'Friday Night Lights' recap: 'Keep Looking' for some drama

Few dramas can make an absorbing hour out of its characters trying to avoid drama, but Friday Night Lights pulled it off this week.

Those of us clamoring for a Buddy Garrity story line got it this week, although it may not have been the Buddy story we wanted. Picking up on last week’s news from the divorced home-front that Buddy, Jr., had become too much for his mom to handle, the sullen youth was shipped back to Dillon for a paternal tune-up.

Now, I like my Buddy blustering and ebullient; seeing the poor devil drag his bratty son to school, watching Buddy find the kid drunk on the floor of the man’s new bar, witnessing him pour out his frustrations to Eric — well, this was all fine acting on the part of Brad Leland, but it was also a bit of a drag. There were nice moments of coarse realism (Buddy, Jr., referring to East Dillon as “the ghetto school”; Buddy, Jr., conversing with his new guidance counselor Tami by staring at her “rack”; Tami saying Tami things such as “You have grown miles since I last saw you!” while shifting her stack of papers to cover her chest; Buddy, Jr., stealing dad’s credit card), but does anyone think this kid is going to pull it together sufficiently to make the football team? This would be one hail-Mary play too much even for FNL.

Speaking of making the team, Jess gave as good as she got from the lewdly joshing players in her new job as equipment manager. This played out pretty much as we thought it would: Jess’ interplay with the guys irked boyfriend Vince, and more importantly distracted his attention from the game. As if he wasn’t distracted enough by the presence of his dad in the stands, shouting encouragements that this intelligent man must have known would only upset his son. It fell to Eric to call Vince and Jess into his office to try and straighten things out.

Oddest alliance of night? Hands down it was the rapprochement between Becky and Billy Riggins’ wife Mindy. In the space of an hour, Mindy went from disliking the girl for continuing to take up space in their cramped home to defending her from Becky’s lousy father and step-mother. Granted, I could see why Mindy would soften. After all, when Mindy first came home from her former place of employment, the Landing Strip bar, complaining about the lousy shifts she’d been assigned, I thought, this woman should be grateful someone is hiring in Dillon these days. But Becky’s strenuous defense (“He insulted your ass?”) went a long way to melting Mindy’s heart toward the once-and-future beauty-pageant contestant.

At school, Tami tried to cope with the continuing bad behavior of Epyck (yes, this week I learned the spelling of her epic moniker, and as Eric said, “What kind of name is Epyck? Sounds like a name someone comes up with when they’re drunk”). This struggle between student and teacher is as frustrating as the one that’s taking place, in yonder college, between Julie and her Teaching Assistant creep: These relationships are bound to end badly.

All in all, an uneven edition of FNL. Ultimately, Buddy and his son is an interesting avenue to explore (my own desire to see an upbeat Buddy should be tempered by an understanding that the writers have potentially rich material to delve into here). And the scenes between Vince, his mother, and his father were first-rate, really nuanced portrayals of how a broken home can try to repair itself.

What did you think?

Friday Night Lights airs on DirecTV’s 101 Network at 9 p.m. ET.

I hate that I can’t watch Friday Nights Lights until it comes on NBC but at least I was able to see Vince and the lady who plays his mom on Parenthood. So I get a little of my FNL fix.

    • Jobless

I knew that was Vince’s mom! I did a double take during Parenthood last night when that scene was on and nobody believed me that it was the same actress.

    • Jules

      I know. Awesome wasn’t it?

  • Julz

You recapped already? If you’re going to do a recap at least put a little thought into it or don’t do it.

    • Julz

I should say that I adore FNL and I watch it on DirecTV but I haven’t even seen this episode yet.

