Is anyone watching 'Blue Bloods' besides me?

Filed under: TV and tagged: , , ,

It’s Friday, and there’s a rerun of Blue Bloods tonight, and at the risk of sounding like a no-life, I have to admit: If I’m in front of the TV when it airs, I’ll probably watch the rerun. That’s how much I like what Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, and READ FULL STORY »

'No Easy Decision' review: Abortion was the focus of MTV's '16 and Pregnant' special

No Easy Decision, MTV’s special spun off from 16 and Pregnant, followed Markai Durham as she came to the agonizing conclusion to have an abortion. With a frankness rarely seen anywhere on television, No Easy Decision presented a vivid, unsparing look at something that’s not just an “issue” but a harrowing decision. READ FULL STORY »

Sarah Palin sneers at 'conservationists who write me nasty letters': A 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' review

Sarah Palin visited a logging camp, picked up a chainsaw, and helped cut down a tree during this week’s Sarah Palin’s Alaska. Later, after playing a spirited game of “Eskimo bingo” with some loggers’ families, Palin sneered at “conservationists [who] write me nasty letters because I support [logging], usin’ their pretty little pencils and their pretty little stationery, not realizin,’ where do you think your pencil and your stationery comes from? It came from a tree that was harvested!”

As usual, Palin’s pluckiness was impressive. She READ FULL STORY »

'The Andy Griffith Show 50th Anniversary' review: Today is a perfect time to enter the world of Mayberry

Christmas is just over, and maybe you’re happy or exhausted or overwhelmed or at peace. There is no mood, however, that cannot be lifted or enhanced by watching a few episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. A new DVD, The Best of Mayberry, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the show’s 1960 debut, and collects what is, by fan common consensus, 17 episodes that are the all-time favorites of the series that ran from 1960-1968. It starred Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor, presiding over Mayberry, a town that is at once an idealized small town, and a quietly realistic embodiment of small-town habits and values.

Just last night, for example, I watched “Man in a Hurry,” considered by the authors of The Andy Griffith Show Book (1985) to be the best Griffith Show everĀ  (it was episode number 77, if you’re a scholar of such things). It tells the tale of READ FULL STORY »

'Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol' review: There is joy (and sadness) in Who-ville!

By far the best Christmas special to be seen on TV this year, the Doctor Who Christmas special takes on A Christmas Carol in its own unique way. Airing on BBC America on Saturday night, it gives a sci-fi/fantasy spin to Charles Dickens’ tale, and its great achievement is that it offers a rip-roaring Doctor Who adventure tale while never losing the spirit (and structure) of A Christmas Carol. Oh, and Harry Potter‘s Michael Gambon makes READ FULL STORY »

Ken Tucker's 10 MORE Best TV shows of 2010: My 11-20 List

Here they are: 10 more TV shows that can stand among the best TV of the year. This round-up includes many of the shows I wept, agonized, and rent my garments over including or dropping from my 10 Best list, which can be seen here.

11. Carlos (Sundance Channel) A portrait of the terrorist as a narcissist, a screw-up, and a human lethal weapon, Carlos — a three part made-for-TV movie by director Olivier Assayas and starring Edgar Ramirez as Carlos the Jackal — was as unnerving as any thriller on the small or big screen this year, and unafraid to show both the glamor and the horror of self-styled revolutionary action. 'Parks and Recreation': Your (almost) spoiler-free preview of the new season

The new, third season of Parks and Recreation starts Jan. 20. I’ve watched the first few episodes, and am here to tell you it’s going to be a terrific one. Get ready for Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope to take on Rob Lowe, the Twilight books, and the flu, as well as making a great Scott Bakula/Quantum Leap joke.

Clearly, the new season has accepted the challenge of making READ FULL STORY »

'Perfect Couples' review: Imperfect humor

Filed under: TV and tagged: , , ,

Starring talented actors in a sitcom that’s stylized to the point of airlessness, Perfect Couples made an early premiere on Monday night after the season finale of The Sing-Off. The half-hour is built around three couples. They’re all pals, but most often, we saw each couple in separate sub-plots. Amy tricked Vance into seeing a couples therapist; Dave and Julia were trying to heat up their romantic life; Rex and Leigh spent most of their time taking pride in their relationship skills.

The jokes were frequently written as though they’d been conceived for a stand-up comedian’s act instead of dialogue. Leigh: “Because I’m committed to our relationship, I never go Number Two in our house. I have a gym membership solely for that purpose.” READ FULL STORY »

With Kate Gosselin gone, Sarah Palin takes a shot at Michelle Obama, goes rafting: A 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' review

After last week’s special Invasion of the Kate Monster episode of Sarah Palin’s Alaska, La Palin had to unwind a bit, as who would not after Hurricane Gosselin had swept through Wasilla?

So she loaded most of the family into a big RV and went rafting, camping, dog-sledding, even panning for gold, as well as enjoying all the treats of the great outdoors.

“Where’s the s’mores ingredients?” Sarah said to her children, adding, “This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert.” I would assume this was a shot against the First Lady’s campaign against childhood obesity, wouldn’t you?

The hour was beautifully filmed, as usual, and it looked like great fun to shoot the “class-three rapids” (I don’t know from rafting; seemed challenging to me), and only a little tedious to go panning for gold. Palin’s father, Chuck, told the camera, “On a good day we can find an ounce of gold, and gold is $1,200 an ounce, so you can make a living at it.” Wow — why hasn’t everyone headed up to Alaska for this, especially after seeing all those invest-in-gold commercials they air on Fox News?

Oh, yes — the cameras. Herein lies the perplexing quality of Sarah Palin’s Alaska. In the midst of this idyllic getaway, framed against majestic mountains and glaciers, Palin could not resist saying how glad she was to “get away from the idiots and the bloggers who do not like our family.” She also said, READ FULL STORY »
