Excellent recap, loved the finale. One question – was the opera house/theater the same one they were at last season when they crossed over to the other universe? Probably not, but it looked similar, does anyone have a definitive answer?
I too thought it looked like the opera house from “Over There”. The End-of-Dayers group were supposed to be setting off their “light bombs” in soft spots so they could rip holes in the fabric of the universe. The opera house was selected as a crossing over point last season because it was a soft spot so it seems to me that this is indeed the same place.
I thought the exact same thing, even the footage of the worm hole that opened in the Thames River, was the same that they showed on the news in the other universe, when alternate broyles was in a bar.
I actually yelled at my TV “WHAT! Peter has to come back, right?! RIGHT????”
Loved the episode. The moments between Olivia and Peter were great. Even though I knew it would not be the true end of Olivia I teared up at the funeral. And the moments between Walter and Peter were so great. I loved Peter’s visit to the prison (so much different than the visit in the pilot…) and the “You’re my dad” scene. If only Anna, John, and Joshua could win Emmys.
The reason Walternate was able to start his machine is because he had baby Henry’s dna. I love tiem traveling stories – there is always a paradox! If you believe Einstein that time is a circle with all events happening simultaneously, the only thing remaining constant is the location – then Peter is out there trying to fix what happened so both universes can survive. But I like the idea of him becoming an observer – except without a bald head! A great season ending finale. I wish I was as creative as the writers!
I don’t understand how the actions or words by Peter at the end caused him to no longer exist. Can you all please explain that to me? I’d prefer as many explanations as possible.
Awful, stupid, lame, ridiculous. Panders to lowest common denominator. Show is a jumble of unrealized ideas. What an incoherent mess.
Sorry you’re too stupid to follow along. :patshead:
I’m sad for you.
oh my god i LOVED this episode! those last scenes were amazing. Best show on TV, i hope it doesn’t get canceled for a loooong time!
Ken, I really only look forward to reading your reviews/recaps of Fringe. So last night after what I thought to be an amazing finale, I read a certain review that I thought completely missed the mark. I loved the finale because of the characters. Fringe has evolved into such a character driven show, and that is why the whole future Fringe worked for me. (Honestly, I actually can see myself enjoying a Fringe set in the future.) There was so many moments that I loved, especially the Walter/Peter scene. Also, I completely agree…this was Joshua Jackson’s episode to shine, and he did deliver. Such a dynamite cast! Looking forward to Season 4.
The characters make the show. And the acting. Jackson has blown me away, especially this season. When he stood there at Olivia’s funeral……I hadn’t cried up till that point because it happened in the “future”, but I totally lost it then.
Some random observations:
*It was hard to get too emotionally invested in Olivia’s death given it wasn’t “real”
*We now know Future-Astrid is really Cam from Bones.
*I wonder what Broyles’ campaign slogan was.
* Seriously, is Detroit really a loss? Notice San Francisco was gone in alt-universe. Now that’s a loss.
*Where have Nina and Brandon been?
*Future facelifts must be cheap and easy.
*It’s clear two universes are a figment of an autistic’s boy imagination. You remember the snow globe demonstration, right?
don’t dis Detroit! I think what was meant is that Broyles lost an eye in Detroit. Don’t knock Detroit if you haven’t been here!
I moved to Detroit 4 years ago and it would absolutely be a loss! The people here are resilient and most are really wonderful. There is a lot to take in–sporting events, tons of concerts, great museums and restaurants. Sure, it has its problems, but so does every city. You should give it a chance.
Non-existant San Francisco is a loss? To who? IMO the only good thing to ever come out of San Francisco was the Salingers. One could only hope that Nancy Pelosi was swallowed up in the city’s demise!!!
Hahaha ! Good one.
Thought the same thing about Astrid’s hair! Kept wondering why Cam was there.
Does the average “Fringe” viewer remember “St. Elsewhere”, or are we showing our age, DCL? Or, has the “St. Elsewhere” finale become famous via the Internet and therefore recognizable to those who never saw it? Nice post, DCL! Cam comment – LOL!
I’m guessing had Fox not renewed the show for the next season that this was planned as the series finale. And it would have been a great one!
did any one else notice that OUR Walter had suffered a stroke?
the left side of his face was drropy, and he NEVER used his left arm…much like Broyles, i guess we just will never know what happened in that future…or will we?
YES! I noticed that also – wondered how Ken missed that?
*droopy
That was a real WTF! ending!
The differences in John Noble’s face in the scene with both Walters near the end was absolutely brilliant. If he doesn’t win an Emmy than the award doesn’t mean squat.
It did happen, its not all in Peter’s mind. The Observers confirmed this at the end. It was an outcome to another attempt to save the universe. The key in getting Peter back is in future Walter’s ability to move Peter’s consciousness “forward”. (Time is not linear)) Peter in body is gone for now, and the memory of Peter has been wiped away as an unexpected result of the “bridge”,-although the Observer hypothisized this might happen. But Peter’s connection will be through Olivia’s niece, hence the picture on the fridge. We know drawings hold alot of meaning in Fringe and back in 2011, she is that girl holding Peter’s hand.
Interesting…the little girl in the picture is the “bridge” between Peter and Olivia..
Do you meant say that Olivias niece is the person who drew the picture? I remember specifically Olivia telling Peter that the neighbor had drawn it.
Also the producers said that Peter is definitely back next season & the girl playing olivias adult niece was a one time thing
I don’t think this show will keep the two universes melded like this. Two of (almost) everyone?? Not likely. Very expensive to shoot (double scenes for ever scene) and time-consuming on a season 4 that almost wasn’t, so I wouldn’t bet on it staying. I think what will happen is the observers will find a reason to have to re-inject Peter into their lives and they’ll put him back. Walter said they couldn’t undo what he did because it was already done(?) and that all centered on two Peters. Also, Peter and Olivia met as children – does Olivia’s entire childhood get wiped away now? Too confusing. Not my favorite episode by far. Also, in a future, I would have thought you’d see Lincoln Lee being a Fringe agent over here and where was Rachel at Olivia’s funeral?
It was implied that Rachel was dead. Walter made a comment to her about being sorry for all she lost.
The universes weren’t totally melded together. Just that room.
Although it should make “crossing over” easier.
I think I saw Rachel at the funeral.
I loved the recap almost as much as the episode. Thanks for not making me wait until Monday.
I have NEVER been a sci-fi fan but this show is just so well written and acted I accept and love everything about it!
Bring on next season and please don’t furlough Joshua!
