'Beavis and Butt-Head' premiere review: Lashing out at reality; are you glad they're back?

They sit in judgment. Well, actually, they sprawl in judgment, their sneers at the ready. Beavis and Butt-Head may be the best TV critics ever, at least for a certain kind of TV. In the ’90s, they dissected the visual signs and verbal disconnects of music videos with the rigor of semioticians (Beavis and Butt-Head and Barthes).

Now in 2011, they’ve returned in Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head to succinctly dismiss the brain-draining stupidity of Jersey Shore (imagining J-Woww’s future with her grandchildren: “Grandma J-Woww, where did you get syphilis?”) and the poignant idiots on 16 and Pregnant (“So she’s not a bad actor, she’s a bad person”). Creator Judge brought his boys back on Thursday night with a new half-hour packed with both one-liners and sustained plots.

Exposed to the Twilight movies, B&B tried to get themselves bitten by a werewolf so they can score some hot chicks, but they mistook a disease-ridden street person for a werewolf. The poor guy happily bit them multiple times, but all they ended up with were scars and various strains of hepatitis. Even more intriguing was a beautifully drawn-out scene in which Butt-Head incessantly teased Beavis for crying (well, they were tears induced by an onion, but Butt-Head didn’t know that) — the taunting lasted for years, until we saw them as old men, still ragging on each other (“I was not moved!”). In both of these scenes, Mike Judge and company get at the root of B&B’s appeal — their shaky grasp of masculinity, which compels them to lash out at the world, including each other.

The neat trick Judge pulls off in the new Beavis and Butt-Head is in convincing us that there’s a substantive difference between the the slack-jawed mouth-breathers of 16 and Pregnant and the slack-jawed sniggering Beavis and Butt-Head do: The latter are blessed and cursed with self-awareness. (“How come we were born as us?” Beavis asked while watching an LMFAO video.) They know they’re wasting their time watching stupid TV and dreaming up stupid schemes. Yet Judge has them do these things with a lack of irony (also a hallmark of his frequently superb King of the Hill) that makes the boys active participants in their own humiliation — they get hurt, physically and emotionally.

It is, in short, great to have these genius cretins back among us, judging and being judged.

this show was crap i cant believe they made the garbage

    • A man

Well, 7 year olds don’t see the humor in this. Boo hoo.

      • Tim

you do realize the irony of your statement? When we were kids, our parents poo-pooed us for liking this “low brow” humor. That said, it’s good to have the boys back.

      • Brie

I never liked it. Then again, I’m black.

      • shou

Maybe even more hilarious than I remember leaving them so many years ago. • McFly

What the hell does black have to do with it?

      • rae

Im black and a woman and I thought it was hilarious… Especially Beavis’ werewolf howl… If you don’t like it don’t watch it..
no need for the I’m black b.s

    • MysterWright

You’re crap. What the hell do you watch? Old boy band videos and chick flicks? Go be emo somewheres else. Its like if you want to cry, I’ll give you something to cry about or something. Real men know that Beavis and Butt-Head are smart because those two know that stuff sucks and talk about it. Nowadays too many wusses hide out acting paranoid and ashamed of even liking to smoke. I mean really, who gives a f**k? You shouldn’t be looking to seem impressive if you really are impressive. You’d be better off a cocky sob that’s looking over your shoulder for whom you’ve already pissed off.

      • Jason

        Angry much?

      • Anon

Uh, wow. He only said that the show was crap, and somehow you derived that he’s emo, likes boy band vids, and watches chick flicks.

    • Are you for Real?

Beavis and Butthead was some of the best programming MTV ever had! Funny as ever!

    • @crap

So…you’re saying this show was you?

      • Rob

Probably crap got offended because they made fun of his/her favorite shows. Jersey Shore and 16 & Pregnant. Probably crap is as dumb as the people on those shows. LOL!!!!

    • Something Was Off About this Episode

I gave the first episode a shot just to see if the charm of the original series was still there. I think Mike Judge smartened the two slackers up too much. Some of the lines and comments from the boys were a little too cerebral even for their noggins. Just saying, not hating on it. I may give it one more shot, just to see if it happens again.

      • B

I actually loved it, and think it was actually funnier than it ever was during it’s original run – in part because there does seem to be a slight smartening. That said, I was elated when Beavis ranted about “FIRE! FIRE FIRE FIRE!” as he used to do before MTV lost its nerve. Glad to see they got it back.

