'Charlie's Angels' RIP: 'Angels in Chains'? Maybe Erica Durance should have starred in a different, solo-angel show...

Charlie’s Angels tried to tap into its source-show last night by re-working a script by Robert Earll that aired in 1976 and has become a bit of an Angels cult classic: “Angels In Chains,” in which the Angels went undercover as convicts in a jail in order to save a young woman. UPDATE: These Angels will be ascending to TV heaven — cancelled, Lynette Rice reports. Turns out my suggestion below that Erica Durance be given her own show from the Smallville producers was kinda correct…

With the first “Angels in Chains,” fans got off on the sight of Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson forced to strip down by a warden played by the magnificent cult actress Mary Woronov. (The damsel in distress in that episode was played by Kim Basinger.)

In 2011, it’s unlikely most viewers even know that Earll was riffing on the women-in-prison exploitation films of the ’60s and ’70s such as Caged Heat and Ilsa The Wicked Warden. So Thursday night’s new Angels episode was a hollow in-joke. The hour was redeemed primarily by a former employee of Angels producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar: Erica Durance, who played Lois Lane in Gough-Millar’s Smallville. Durance played a CIA agent/former girlfriend of Bosley’s, and as she did on Smallville, Durance invested the most banal dialogue with snap.

Unfortunately, the new Charlie’s Angels continues to be a botched project — not action-packed enough to work on the semi-serious level the producers seem to want (adding a back-story this week about Charlie’s dead daughter having been in love with Bosley is a stab at building the show’s mythology), and not campy enough to play up the visual naughtiness that made the original Angels a hoot. Someone ought to come up with a series for Durance.

I totally agree about Durance, she needs a better show than this piece of crap.

    • clearly

I have the perfect project for Durance – its called “The New Adventures of Lois and Clark” or alternatively “Superman”. Bring back Tom Welling and the rest of the Smallville gang and make a new show about Clark’s days as Superman.

      • Ms Saddie

        ok I love you

      • angela

We don’t need any more of Durance and Welling trying to channel Teri Hatcher’s and Dean Cain’s chemistry and failing miserably at it.

      • Chocobox

        Oh enough already!!!!!!!

      • shalimarfox80

That would be the best thing to happen on TV. Actually I think Tom/Erica would rock in anything. Their chemistry is that magical.

Let’s give Erica her own series people!

      • Brad H

I would actually prefer a feature film. I was really hoping that they would do that as opposed to the re-boot. (That being said… I can’t really complain about the new cast)

Amen to this. i miss SMALLVILLE terribly as it was my favourite t v series. I would love to see a follow up t v series entitled METROPOLIS THE NEW DVENTURES OF SUPERMAN AND SUPERGIRL (OR OF LOIS AND CLARK) with Tom Welling and ERICA DURANCE Laura Vandervoort at least as series regulars But I doubt if it will happen for a number of reasons. i doubt if Tom Welling would want to do it as he must be tired of playing Superman. Also, the new SUPERMAN movie MAN OF STEEL may be a reason why it will not happen as it also is a origins story and a reworing of SMALLVILLE to a certain extent.Warner Brothers may not want two Superman properties playing at once understandably ESPECIALLY WITH THE COPYRIGHT ISSUES WITH THE SUPERMAN CREATORS FAMILIES.. Erica Durance was the lead in a Canadian t v network CTV series pilot SAVING HOPE. NO news HAS BEEN released ON WHETHER IT WILL BE PICKED UP.

So will it be terrible of me to hope that MoS would be a bust just so to have a Smallville spin-off on tv??

I mean, I know MoS will make a killing in the box office but if it does not reach the expected numbers like SR 2006 then it’ll be another 7 years before the next SM movie.

GET THIS CRAP OFF TV NOWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • JBL

Derek Jeter must have seen this show and decided that he could not marry someone on such an embarassing show. Thus, he dumped Minka Kelly. She is the only redeeming factor on this show.

      • Mayhem

JBL: What do Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly have to do with this? She is NOT even on the show that you’re trashing!!

      • Tucker

@Mayhem: Umm, Minka Kelly is one of the stars of the late ‘Charlie’s Angels’ (’11).

    • Ann

They need to cancel this show.

It felt like I was watching 2 different shows tonight. The scenes with Samantha and Bosley were great, the scenes with the angels… not so much. Tonight’s episode highlighted the problems with the show(casting, writing etc). When your guest star(Erica Durance) commands every scene she’s in and than you cut back to your stars(The Angels) and you just don’t care about their story, you have a big problem.
Erica Durance was great, I’m really hoping she gets her own show soon, or guest stars on better shows. I would love to see her guest star on The Good Wife and Revenge. I just really want Erica back on my TV every week.

    • Elle

I don’t think I realized how much I missed seeing Erica Durance on my TV until I watched this episode. I truly missed her. I miss Tom Welling too. I wish he would come out of hiding and start a new project.

  • Soldier

Original Charlie’s Angels (including Cheryl Ladd) Forever!

  • Eliza

So excited to see Erica on my screen again tonight. Miss her and Tom so much. And she was definetly
the best thing about this story

  • JR

I was surprised they pulled Playboy Club first. I gave it a chance, but the acting is terrible and the story line is incredibly lame!

    • Paloma

I was just thinking that. I liked the Playboy Club and wish it hadn’t been cancelled. Charlie’s Angels is just crap. Bad writing, worse acting and not in the least bit interesting.

  • j

awful show…awful Fall so far..besides a couple shows.

  • Lily

Those girls are way too young to be believable. Cancel the show already!

  • Beth

    Ken Tucker, you studly beast.
Erica Durance deserves all the shows. Certainly all the other shows.

  • James Griffin

Rachael Taylor is incredibly gorgeous. She’s really beautiful and a really sweet girl. Australian perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.

    • Dan

Yeah but when she opens her mouth….she is annoying!

    • butter

This show should already be cancelled so Rachael Taylor can go back to being Alex’s girlfriend in Grey’s. He’s a wreck!

  • Jesse

ABC or another big network needs to sign Erica Durance to a talent holding deal. She needs her own series ASAP

  • dee123

Rachael Taylor you’re so much better than this crap.

    • Dan

Not really! I think she’s a major reason that the show doesn’t work. Mink Kelly too.

  • Alex Michaels

I wish I could have stayed around long enough to see Erica but I couldn’t stomach this show. The Angels are just not believable. I don’t know who cast this piece of trash but the premise is not bad. In the hands of a skilled writer, producer and with different cast this could be a great show. You need someone like Joss Whedon who mixed humor and action with great respect for women in Buffy. Yet these girls and yes I mean girls and not women are not worth watching.

  • Maddie

Erica Durance makes everything 800% better!

  • Fates3

I totally agree with you! this show is crap, but Erica Durance made it worth sitting through tonight. Love her! And she totally needs a show worthy of her, or at least a lot of guest appearances so her fans can enjoy her on our TV screens again!

Someone hire this gorgeous, fabulous actress, STAT!!

  • AMB

Houston I think we (finally) have lift off !!! Tonight’s episode rocked. Things are really heating up on Charlie’s Angels. Love that they are now starting to mix episodic television with a serial format . The characters back stories are really starting to come to light. The WTF moment at the end was awesome, totally unexpected, and has opened up new and interesting storyline plots !!! Keep it up ABC. Erica Durance was a awesome guest star, next weeks is John (Christian Shephard.) Terry.

    • butter

wow… do you work at ABC, particularly as a staff in the Charlie’s Angels production? Your comment seems to be the only positive one in this thread.

    • Leann

      Hello, person on ABC payroll.

    • Paloma

Did you watch the same episode I saw?
