This week’s episode of Terriers was the new series’ best hour to date. It took the oldest trick in the TV handbook — a flashback episode that showed us how our heroes arrived at the point in their lives we’re now following — and made it triumphant storytelling.
We saw the way Donal Logue’s Hank met his partner-in-private-investigation, Britt (Michael Raymond-James), three years ago. We might have guessed: Britt was a suspect, Hank was still an active cop and an active drunk, and he conducted the interrogation.
Hank may have been lacing his coffee from a flask filled with the hard stuff, much to the frustration of his then partner Mark, but he was still shrewd enough to figure out that Britt wasn’t the serial rapist the cops were seeking. It was the guy Hank really thought had committed the crimes, cocky Billy Whitman, who was the focus of Hank’s most intense questioning, and the character that sparked the flashback: Whitman, who’d known Hank’s ex-wife in college, had resurfaced and, in the present-day part of the show, prompted Hank to beg Mark to reopen the old, cold case.
This episode was written by Tim Minear (a Joss Whedon stalwart, writing and/or directing episodes of Angel, Firefly, and Dollhouse) and directed by Tucker Gates, who’s done fine work on everything from The X-Files to Alias to Lost. All that skill was in evidence in this Terriers titled “Sins of the Past.”
If you’re wondering why this is my first post on Terriers — I know quite a few readers have been asking when I’d start writing about it — it’s because I haven’t been so impressed by the show that I wanted to share enthusiasm, nor so disappointed that I wanted to dole out any negative judgment. Terriers is a shaggy-dog-story show — it moves along at a pace that is intentionally aimless whenever it’s not surprisingly predictable. I say “surprisingly” simply because I’ve expected more from show creator Ted Griffin, who’s written Ocean’s Eleven, among other feature films, and producer Shawn Ryan (The Shield — ’nuff said).
I like Hank and Britt a lot when they’re together, bantering with each other and teaming up to con a suspect or solve a case. But whenever they’re apart, the clichés start. Hank’s hangdog love for his ex-wife Gretchen is unrequited romance at its most realistic — that is, obsessive to Hank and repetitious to people watching him obsess. And I was fervently hoping that once Britt learned that his girlfriend, Katie, had had a one-night stand with another guy, he wouldn’t do what thousands of hard-boiled heroes in TV shows, movies, and books have done before, which is to up and leave, and then wallow in self-pity. Which is what Britt did.
I know there’s an excellent show at the heart of Terriers. I just wish it expressed its heart via its head more often, with sharper dialogue for any characters who aren’t named Hank or Britt, and with the sort of plot turns we were treated to in this week’s very fine episode.
There are two more episodes in Terriers‘ first season; I hope FX renews it, so the show can demonstrate where it’s going and proves with more consistency what it can do.
So let’s hear it, Terriers fans. What do you think?

While I applaud you giving Terriers some much needed attention, I think it’s a better show than you’re giving it credit for. Even so, thanks for reviewing it. More people should watch.
Damn right!
Fully agree!
And can we get some love for Karina Logue’s Steph? Here’s hoping she becomes a series regular next season.
Exactly! Love this show; just glad it’s getting SOME attention here….
I agree. I think it is a great show. I originally tuned in because the man who plays Britt, played Renee’ in True Blood. But I was soon taken in by the chemistry of Britt and Hank. The stories may be nothing new, but the way the actors play the characters, it doesn’t seemed forced, like so many other shows, and I love the bantering back and forth. I also found Hanks sister hilarious. I think this show could go a long way, and I’d like to see them come back next season. Also, I was glad to see C Note from Prison Break on the screen again.
That’s the same reason I started watching, the evil Renee connection. I do think this show is better than the review; the only thing I don’t like is the Katie storyline. Her self-destruction is out of left field and I just don’t like the actress playing her. She seems to always seems to play these whiny, crying, manipulative type of characters.
Ditto!!
Ditto! I started watching as a Donal Logue fan (we’re rare, but dedicated) and now my gent & I are completely hooked on its combination of humor, intelligence, depth of characterizations, and twisty story-lines. Fingers crossed it gets picked up for next season.
I loved Donal in Life and Raymond- James in Tru Blood. I absolutely love this show, but I agree, I like it best when those two are together.
I agree. I think this show is underrated; I like it quite a bit. I fear it will be cancelled, which is unfortunate.
I agree. I was glad to see the review, but surprised to read so many negative things in it. It is infinitely better than a lot of shows. What about the episode with Olivia Williams? I absolutely loved that one.
Terriers is better than every show currently reviewed on this site. No question about that.
I think this is one of the best shows on TV. It’s season-long surprising twists are myriad. So the love-sick guys act typically. Does that really make it ordinary> Love this show and hope FX continues to allow it to flourish.
Agree…how about not focusing on the love aspect on the show…what about the fact you have two seemingly loser types getting the better off of the bullying power brokers and beating them at their own game. These days …people need shows like that. The story of the underdog…another cliche but done so well on this show.
