TV reactions to Glenn Beck's Fox departure begin... with Glenn Beck

Glenn Beck began his Wednesday-afternoon Fox News show by confirming, “I am going to leave this program later this year, but I am not leaving Fox.”

He added, “There are more important stories than, ‘What’s the big fat chunky guy on TV gonna do in his future?’” But then he asked us to continue to watch because he’d have more to say at the end of his show… about “chunky” Glenn Beck.

Beck proceeded to start his usual run of vast conspiracy theories, with the warning that “we will have to name the coming summer as ‘The Summer of Rage.’” He displayed a list of people who “want revolution.” The list included Bill Clinton, Michael Moore, Noam Chomsky, the Muslim Brotherhood, George Soros, Van Jones, Bill Ayers, Ryan Seacrest — oh, sorry, I made that last one up. I think.

At the end of the show, Beck compared himself to Paul Revere: “Paul Revere didn’t get on the horse and say I’m going to do this for the rest of my life!” Beck asserted that “I turned down Fox originally; I didn’t want to do it. I hated doing it at the other place.” (This was a punch at Headline News.) But he did his Fox show to “prove that something wicked this way is coming.” He said, “I’m developing other content for Fox, specials and other things.”

UPDATE: On MSNBCs The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, O’Donnell characterized that as “the standard kiss-off in show business,” meaning Fox was doing the kissing and will be glad to see the back of Beck. Why? Well, O’Donnell observed that Beck “believes the end of the world is coming,” and therefore “advertisers for cars” and various luxury items don’t want to sponsor Beck, because “if you think it’s the end of the world, nothing can cheer you up.”

Keep coming back here; I’ll be quoting and commenting on other TV shows tonight that discuss Beck’s departure. I’m, ah, rather looking forward to The Daily Show With Jon Stewart tonight, aren’t you?

Yawn. Oh sorry, does anyone care about this?

    • Cy

Agreed. I do not consider this entertainment-related and yet I’m finding it on a site called “Entertainment Weekly.”

      • K

You don’t consider a TV talk show entertainment-related? That’s weird.

      • miss k

Well, technically, Glenn Beck is pure television entertainment and nothing more. It makes sense it’s on this website. Also, Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert will most likely eat this up in the most hilarious way possible (so looking forward to that) and EW will probably put a clip up or something. So yes, while no one likes Glenn Beck, of course EW will still report it.

      • Josephinem

Do you consider his show news ? Do you actually believe that Fox is the only place for truth?

      • Cy

I suppose my point was that while it may be “entertaining” to some, it purports itself to be news related. I don’t see articles on here about other similarly themed TV talk shows such as Rachel Maddow, Anderson Cooper or Chris Matthews.

  • r singh

Glenn Beck’s show is ‘all about the truth’…..but is Fox feeling the pinch from someone? Why then is his show ending? I think he has the guts to tell the truth so that the sleeping American might wake up to the reality of what’s really happening.

    • Matthew

Really r singh? I really cant believe that there are people that see Beck as anything but this crazy cartoon character. I think its the same group of people that really would vote for Trump if he ran.

    • Amanda Kiwinerd

      Good grief you are retarded.

    • Hiro Kitty

      Tin foil hat alert!!!

    • DavidG

Are you for real r singh? Are you THAT obtuse, that clueless, that you cannot see what Glen Beck is? Or did your mother drop you on your head when you were a baby?

    • Sean Bandy

I find it truly demoralizing that people are more willing to tune into ~and take their cues from~ a comedy network’s “news” parodies than do their own research on the events which shape our world. Show me a news network which is neither GOP-leaning nor Liberal-leaning and I will show you Al Jazeera. Everyone needs to stop spitting venom at each other and educate themselves on issues. Glenn Beck, regardless of which side you took on his show, over the past two years made people take that side more firmly. Grant him that much but do not label his viewers as “uneducated (i.e. high school dropouts) and gullible.” Grow up.

      • marie

Actually studies show that if the same news story is run on Fox News and The Daily Show, more people learn and retain the information from the Daily Show. Just cause it’s funny, doesn’t mean it isn’t the truth.

@Sean Bandy: I don’t have a problem with what Glenn Beck says on his show. It’s called the First Amendment. But I do have a problem when he calls is “the truth.” Give me a break. There’s nothing truthful about his show. And the fact that he’s not telling us the real “truth” as to why his show got canceled is further proof. And then this clown wants President Obama to be more transparent. Kettle meet Kettle.

      • Pam

It’s pretty clear to me that you’ve never watched Glenn Beck or you would know that he always says “Don’t take my word for it, but check it out for yourself.” America better wake up before it’s too late!!

  • LOL

Fox will just replace this clown with another clown.

  • Jim Calhoun

Good Bye and Good riddence to the top Bsser in the world.
Need to brush up on factual history for your next BS.

  • sharon

my mother, who is in her 80′s, and i had more fights over this jerk. she actually believed a lot of what he said. so i started watching and made a list of his nutball comments. after she read them she said i will never admit you are right so let’s just drop this jerk and call it even. she hasn’t watched since.

    • K

LOL. That’s awesome. My mother and I had a fight that began when I questioned Sarah Palin’s abilities and then called Beck a moron. Just because he doesn’t have a college degree doesn’t mean he’s not smart! That’s so elitist! He cries because he has a sad past, not because he’s trying to emotionally manipulate his viewers! You don’t even know him (or Sarah Palin) – how can you say you hate them? He does a lot of research! I worry about you! You sound like you’re watching too much Chris Matthews! [I watch ZERO news shows, in fact.] You’re letting the media bias influence you!
Gee thanks, Mom. I’m glad that all those times you told me how smart I was, you were apparently lying because you have no faith in my adult intelligence and ability to think critically about information with which I am presented. I wish I’d had the time to watch Beck and compile a list like you did…I’ll have to try to do it next time the issue comes up.

