Watched the finale again and it was so beautiful. My only issue was that when it was aired on Directv there was a voiceover at the beginning by Coach Taylor that was so poignant and beautiful that I had to rewind it 3 or 4 times. Why didn’t they show that?
They also had that part at the end where the cast was all saying how much they enjoyed working on this show and how great it was. NBC dropped the ball again when it comes to this show haha.
Where can I find this voiceover? I’d love to hear it.
Does anyone know if it’s on the DVD copy? If so, I’ll buy it in a heartbeat.
This is the transcription of the voiceover:
“Give all of us gathered here tonight the strength to remember that life is very fragile. We are all vulnerable and we will all, at some point in our lives, fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts…that what we have is special. It can be taken from us and that when it is taken from us we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times; it is this pain that allows us to look inside ourselves.”
That’s really beautiful. Thanks, Julz!
I came into this show very late. I actually starting watching because of Ken’s reviews and the insightful comments of the viewers here. Thank you for introducing me to a fantastic show that I otherwise passed on (not a football fan and assumed the story was all about football). I enjoyed this last season and will start Netflixing the previous seasons to see what I missed.
This is one of the few TV shows with such a heartfelt, emotional, and satisfying ending. I felt I was saying goodbye to good friends who were moving away. I would miss them terribly and at the same time I am glad to see them moving on better things.
I came to the show late, only last season, because I didn’t think a show about high school football in Texas would hold any interest for me. Ken, you’re right, of course, that it was about football AND family, and when I did start watching it didn’t take me long to realize that it’s intelligent, nuanced, and depicts the lives of the characters in all their complexity and with great humanity. I loved it and am sorry to see it go, but I think it went out perfectly, and I found myself welling up with tears a few times, too.
My one and only complaint about this season was not enough Smash Williams. Landry, Jason Street, Saracen and Tim, all the original Panthers got a little story line and Smash should have also. Surely Smash would have visited his Mom and sister at Christmas.
The actor that played smash quit acting to join the seminary. That’s why there was only a mention of him in a football game.
Bit parts in Salt just weren’t cutting it?
he just didn’t want to act anymore, wanted to do this instead.
Love this show! Ken, thanks for the great review. I actually never watched a single episode on television, but instead used Netflix instant and DVDs. Hopefully others will continue to discover it in this same manner. I was surprised and incredibly comforted by the Tim and Tyra storyline – it was things like this that I didn’t realize I wanted to see happen, but the writers knew! Thank you to the writers, actors, and everyone else involved with FNL for five seasons of this incredible showl
I’ve been a HUGE FNL fan since the very beginning. Always sad when Emmy noms come out and they get no love. Finally got some, now just hand over the statues to Kyle and Connie. BEST SHOW EVER!!!
Yes, it’s always a “wonderful” exchange when TV characters make political comments that match your point of view, even if they are out of place (this series takes place is Texas). Would have been more realistic for them to comment on the failed presidency of that weak nitwit Obama.
Oh, please! Is it your opinion that every single citizen of Texas hates PRESIDENT Obama and so Tyra would be sure to follow suit? Ridiculous. Besides, Tyra has shown herself to be a smart young woman who hangs in there regardless of the obstacles in her way. No way Quitter Palin would be her role model
As Curly has already posted there is zero chance that Tyra would ever wanted to be mentioned with Palin.
No kidding! There are plenty of Republicans that don’t want anything to do with Sarah Palin.
Miffy, Harris County ( largest in Texas)carried Obama in the election. Many Texans were more than ready to let someone else try to clean up the mess left by the republicans.
A profound show. My eyes are still swollen. So satisfying, and heartbreaking at the same time.
It breaks my heart to see this show come to an end – even though the final was very fulfilling. I will miss watching it every Saturday morning On Demand…with my coffee, and usually a tissue or two. Eric Taylor is my favorite tv character of any show I’ve ever watched. Losing this show is like saying goodbye to an old friend…
I took this finale hard. Never cried so hard at a tv program in my life! Very well done in terms as closure for the characters and well shot. I loved how the finale pass in the state championship was handled. I will miss this show and these characters soo much. I have all seasons on dvd and I have already put them all to good use….throw them in all the time. Thanks for 5 great years FNL. Best tv experience I have EVER had!!
I stayed home every Friday night to watch that show. I agree that the way Tami and Eric handled marriage has never before been seen on a television series. I think that was the benchmark of the show. Writing was incredible, acting also. Always wonder why the best shows get axed. All Hail FNL.
One of my all-time favorite shows! I am going to miss it so much. They ended it so perfectly. I watched it with DTV, but I had to watch it again. Texas forever ♥
I watched this season twice. Both times the finale had me choked up. One of the best series/finales I have ever seen. I don’t care what anyone says, this is one of the best shows ever made. I will never forget the journey I took with the characters from Dillon, TX.
