I sure did enjoy watching Gunsmoke as I grew up. James Arness did an oustanding job playing Matt Dillon.
I used to watch Gunsmoke every week with my Mother when she was alive. It was her favorite Western and later mine. I can first remember laying in my crib hearing the theme come on and the two shots of gunfire. I have watched the movies and reruns of this show over and over again never tiring of seeing them. James Arness (Matt Dillon) was and is my favorite western hero and it saddened me when the series ended as it does now to see the great actor leave the stage of life. I am honored to have been a part of his life as a fan, though we never met.

James Arness was indeed the definitive western lawman. Many of the modern westerns unwittingly pay homage to Arness’ wise, steely portrayal. the show was artful quality thru and thru — from the very title to the theme music to the carefully displayed props shown during the closing credits.

Gunsmoke was an ideal family show, which never allowed any vulgar words , or trashy behavior . I’m 69 years old , but the CLASS-ACT behavior of Jim Arness still speaks VOLUMES !!!