      • Jessica

Chillz Julz. Ken here probably gets a review copy of the episodes. If only the rest of us were so lucky…

To fellow DirecTV subscribers: One of the best dramas on TV is returning soon: Damages! And it will only be seen on DirecTV’s 101 Network. Season 4 won’t go into production until January, but DirecTV will begin airing episodes from previous seasons beginning on January 5th. Sorry if this is annoying, but I really just want to get the word out because the show is really great and deserves more attention. If you haven’t ever watched it, I suggest checking it out in January before the new season begins later in 2011.
Thank you DirecTV for saving two of the best dramas TV has ever seen, Friday Night Lights and Damages.

    • Dolphin

You speak the truth! I’m forever grateful for Direct TV saving Friday Night Lights!!!!

You left out the most powerful part – that during Luke’s tour of TMU with his Entourage (which could have played out really cheesily), ended with Vince getting pulled aside by the head coach into a meeting with the coaching staff. Very powerful football stuff.

    • Melissa

Okay – so that part confused me. Did they mean TMU lost interest in Luke and only like Vince? Did they purposely invite Luke with the hope of catching Vince? Or do they want both??

      • Matt

They purposely recruited Luke with hope of talking to Vince.

      • mary q contrary

My guess is that they purposefully invited Luke as a means to get to Vince and secure a commitment without anyone there to act in his best interest and convince him to wait and see who else will make offers. I could be wrong, but it seemed like that was what they were leading up to. He looked like a cub being descended on by a pack of hyenas in that last scene.

    • Kendall

My prediction is that those free tickets are going to end up in some suspensions of 4 of the key Lions players–Vince, Luke, Hastings, and Tinker…if so that would be some poor writing because I think Coach would have totally helicoptered over that situation and stopped it before it began.

This episode was my favorite episode of the season so far. It’s astonishing how much the actors potraying Buddy and his son look a like.

    • AntonioSaucedo

Are the actors playing Buddy and Jr related?

      • Jessica

That was my first reaction too! OMG they look so similar. They have the SAME nose!

    • Melissa

I thought that too! I am more optimistic about the storyline…I wish they had brought his son home last season.

      • Bhotak

Wow, hard criitc on that but after reading your criitcs I gotta agree with you. Story line a bit bored..-= Supia´s last blog .. =-.

  • jony

I never understood what this show is about. Anyone care to explain? Maybe it’s aimed at Americans, and only they can see something they like it in it.

    • Michelle

You would think because it centers on a football coach that if you’re not a football fan you won’t be into this show. But trust me, as a Canadian who doesn’t love football, this is hands down the best written and delivered drama in years. Completely engrossing, give it a try!

    • JC

It’s about the triumphs and tragedies of middle-class America.

      • mary q contrary

        Hear, hear!

    • EAP

well, I’m from the Dominican Republic and I love this show.

  • LeeLee

FNL and Damages are my two favorite’s. However, DirecTV sucks where I live, so I cancelled it a year or so ago. I look forward to FNL on NBC, but hate that I won’t be able to see Damages any longer. Personally, I would rather do without the show than have to endure the constant screw-ups I got from DirecTV. With that being said, I am glad that they at least realize that these two shows are great!

  • Jessica

Anyone else worried that the door closing on Vince in the Head Coaches office is going to throw a wrench into the rest of his season??? It smells iffy…

    • Mikey

I’m wondering about rules regarding college recruiting regarding the game tickets – Luke receives the tickets, so he’s the fall guy, but Vince is the one pulled into an on-campus meeting without anyone else to watch out for his own interests (I’m guessing that college recruiters crave face-time with hot prospects away from their high school coaches).

      • Benoreno

I wondered if this was some kind of set-up, too? TMU “courted” Luke, but Vince was actually the “real” target of the recruiters. Poor Luke. Always the victim.

      • jenn

I wondered if this would have a Cam Newton-AJ Green-UNC like NCAA violation activity for taking the free tickets. And, it was a lot of the team that went! But, I guess they went a different way when they took Vince to a different room.

      • Dolphin

Benoreno, I thought the same thing you posted. Luke was just used to get to Vince (around Coach because those TMU recruiters know Coach T all too well, and they know Vince has received some big offers from some other big schools). I smell trouble.

