'Smallville' recap: The return of Luthor

This week’s Smallville was a twisty, topsy-turvy one — an hour that only seemed like a novelty respite from the series’ recent story lines. By the end, however, the episode titled “Luthor” had deepened the season’s themes.

In an alternate-Earth, baby Clark had been found [SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY] in the cornfield by READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' recap: 'Entrada' and exits, lives saved and lost

With its first-time-ever blue- and red-tinged opening credits, we knew from the start that this week’s Fringe, titled “Entrada,” was going to be the universe-melding adventure we’d been awaiting. The question was, how were the two Olivias going to get switched back to their rightful universes? The bigger questions — for the season, for the series, for us — were, Who can people trust, and how can people maintain hope in the face of seemingly inevitable disaster? 'Celebrity Rehab' premiere: 'I smell face-lifts!' and other appalling remarks and behavior

Every season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew fills a viewer with contradictory reactions. On the one hand, we’re saddened when we see the sad wreck that, say, former kid pop star Leif Garrett has become, “not sober since age 14,” as he said last night in the season 4 premiere. We wish him better health. On the other hand, we witness the appalling behavior of Jason Davis (who? the grandson of super-wealthy mogul Marvin Davis) as he whines about READ FULL STORY »

'Terriers' season (series?) finale: What did you think of the ending?

Terriers wrapped up its first season on Wednesday night with a highly satisfying episode and an open-ended conclusion that did not feel like a cheat or a tease. While I’ve made clear my reservations about the series in a previous post, I thought the last three episodes of Terriers were excellent, and am solidly in the please-FX-renew-it camp.

What I appreciated most about the finale was that it READ FULL STORY »

The banned Craig Ferguson 'Doctor Who' cold open: See it here

When The Late Late Show did its recent Doctor Who salute-show, Craig Ferguson was mightily cheesed off that the big production number he’d taped for the start of the hour was cut READ FULL STORY »

'Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2010' review: It was 'this sexy bomb!'

Who knew the The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2010 would be so aesthetically complex? Sure, it was 60 minutes of cameras zooming in on the chests and crotches of slinky models dressed in clothes that would get their designers booted off Project Runway. But the show also tried to do a number of things at once: Give you a sense of what it’s like backstage; give the impression that READ FULL STORY »
