Anderson Cooper tells David Letterman about his 'beating' in Egypt and his resemblance to a newt

Anderson Cooper appeared on the Late Show on Wednesday night, telling David Letterman about his beating at the hands of what he termed “pro-Mubarak thugs.” Cooper described the roughing up he and his CNN crew were subjected to, saying that the present government has “given a green light for mobs to attack anyone who looks foreign.”

Cooper was self-deprecating in describing the attacks, telling Letterman that in the midst of the “pummeling,” he groped for what little Arabic he knew and thought he was saying “Peace! Peace!” but instead figured out later he was actually saying “God willing,” as though it were divine will that he be beaten.

Letterman asked if Cooper thought he’d been singled out because he was recognizable. “Don’t take this the wrong way,” said Letterman, “but you, I think, just standing on a corner, call attention to yourself,” referring to Cooper’s distinctive white-haired look.

“Yes, I’m like a newt who’s emerged from underneath a rock, you know?” responded Cooper jokingly. “Yeah, it’s like, ‘Look for the pale, skinny, gray-haired man.’ [I'm] not too hard to identify.”

    GOP fears Letterman.

    • LiberalDoucheBag

Yea…..that is why they stole so many house seats. I think the GOP has a lot more on their hands than to worry about Letterman.

      • jodipo

yeah, like failing to get anything passed with their majority and mopping up Bohners tears

  • Larry

He got what he deserves. These news reporters who rush to areas where violence breaks out are no better than ambulance chasers. They are only there to stroke their already gargantuan egos.

    • Mike

      Larry David, that you?!

    • Stevex

So what the f are they supposed to do, not go there? There’s a large, violent uprising in an important country, in the most unstable region of the world. The anchors should just stay away? Wake up, man!

    • Tarc

Thanks for the input of the ignorant red state isolationists… the nation needs so much more of that. (NOT!)

    • Jeanne

If it wasn’t for dedicated reporters, who risk thier lives, we would not know what is going on in the world. God Bless them, and stay safe.

      • Maria

These so called dedicated reporters should get the facts straight.
All they concentrated on was “The Square”, not what was actually happening in other parts of the city.
Plenty of it was not facts! Only, what they wanted us to think. ( makes for good news here in the west.)
Yes, I do know this for a fact, and it infuriates me.

      • Sukey

HHIS I should have thughot of that!

    • GHB

Larry, you’re a tool. He was there to report the news.

  • Marianna

Don’t take this the wrong way, David, but it was the cameras and the microphone that got Anderson Cooper thumped in Egypt. ALL the news media were getting pummeled, not just the disticntive, white haired ones from CNN.

  • dan ehrl

Larry, he got what he deserves? So…journalists shouldn’t cover the protests in Egypt if they also happen to be famous? Anderson Cooper is not exactly Nancy Grace..

  • Jill

Er, he really needs to work on his Arabic then. Peace = Salaam. God willing = Enshallah.

  • Melly

Seth Meyers was right. You seriously cannot punch the handsome off of AC.

    • The Major

      True that. Nice pull!

  • The Major

@Larry (aka: “IDIOT”) you sound much like Rush, when he said that it was “no big deal and funny, really” when the NY Times reporters were attacked (ABC reporter also threatened with beheading) until an hour later when he found out that there were two FOX “news” reporters in the hospital from their wounds. Then all of the sudden, this is serious stuff and he was “just kidding before.” Yeah, right. The reporters are there to “REPORT” for pete’s sake and they don’t deserve to die for their jobs, any more than the Americans stationed in Iran deserved to be taken hostage so many years ago. Everyone is really lucky more were not injured/maimed/killed.

  • Dee McVey

@Molly, thanks for bringing us back to reality!

  • Lyn

Glad he’s OK, but good grief — if you want to see news guys who really were roughed up, look up the video of Fox News’s Greg Palkot and his camera man, who actually had to be hospitalized after being attacked while doing their jobs. Anderson emerged with not one silvery hair out of place!

    • Jonathon

Yes, let’s enter the victimization olympics! Tell us Lyn, how badly were you beaten while sitting on your couch, stuffing your face with doritos and lard?

      • haha

hahahaha oh snaaaapppp! Is it lunch already? Cause Lyn just got served!

    • Tim

Ahaha haha just so quirky and spunky. I imagine haha with a midriff shirt daisy dukes shorts and a scarf around his neck.

    • Maria

I’m with you on this Lyn.

  • Gloria

Cooper described the roughing up he and his CNN crew were subjected to, saying that the present government has “given a green light for mobs to attack anyone who looks foreign.” So says Anderson Cooper…Kinda sounds a bit like what is happening in parts of the USA. Not a good thing ANYWHERE.