      • Melissa

Poor Luke. I hope the season ends with him having some type of happy ending.

    • JC

The tickets are no issue. That is completely allowed under NCAA regulations and happens all the time. I myself was given tickets to games for official visits. I do think that something shady is going to be offered to Vince behind the closed doors, though.

  • Jules

I loved the development between Mindy and Becky. I know Becky can be an annoying character but it’s played so well and it’s great to see someone (besides Tim) stick up for this kid.

Also kind of a shock at the end at TMU.

I love the way the writers have kept a connection to older characters through the new Riggins clan. It makes it clear why they went through all that with Becky and Tim last season. I really really like Mindy. She and Billy are sort of adults now (wow did i just write that?) and looking after Becky is a really good role for Mindy!

    • mary q contrary

Agreed. I love how they gave Mindy a sort of new Tyra to play off, but they gave the character a completely different identity, per what would actually happen outside TV land. Grrrr. Every time I’m reminded what a wholly real and subtle show this is, I’m also reminded that NOBODY watches it because they’re all too busy watching mind-numbingly soulless crap like Dancing With The Stars. Why is America so stupid?

  • Jeff

This episode was ok the only storyline that isn’t great so far this season is Julie’s. It will be interesting to see how the TMU storyline plays out and maybe Luke won’t be the victim.

The casting directors did a good job of casting a new Buddy Jr. who looks a lot like Brad Leland.

    • jenn

I agree with you on the casting-dead on! With the introduction of Buddy Jr. and seeing more new faces makes me wish for another season of FNL. I’m going to wonder what’s going on in the Taylor household after this is all said and done.. The same thing I do when I wonder what the Gilmore Girls are up to.

    • Melissa

Yes, the Julie storyline is the worst!! So many shows have done the teacher/student thing. Boring!! I would rather not see Julie at all.

  • Josh

I’m still enjoying the show, but it’s feeling very off to me this season. Maybe I just miss the old kids. The new ones are great, but it’s just not the same. There are literally none of the original kids on this show except for Julie, and her story is pretty bland/cliche, if you ask me.

  • Dolphin

I like this season as a whole, but knowing it’s the final of a 13 episode season … I worry about all these knew characters (Hastings, Epyck, Buddy Jr.) and their story lines on top of last season’s new characters PLUS the elevated older characters of Billy and Mindy Riggins. I dunno about you, but I don’t want to see the show lose its focus. (Oh, yeah … and we have the out of town Jule story line going on, too.) Yep, it’s too much … too expanded.

Here’s to hoping the writers keep their eye on the prize (the Taylors, the Lions, some of the older characters, i.e., Tim, Matt, Smash, Jason, Lyla, Tyra) and keep the show tight the remainder of this final season!

    • mary q contrary

I’m worried about that, too. I’m actually liking this season as a whole, though last night was probably the weakest so far. I just wonder how they’re going to wrap it up in the end. I would hate to miss out on decent plot resolution, and it does seem like they’ve got a lot on their plate. Oh, and as far as Julie’s storyline is concerned, I’m kind of cool with it. It’s really believable, if you think about it. She’s obviously feeling lonely, and she’s always been believably smart and anyone can see she’s attractive. I buy this guy being into her, and I buy Julie being vulnerable enough to let herself fall into the trap. And honestly, this kind of thing happens ALL THE TIME. I mean think about how many male teachers would date even their high school students if it were legal.

    • Maxi

      - Hey there Shell!I am still lvoing your photography. I’m getting ready to upgrade some lenses. I know you shoot with a D700 right? What is your favorite lens for these portraits?? Needing some shopping help. IF you have a min I’d love to hear from you!! Thanks bunches. Suzy

  • DanOregon

I’ve got to think the Julie storyline is all about setting up a reunion with Saracen. The dipshit TA is her Chicago.
