Keith Olbermann will be back on MSNBC on Tuesday

Keith Olbermann, suspended last week by MSNBC for making political donations, will be back hosting Countdown with Keith Olbermann on Tuesday night.

In a statement released Sunday evening, MSNBC president Phil Grifffin said, “I have determined that suspending Keith through and including Monday night’s program is an appropriate punishment for his violation of our policy. We look forward to having him back on the air Tuesday night.”

Olbermann, on his Twitter account, wrote: “Greetings From Exile! A quick, overwhelmed, stunned THANK YOU for support that feels like a global hug & obviously left me tweetless XO.”

This short trip to the woodshed will bring to an end a controversial punishment, and is nicely timed for a lot of publicity. It’s likely that every talk show — news and entertainment — on Monday will be making Olbermann comments and jokes, and as I wrote earlier, it’s going to be most fun to see what, first, Jon Stewart has to say about the situation on Monday night, and, second, what Olbermann says on the air upon his return on Tuesday night.

What do you think about Olbermann’s rapid reinstatement?

We love Keith and can hardly wait for his return. He is the best at what he does. LONG LIVE KEITH OLBERMANN!!

    • Larry David

I just wet myself thinking about Glenn Beck.

    • LOL

      GOP fears Olbermann and Maddow.

      • Brett

Why is that, I’m wondering? Since MSNBC’s viewership is a fraction of Fox News’ viewership….

      • LOL

Because Republican liars always fear truth. Facts have a well-known liberal bias.

      • Tarc

Because Faux News is scripted fiction… all scripted fiction has better ratings. After all, it’s re-written to be more ‘sexy’, controversial, and biased.

      • whatevs

@LOL, I’m pretty sure liars of all political affiliations fear truth, what with them being liars and all…

      • john

        obama fears fox. lol.

      • Tom

Olbermann…didn’t he used to be on ESPN? Whatever happened to him? No idea who Maddow is.

      • JS

Olbermann’s gone the loopy liberal commentator route to try to make a living, and Maddow’s in the same boat. Their shtick is a poor attempt to imitate the right wing commentators out there. Basically, they just make asses out of themselves.

      • rayr

When did MSNBC ever worry about truth and WHAT ARE FACTS?

    • Larry David

Then I put my hand down there and smelled the wetness and it smelled.

    • C.Ryan

Whoever you are, we’re getting bored with your mindless interjections. No one will mind if you excuse yourself and go tend to your needs.

    • jmo

Amen CRyan. It’s been weeks of white noise nonsense with this “Larry David” commentor.

    • Dave Brehm

      AMEN !

    • MaryJane

They’d better have, I was seriously considering not watching any of the MSNBC shows anymore if they hadn’t allowed Keith to return. He has rather strong opinions about many folks of the right, but his is an enjoyable show that brings a smile to my face after listening to all of the looney comments coming out of these politicians this year. I don’t think that anyone in their right mind ever considered Keith to be a serious news reporter, in which case one would hold him up to a higher standard; he is not a reporter, and MSNBC knows this, they ought to be ashamed of themselves for having reprimanded him in the first place, while the folks over at FOX continually flaunt their politics and RAISE money for their beliefs.

    • rayr

You know we are all better off when we can watch a clown in the eveniing. Welcome back Keith. I hope you use some big words Tuesday night!!!

  • Redeyecat

Olby’s back – Ken Tucker and his other 3 viewers must be ecstatic!

    • jaydee

Actually his demo of viewers 18-35 crushes the Billo the clowns viewers. O’Liars audience of fat,old and angry viewers will die off soon as will all the insanity at Fox noise!

      • rayr

I think you mean the 18 to 18 years 2 months age group, because Keith’s ratings don’t crush anybody, but don’t let the facts get in your way. Keep on opinionating, that’s what you’re good at, Butch (from Butch Cassidy and Sundance if you are not old enough to know the movie)

      • john

please present the facts, the ratings to back up your claim/your theory. if you can present stats to back up your comment i will gladly believe you that keith crushes bill’s rating with that demographic. thank you.

  • kim in kentucky

glad he’s back – I mean, he only contributed money – he didn’t publically endorse any person or appear at any rally

  • Jaime

    I LOVE KELLY CLARKSON!!!!

    • AcaseofGeo

      I MISS EARTHA KITT!!!!

      • Lofn G

        Damn….I do too!

  • Q

When Juan Williams was fired, the politicians were outraged. When Olbermann was suspended, the fans were outraged.

As such, I’m not surprised that this was a short suspension. You can’t be a successful station by alienating those who watch you. I think Maddow’s take on the situation was eloquent and accurate and I look forward to Olbermann’s return. And, yes, I’m sure that the timing was to dent the anger towards MSNBC (saving tomorrow’s ratings) and give everyone time to schedule watching Countdown (bumping up Tuesday’s ratings).

    • rayr

Maybe Keith will make it to number 20 in the ratings with his “bump” in the ratings

  • MJ

After seeing Rachel Maddow’s comments, it should be obvious to any thinking person that there is indeed a huge difference between MSNBC and FOX.

    • Liam Gallagher

Because she has no horse in the race, right?

      • Sunny

That’s right, Liam. All of her horse is in her face.

    • DGH

      @MJ
The only difference is one’s a liberal channel the other is a conservative channel!

      • LIBERAL WOMAN

No, DGH, I’ll repeat it for you: Fox “News” doesn’t deal in facts; they are merely tools of the corporate right and bend any truths to their ideology and will send out the “talking points” to every conservative outlet. That’s why you hear the same catch-phrases for the day repeated dozens of times. MSNBC, in spite of being owned by GE, is not lying in their reporting: it is the only place on television with intelligent analysis, reporting of events as fact and different opinions pointed out as such.

