improvement on, and should just plain get rid of. Oh, plus one absolutely shameless scene that I sorta loved. The show is clearly a work-in-progress, but that doesn’t mean it’s in artistic trouble — it means the folks making this show seem to be trying hard to stay true to the pilot’s original conception and also reach out to a larger audience.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for this week’s Nashville. READ FULL STORY »

'Sons of Anarchy' season finale review: Bite your tongue!

The gentlefolk of Sons of Anarchy have long had difficulties with domestic and business relationships. It’s as though riding massive motorcycles, letting one’s hair become unkempt, and constantly being arrested were impediments to leading the sort of quiet, nurturing lives so many of the show’s central characters ardently desire. These difficulties played out rather dramatically during the Tuesday night season finale.

The 'Homeland' backlash: In defense of emotional truth

Wow, the internet is illuminated today with largely poor reaction to last night’s episode of Homeland. My colleague Adam Vary has done an excellent job in his EW.com recap of summarizing both the episode and the potentially objectionable plot twists. On Twitter, I made a joke — “If only Homeland was as plausible as The Walking Dead” — that was interpreted as being a slap at Homeland, when what I was really kidding was the “Homeland has become unbelievable” reaction. So I should make the case at greater than Twitter length here. READ FULL STORY »

'Boardwalk Empire' season finale review: The blasting conclusion to an uneven season

Boardwalk Empire wrapped up its third season on Sunday night in a hail of bullets and a haze of sentiment. Both elements were frequently effective, even if they could not help but remind you just how uneven, how ungainly, much of this season of the series has been. Going out with Patti Smith singing a lovely, strong version of “I Ain’t Got Nobody” added a coda to the way the show’s talent is, with regularity, insufficiently as well-utilized as Smith was.

SPOILER ALERT: DON’T READ THIS UNTIL YOU’VE SEEN THE SEASON FINALE OF BOARDWALK EMPIRE. READ FULL STORY »

'Liz and Dick' review: Lindsay Lohan did Elizabeth Taylor wrong

liz-and-dick.jpg

Liz & Dick was a peculiar, drab, damp little TV-movie indeed, wasn’t it? The opening seconds flashed a “based on a true story” message across the screen. But the “story” – that is, the life that Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton shared, chronicled here primarily during the 1960s, after meeting during the making of Cleopatra (1963) – was so much richer in reality than it was in this dinky, tin-eared production. Instead, the primary interest in watching Liz & Dick was to behold Lindsay Lohan trying, with varying, wobbly degrees of effort, to make her own career comeback.

In other words, when it came to Lohan “doing” Liz: She done her wrong. READ FULL STORY »