  • JPX

“Fox is one of the only places you will find truth.” Does he realize how ridiculous he sounds? FOX is nothing more than a GOP propaganda machine. Beck specifically appeals only to the uneducated (i.e. high school dropouts) and the gullible. He was a former radio D.J. and an alcoholic. Good riddance, nut-job.

I find it demoralizing that you posted this same message twice in two minutes. I don’t take my news from the Daily Show or Colbert; I read the newspaper and books and periodicals and watch the nightly news (my personal fave is Brian Williams) nightly. However, I do love the programs Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert make. Explain to me how they don’t help you pick a side in the politics of our day. They are masters of parody and point out the growing insanity that permeates our culture. They are doing a lot more to stop us from spitting venom at each other then Glenn Beck ever has. I don’t label his viewers uneducated; I don’t think they are all high school dropouts. I do think in general they are miseducated because they listen to the ranting on his show and too often actually believe it. I think Glenn Beck has been detrimental to our society. I am glad his program is over.

      • Kestrel10

While Fox loves to bash stewart and Colbert, the reality is that viewers of those two shows are both better educated and informed than Fox news viewers. They don’t rely on these shows for their, they find the shows funny because they actually consume a great deal of news from multiple sources. If you didn’t pay attention to the news these shows wouldn’t make any sense. Only a well informed person will get the joke. That’s how humor works.

    • Mary

You are the nut job and when it turns out much of what he says is true and our country is destroyed maybe than you will get it!

  • Dana

Those that hate Beck are too lazy to research what he says.Just drink your koolaide and go back to sleep folks. Obama will take care of you while the rest of us pay the bill.

    • Dana

Hey JPX, you forgot to bash Beck for his religion. You wouldn’t be mascerading as forgiving christian would you…? Didn’t think so.

      • MultiPass

He’s a Mormon. And you’re an idiot if you believed anything he said. He laughed all the way to the bank. Can’t fault him for being a drunk though. Must be tough knowing you signed a deal with Satan. I’d drink to forget that and all the lies I told in his name

    • jodipo

oh yeah, thats totally reasonable. After all, the right wing is well known for thinking for themselves and doing reasearch…. oh wait. HA! Funny how you seem to think you idiots are exactly opposite of what you actully are. You Beck fans are sheep. Just as stupid too

    • Kestrel10

      Tinfoil alert.

  • ruth

    say it isn’t soo..I love glenn beck’s show…he speaks the truth…

    • ARIANA

Good Riddance! Maybe the government can get something accomplished with one less idiot spewing garbage across the television.

  • BAST

Glenn Beck outdid himself, he performed some amazing feats.
He ripped the curtain back on B.S.!
    Best Wishes for Beck.

  • Pepe

I used to watch the show at its beginnings but all of a sudden it degenerated in ”conspiracy theories” something that I never believed. Also he converted himself in a ”clown” and I am no longer 5 years old to watch more clowns. It was time for Mr. Beck to go.

  • hold on

Comments calling Glenn names, show the intolerance and stupidity in our country. The facts, as presented , are frightening and should at least be considered the truth. What if it is? Thanks Glen

    • Lee

Glenn Beck said that President Obama hates white people. You don’t think that’s a name caller? This is one of the main reasons why over 400 of his sponsors boycotted him. Good riddance to that hypocrite.

      • Kestrel10

Beck said he hated “white culture.” I am here to say that I too hate white culture. I don’t like Lawernce Welk and never will. All the man did was destroy Americas song book. That’s what he meant by white culture, right? Welk is the whitest person, ever.

      • LD

@Lee, Beck backs his comments with footage, etc. Show me where to find where Beck actually said Obama hates white people? I bet you can’t b’c you take another person’s comments and run with it. People that bash Beck the most, are people who do not watch him. (and I don’t mean tuning in for a few minutes or just one show)

  • Jolie

    I hate this man.

  • teenie weenie

Lefties are so predictable – don’t like what someone says? Instead of logical argument, call the opponent names, attack their credentials, but never offer valid debate. It’s gotten old, you bore me – - yawn – -.

    • jodipo

aaaaaand once AGAIn a right wing retard says the exact OPPOSITE of truth. Good job, go back to watch Beck, You’re not intelligent enough to deal with reality yet

    • Kestrel10

Itty bitty teenie weeny, Glenn Beck is such a meany.

  • Izzy

Beck and Rush are first and foremost entertainers concerned with ratings. You take their commentary on politics the way you take the legal commentary on Law and Order – as entertainment.

  • commonsense

I’ll be glad to offer a plethora of valid reasons that Glen Beck was not a positive role model: He targeted those who were already fearful of their economic situation and sold them the BS that the end is near. There were so many apparent fallacies in his arguments that not one person with any knowledge of how the main principles of philosophy work (logic and reason) would believe a word that came out of his mouth. He bred on fear of the unknown and has caused many, many people to receive death threats and lose their jobs because of his personal dedication to ruining their lives and the call to actions he required his viewers to make. He made up ridiculous acronyms with neither legitimacy nor caution. It was apparent he preyed on the weak-minded.

    • Lee

EXACTLY. HE WAS A CULT LEADER.
