I think this is a shame. Mr.Beck said it all with the 8-28 rally…I know I was there.
It amazes me that so many people feel threatened or outraged about a show that only 2 million people watch. Like him or hate him, those just aren’t strong numbers. Do the math. Compare that to how many watch NBC, CBS, etc. And support free speech while you’re at it. I may not agree with all Beck says, but I support his right to say it. If you don’t like it, change the channel.
Beck didn’t get run off the air by Congress. The first amendment protects speech from government intrusion. Fox is not renewing Beck’s contract because they can make more money off someone else. This is about MONEY.
Kestrel, if you read my comment that is what I inferred. It is about numbers. But I still think all the outrage is silly. No one said congress ran him out, but most of the comments here indicate that they feel free speech is great, as long as it’s something they agree with. Thus my comment.
Maybe it depends on where you live. I live in an overwhelmingly conservative state. I used to encounter many people in my area who worshiped everything this man said and saw him as some sort of truth teller instead of what he really is. I saw a number of people motivated to near hysteria by his rhetoric. I couldn’t even have conversations with them because their claims and language was so bizarre. Maybe others haven’t encountered that, but I sure did.
I definitely encountered that too Sanjay. And it freaked me out. I know that Beck is a raging mental case and most of what he says is meant to stir the equally mentally raging deficient people and it did work on some. I work with a lady that would quote the guy and I will tell you, since she first did that, I have thought MUCH less of her. The guy needed to go months and months ago.
Of course we all support free speech. But I also support a company having the right to dissolve their standing relationship with him becaue it’s no longer as beneficial as it once was. As you suggest, if he was #1 in the ratings, he’d still be there.
If you look at most of the comments here, and elsewhere(Yahoo, for example), many only pay lip service to free speech, as long as they agree with it, or if it matches their worldview. Thus my comments. I don’t agree with the guy, but he gets to say what he thinks.
This is a dark day in journalism. Glenn Beck is telling the truth-and he is the only one with the guts to tell what is really going on. Obama and his gang of thugs and communist radical loony left-wing liberals are out to destroy America, yet the average person is too clueless to see what is really going on. Obama and his gang want to usher in an era of government dependence and an end to our freedoms. They want to destroy the America we know and love, and sadly enough Americans bought into the Obama Kool-Aid that we have the unmitigated disaster that is the Obama presidency. Glenn Beck, you will be missed. Only you have the courage to tell the truth.
Barack Palin, your nom de plum and comment are both ridiculous. Beck is not brave, he is unhinged and taking advantage of suckers. America is on the rocks, but it’s because America is becoming increasingly irrational. Beck never made any sense because he was driven crazy by this notion that someone or something was conspiring against America. Crazy people try to make sense of the world by developing irrational conspiracies. Beck did his and there enough crazy people (at two million) who lapped this nonsense up.

Sorry Ken. The problem is that as much as you want to comment on other people’s comments about Beck, I can’t help but see this through your own biased prism. You critique Beck and other conservatives, you can’t help but take a shot at them in a way that you never do for liberals. For example, at the end of your article you say that you’re looking forward to Jon Stewart’s comments, but if Jon Stewart were leaving Comedy Central, you wouldn’t care, or even mention, what Beck, O’Rieally, or, God forbid, Limbaugh would have to say about it.
I respect your politics Ken, I just wish you wouldn’t let them crawl into your reviews as often as you do.
Actually, there was an article about how Bill O’Reilly felt about Keith Olbermann leaving MSNBC… sure, Ken didn’t write it, so maybe that’s where your beef is? I’m sure there’s video out there of what Jon Stewart thought about Keith’s departure as well, because those two haven’t always gotten along either.
It amazes me the hate from the left just b’c someone has a different opinion, view, or values than they do. Why does that make one uneducated?
Probably for the same reason that the right might feel like anyone using government assistance (Medicaid, unemployment assistance), is a freeloader who doesn’t have a job… generalization. However, don’t pretend that there isn’t any hate coming from the right as well.

Shouldn’t you be more upset with the advertisers who pulled their commericals? This was about money, plan and simple. Beck alientated his advertisers and wasn’t bring in as much money as he should have, considering his viewership. News Corp is a business and it has to make money. Beck’s show wasn’t making any money, so Fox opted to put someone else in. It’s business.

He is a nut and I can’t believe it’s taken this long for a major network to take away his platform. He won’t go away, for sure, because there are plenty of nuts rabid for conspiracty theories. His type of rhetoric is detrimental to our culture and political process. Some may think that’s good. I do not. He muddes the waters with confusion and language that is not productive toward actual progress by EITHER party or ANY party for that matter. Good riddance and I hope his audience continues to shrink whereever he ends up.