      • @ B

I know what you mean. I guess it was just me viewing it with the remembrance of the original series. It was nice to see the boys back, though.

    • Rod Munch

Beavis and Butthead are back I can’t even believe it. They’ve been out of the game for years and they got a lot of criticizing to do. I’m so happy they are stiff doing the music videos. The MGMT music video was hilarious, I feel like their comments are a lot more funny. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was that beavis’s voice sounded a little different. But everything else was great. When their catheters had to be changed and they started laughing while in a coma, I almost fell out of my chair. I give it a 2 thumbs up. oh and crap stop being a cynical little asshole if you you hated it so much why would you take time out of your day to go make a post on a website about beavis and butthead? Go watch some teen mom and keep it to yourself.

    • Better Guy

You obviously must think B&B is below you. Why don’t you relax and enjoy some humor in your life jag-off.

      • Francisco

jon Posted on Swinging Bridges was the first hike I ever did on Maui, nearly 15 years ago. At the time I didn’t even reliaze there was any hiking on Maui. Back then I was very much the What why would you ever walk AWAY from the beach? mentality don’t get me wrong I love the ocean more than anything, but Maui’s got variety and it’s nice to explore.

  • This guy

take it ur some jersey shore lover? boohoo they made nothing but good points beavis and butthead kick ass

    • yowza

Go to eBay and search for “Marvel Beavis and Butthead” and you’ll find some of their BEST work (granted, it’s comics, not video, but it’s STILL some funny $#!t)!!

      • Americans Read?

You Yanks actually read?! I thought your criminal king outlawed that activity.

      • Ian

We don’t have a king. Only countries full of wankers follow the rule of a monarchy.

      • @Ian

Most monarchies are constitutional so therefore have no rule.

  • Bartleby

Maybe even more hilarious than I remember leaving them so many years ago. Thought tonight’s episode was pretty fantastic.

    • Felicia

Completely agree….So glad this show is back and the premier was pretty awesome

    • B

Agreed! Hands down, this was funnier than it’s ever been. I nearly spit out my coffee during the j-woww mockery, I was laughing so hard.

    • Kristen

Totally agree!!! The best part for me was the music video with the little girl. “How do you know he’s a pedophile?” “Because every pedophile I’ve met looks just like him.” And “We never should have sent her to Hogwarts!” Awesome. Purely awesome.

  • mikey

    It was excellent.
    Just as we remember them.
I thing this simple comedy is to complex for the younger generation, so if you are 20 and younger, you’ll hate it.

    • verne tanguay

im 18 and i love it, all of my friends love it. my parents hate it. and im sure when i go home on leave and i say next thursday dad put it on mtv hes going to sigh and be a little dissapointed

    • jp

have to agree, i’m 21 and barely remember when this was airing, but it is as good as i remember watching the reruns with the pops who luckily taped all of them, its like the 90s never left

    • cornhole

im 18 and i remember watching this and i loved it so obviously your an idiot and dont know what you are talking about

      • jak

Hahaha! You’re calling THEM an idiot? YOU’RE 18 and therefor should know it’s “you’re an idiot”, not “your”….idiot.

      • @jak

“Therefore” is spelled with an “e” at the end…just sayin’…

      • Daniel

You’re 18 and supposedly remember when they were on? Unless you can recall what you experienced at 1 or 2 years old, I call B.S. on your claim. Anyone under 21 or 22 need not be here.
That said, this was as awesome as I remember.

        PS- if anyone’s curious, I’m 24.

      • Ink

Are you an idiot Daniel? I’m 20. The show lasted from ’93 to ’97 and you’re telling us that there’s no way an 18 year old could remember Beavis and Butt-head? You’re a retard, an 18 year old was most likely born the year of the first season. They may have missed the first few but it’s highy likely they could remember the last seasons.

Not to mention there’s this thing called the internet where you can watch streaming videos of TV shows.

Let me ask you, Daniel, and all the other elitists: do you enjoy any TV shows from before your time? By your dumbass, elitist logic, you shouldn’t, because you’re not old enough to remember them when they were on TV brand new, so you should stop liking those things.

Seriously, that’s the most idiotic logic I’ve seen today. Anyone can enjoy Beavis and Butt-head.

      • Big James

@Ink: Beavis and Butthead fans calling each other elitists? Now that’s funny.

  • idviceroy

The angle of the dangle is directly proportional to the heat of the beat.

