Politics on Tuesday TV: Rick Santorum 'Breaking In' as Mitt Romney goes up 'The River'

While the broadcast networks were airing new episodes of The River and the return of Breaking In (hoo boy, even Megan Mullally came off badly in that Christian Slater-led stinker; poor her), the real fascination was in the tight Ohio primary fight between Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, and President Obama’s press conference earlier in the day.

Both Fox News Channel and MSNBC said in various ways that the narrowness of the Ohio race was an important indication of problems for Romney going forward. Both channels pointed out the disparity in what the candidates had spent in the state — roughly $12 million by Romney; roughly $1 million for Santorum. Michael Moore, popping up on (where else?) MSNBC, asked what does it mean about Romney’s chances “if he can’t beat the guy who forgets to file the papers [in Virginia]?”¬†

NBC, with no Parenthood to air, devoted its 10 p.m. hour to the 10-state primaries hosted by Brian Williams, a rare network foray into live political coverage these days. Nice coincidence: NBC’s primary coverage occurred just after The Biggest Loser.

Earlier in the day, President Obama’s press conference included questions about Rush Limbaugh, his insults directed at Sandra Fluke, and the phone call Obama made to Fluke.

If you thought the news media was going move on to issues like Israel/Iran relations, you don’t know the media. Fox News has found a new angle from which to attack Fluke. The channel has decided to redefine the narrative by ignoring Limbaugh and re-labeling Fluke. Frequent Fox talking-head Bernie Goldberg called Fluke a “contraception activist.” On Fox’s The Five, Andrea Tantaros called Fluke “supremely radical” and part of the “fringe gender-mania.”

Fox needs to get all its channels in tune and on-message. If the Fox entertainment wing took, snipped, and used¬†“fringe gender-mania” to promote Fringe, the Fox News Channel, which gets much bigger ratings than the best sci-fi show on television, could do a lot to keep Fringe alive.
