It’s election season, so Saturday Night Live is back with its Thursday night half-hour somewhat-political-humor specials. As you could have predicted much — much too much — of the material was devoted to the 47% video, and unfortunately for SNL, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have already beaten NBC’s show to the satirical punch on that subject.
I laughed a few times. The notion of Mitt Romney getting into a Cash Cab taxi was both a clever idea and a brief but effective showcase for Tim Robinson as Cab host Ben Bailey. Bill Hader’s James Carville is always good for a chuckle, mostly for the way Hader plays him: as a self-amused cynic. Asked by Update anchor Seth Meyers whether he heard Bill Clinton’s Democratic convention speech, he said of course he had, because he always watched for Clinton’s “signal”: “If Bill pulls on his ear twice and says ‘magnolia,’ I’m supposed to kill George Stephanopoulos.” So shoot me — I like George Stephanopoulos jokes.
But this was also a regular “Weekend Update,” which meant a lot of non-political jokes that just can’t wait until Saturday, such as the news that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are reuniting, and so Stewart is “absolutely slouching with joy.”
Here’s a tip: Go here and look at some of the older sketches, especially the 1976 ones with Dan Aykroyd as Jimmy Carter; funny stuff.
It’s nice that new episodes of Parks and Recreation and The Office are also on this night.