    • yowza

      MEAT, not beat!!

    • girl

I can not believe you said that!!! One of the funniest lines in Beavis and Butthead history. You rock and it’s good to have the boys back.

      • Jason

B&B stole this from Will Ferrell on SNL – sorry.

  • Mike

    I loved it

  • Matt W.

    That was excellent.

  • tracey s

    They Rock ” “

  • B-man

It was good but, nothing like the original hopefully the younger generation will appreciate it.

    • jp

it was just like the original, only difference is the generation doesn’t watch music videos so they have to hit reality tv

    • Superstarseven

Please. There was hardly a discernible difference between how the content of this new episode was handled and one from ’95.

      • Big James

I agree, its the same show.

  • Matt

Im glad Beavis and Butthead are back. I hope they keep ripping on all the Crap people watch today. Which proves my point over and over again…The youth today suck and are probably too stupid to pick up on their humor…..and the the 90s will always be better than today

    • yowza

There was an ECONOMY in the 90′s so . . . yeah. But the youth today only suck if you’re too old to enjoy life anymore Grandpa.

      • Grumpster

yowza…when you’re old, you’re going to diss the youth you have to put up with, ’cause they’ll be even worse than your generation. Youth today is not the same at all as in the past. They’d rather grab a gun to take to a fistfight, and fall apart and do columbine shootings when their feelings get hurt since they’ve never really had any hardships or real wars like WWI or WWI or Vietnam. Sorry…Iraq and Afghanistan are not even comparable.

      • @yowza

I’m sorry to hurt your feelings, but today’s youth really does suck. That’s a fact.

      • yowza

Well, BOZOS, I’m 60 and I wouldn’t be 20 again for anything. No jobs, huge college loan debts, no respect from zeros like Grumpster and @yowza.
Hope your spouses are as mean and sour as the two of you losers!!
My hat’s OFF to the youth of today. They are REAL HEROES to put up with this economy and you hooples!!

      • Lala

@yowza, I think they’re talking about teens, not 20-somethings. BTW, your cursing (and bad spelling) may be early signs of dementia.

    • Daniel

I agree; the 90′s were SO much better than the 00′s and especially now. Kids nowadays are morons. I look at my younger siblings (14 & 17) and I feel bad that they didn’t get to experience the joys of growing up in a time when MTV was still relevant. Not to mention they missed out on the glory days of Nickelodeon, another Viacom owned channel. I’ll take Rocko’s Modern Life and Nirvana over Jersey Shore and Lady GaGa every single day of the week.

      • Karl

        WORD!!!

  • Adrian Everett

Back to true Mtv Fashion finally ! Beavis and Butthead still have what it takes to make me laugh. WHat they did ot Jersey Shore and other Mtv Reality Trash Shows was beautiful. I hope Mike Judge gets them more funny and at the same time brutal on that crap.

    • Chandni

please get your head out of your ass thinking the guys here at OneDDL are rspionseble for the names fo the releases. it’s sceners, people that wouldn’t spend one second looking at a website like this and certainly not pay attention to a wanker like yourself.

  • allison

Beavis and Butthead was the only good programming in the history of MTV. I have not watched one minute of MTV since B&B ended the first time.

    • Superstarseven

I seriously doubt you’ve never watched 1 minute of MTV in 15 years.

      • Bill Wenham

Can’t speak for them, but I surely haven’t.

      • Ink

Why would you have to doubt that? How is not watching a channel for 15 years unbelievable?
Seems pretty believable to me. I’ve not watched plenty of channels in my entire LIFE.

      • Big James

I haven’t either. Last night was the last time since at least 1998.

    • frank

      blow me

  • SirPoopsAlot

They still ROCK as expected HAHA!

  • Anonymous

Hey, I’m a teen and I hate the crap they try to pass as entertainment now. I love this show. Just saw the new episode and it was great. And no, I’m not “too stupid to pick up on their humor”. Ignore those other brain-dead teens that make the rest of us look bad.

    • Ink

Just ignore the elitists on here. They hate to have new people liking their show…don’t ask me why.

      • Big James

We’re put off by skinny jeans, that’s why.

      • @Big Jame

        Hahaha, so true.

  • carol

They are back.Thank you Mike Judge

    • Brando

      Unbelievable!! What a show!

    • Alex

The best thing is they didn’t alter the style of the show and the animation looks like it did before. It works best as what it was.