It deserves better than this review, but any press is good press, I suppose!
First,
Have to agree that Hank and Britt together are what make the show click. They have toyed with them apart for a few eps in the middle of the run and those are weaker than the rest. I really liked Katie and Britt as a couple and the cheating story adds nothing to the show. This was a strong ep for Mark as well and I like how they are developing his relationship with Hank. The detective being the rapist was bit too easy. Overall love Terriers and look forward to it as much as SOA.
You are aware the repeat right after isn’t even over yet and you’re blogging plot twists. What a d-bag.
You are aware that Ken Tucker actually warned Spoilers Ahead and the article is titled recap thereby implying that major plot points will be discussed. I may be a dbag but you are a major ahole. If you don’t want to know what happens wait until after you watch to read a recap. It wasn’t a preview you ignorant POS.
F**k you and your syphillitic girlfriend, you a$$clown.
this show is way better than this article suggests. The first 5 episodes were a great unpredictible drama – just when you think its going a certain way, it zigs another, and then another.
episode 4 or 5 when the rich bad guy bites the dust, and how they make it look like he drove off of a cliff.
or how they framed Britts ex partner in crime to get him out of the picture?
Yes in the last few episodes, there has been some cliche – but really about Britt and his girlfriend? what did you expect him to do?
we would have lost respect for him, if he didnt get angry and hurt. I sure hope they bring back hanks sister (Logue’s real life sister) as she was alot of fun.
my biggest fear is this show getting canceled it is so good!
Glad to finally see some positive press at EW for Terriers even if the show is much better than given credit for here. Hopefully it is not too late for what is easily one of the best shows on TV.
Aside from ratings obviously, probably the best hope for the show to continue is by letting FX know how you feel: user@fxnetworks.com
Agreed with Leithen, it’s a much better show than given credit, the writing is excellent and the interplay with everyone, though somwhat predictible, is believable. A cliche is cliche’d because that’s what real people do. I love this show and hope that it gets renewed because it’s a breath of fresh air compared to the stale crap that’s offered up on the networks (CSI’s, L&O’s, any hospital drama, etc.). Not to mention that ridiculously catchy hook line in the Title song!
I love everything about this show, the theme song, actors, and stories(even “weak” episodes are far better than most crap on tv). I care about what happens to these people every week, and it better get a second season!!!
The going comment at our house regarding all the other crap on TV is “They can’t all be Terriers.”
Donal Logue can act the hell out of his scenes. I always thought of him being in comedies, but this show lets him showcase his talents in ways we have not seen. Bravo!!
could not agree more. DL is sooo underrated, it should be a crime.
I am a huge DL fan…remember him in Grounded for Life?! He is such a diverse actor ans MRJ is awesome…def the BEST show on television right now!
I totally agree. The moment that really hooked me on this show was in the first ep at the end when Hank and Britt confront Lindus in his office and Britt’s doing all the talking. Logue was so frickin’ good, I didn’t even realize till he finally opened his mouth that he hadn’t even been saying anything! Just the look on his face as he’s reacting to the conversation says volumes.
I love Donal Logue. I love Donal Logue. Can’t say it enough. He’s smart, quick, a great subtle actor, give that man an Emmy!
Terriers is now officially one of the best shows on television, right up there with “The Walking Dead,” “Mad Men,” and “Dexter.” I have loved the last three episodes–and any show that makes the new husband of the ex-wife a possible child molester is not “predictable,” not by a long shot–but “Sins of the Past” is by far the best. Plotting this clever, with an ending that blindsides you as completely, doesn’t happen every day or even every year. Please please please renew this great show!
Thanks for finally giving a recap on EW. One of my favorite shows already; kind of a mix of buddy movie and film noir with a little soap opera and humor mixed in.
FX, Please renew it. It is one of the best shows on TV!
Given the current offerings by broadcast networks FX has picked a winner. Terriers is Smart, funny and with alot of heart – executed with a cast that delivers the goods.
I guess the best Drama on television wasn’t good enough for you to review. Must not have gotten any swag or cash to care about this great show huh Ken. This article is a little lame and a little too late.
Well, I’ve been one of those asking for some copy on this great show, so I’m thankful for the post. I’ll admit I’m surprised by the lukewarm reaction to the bulk of the season–I’ve found every episode gripping, funny, just plain terrific. But I suppose your job isn’t to share my exact tastes.
Still, better than nothing! And I hope maybe this will get a few more folks tuning in. Here’s hoping FX comes through and gives ‘em another season.
this show is terrific. Thanks for finally showing it a little love
I absolutely love this show. Very original, well acted. What can we do to save it from cancellation? What a shame, no one is watching it.
Thank you! Finally- Terriers is the best new show on TV and I hope it gets picked up for next season. If it doesn’t it will be because of Ocean Beach- OB is a little hidden gem in San Diego, never meant to be shared with the rest of the world. The Ex-List was a great show but canceled, why? Because it was filmed in OB. But I do love this show!