    • rayr

Liberal Woman – when are you going to realize that you should not mention facts as one of your talking points? You know that liberals can’t sound serious when they discuss facts – only opinions.

      • john

so, LIBERAL WOMAN…let me get this straight…fox is always wrong and they are the only news outlet with an agenda. msnbc and keith are always right. YOU are always right. typical condescending liberal/dem. perspective. get off of your high horse and come back down to earth and smell the reality.

      • LIBERAL WOMAN

Faux News: they are informing their viewers ONLY ONE POINT OF VIEW: that of the corporate Neocon rich elite in order to further their fiscal agenda. The deficit is actually DOWN 8%; the middle class tax cuts, put in place by Obama, have LOWERED YOUR TAXES, John. You will not hear these facts on Fox. Is that serious enough for you, rayr?

      • john

all the news networks…both political parties…it is all big business…and it is business as usual. meet the new boss same as the old boss. neither political party has it right 100% of the time. the dems are not more evolved. the reps are not a sub-species.

    • john

so if someone thinks something other than what you do…they are not a thinking person. how humble of you.

  • Maria

It was ridiculous that he got suspended and I’m glad he’s coming back! Team Keith!

    • caroline

And the cosmic balance is corrected. Go Team Keith!!

    • rayr

Sign a contract and break one of the rules – that doesn’t count for anything, because what is your word worth? For a liberal words are just words. They really don’t mean anything! Insulting Senate candidates, the POTUS, going to a baseball game when you told your boss your father was dying, it doesn’t mean anything – they are only words. Don’t let the facts get in your way. Go Keith! Make sure you use a couple BIG WORDS Tuesday. You know that inimitable way you learned at CORNELL. Did you know that Keith went to Cornell? I can see Yale from my front door at work!!!!!!

      • john

        thanks rayr. well stated.

      • LIBERAL WOMAN

As it turns out, it was never in his contract. So there were no grounds to suspend him in the first place.

  • o. Jean-Jacques

Keith is the best and if he did not return I will never ever watch MSNBC. Good luck Keith the public love you

    • Tom

Don’t do it! Your only sources for news left would be Comedy Central and EW.com.

    • Kevin

Well good thing he’s back. MSNBC would have really missed your viewership. Seriously, they’re the only news network that notices when one person stops watching.

    • rayr

MSNBC REALLY REALLY appreciates you watching the shows. That’s a 10% spike in their viewership!!!

      • john

lol. good one ray r !

    • Sunny

Poor, dumb frenchie. You spelled ‘pubic’ wrong. Figures.

  • rex ozone

For a minute there I thought that the fourth reich, giddy over it’s big and corporate theft of the latest election had wiped it’s oily hand across the vestige of network neutrality. Glad Keith will be back even though they were testing us and their power against popular opinion of thoughtful, intelligent responce. Their next cutailment of freedom of expression and truth will likely be more egregious and long lasting. Harsh.

    • Brett

“Network neutrality”? Pal, what have YOU been smoking? MSNBC is unabashedly liberal, and Olbermann and Maddow make no bones about their political leanings. “Neutrality” is not “anti-conservative,” it’s the absence of any political viewpoint. You’ll never see that, on either Fox or MSNBC.

      • john

        you are 100% correct.

      • jaydee

You Sir are 100% WRONG!! Only the hours from 8-11 are so called liberals! From 7am-8pm its a bash democrats and blame them for everything. Ratiagn hates the Gov and big business but he has stated he is a fiscal conserv.Matthews always lets the right wingers lie and only rarely does he ever attack them only when the stupidity of the right just cannot be defended! So get it right only Fox has a 24 hr bias!

      • john

if the right can do no better than bill o’r, rush and beck and the left can do no better than Rachael and keith, then we are all in a lot of trouble! they are all guilty of having an agenda, using the media for their opinions, slandering their opposition, not reporting the facts, but instead reporting their slant on them, etc.

      • john

don’t be so naive as to believe that all mainstream news outlets don’t have an agenda. also they all cherry pick what they are going to report and how they are going to report it. they all put their slant on it. don’t believe that msnbc doesn’t lie and mis-report either just because they are telling you what you want to hear. keith, rush, rachel, beck: to me they are all the same thing. they might as well all be the same person. i would go as far as to say there is not a penis among them. they have all been castrated by their bosses.

      • john

jaydee is so brain-washed by the liberals they are beginning to talk like keith…with the sarcastic ‘sir’ and all.

    • john

sarcasm and a condescending attitude can never lead to compassion. sarcasm and a condescending attitude are attributes of a ego bound personality. either the person is over compensating for their own feelings of inferiority or they actually do feel they are superior to others. how can anyone who is bound by their own ego be compassionate towards any one else? they can’t. they especially can’t feel compassion for those of a differing view. they must make it a us vs. them situation and huddle up with a group of the same perspective.

    • john

i do not believe that one political party is right 100% of the time and the other is wrong 100% of the time. both parties are made up of people…imperfect, flawed, fallible people. both parties contain people who are concerned, compassionate, sincere. both parties contain liars. both parties contain members who are only concerned about themselves. neither party is batting 1,000 on being right all the time and having what everyone in the country needs.fox news is conservative, that is no worse than abc, nbc, cbs, cnn, cnn hln and especially msnbc leaning to the left. evidently they/the left fails to realize that what they hate is actually what they are. the names are different, but the same accusations can be made. msnbc is no more unbiased news than fox. none of the major news outlets is without an agenda. none are merely reportedly the facts. they ALL have an agenda. just because one news network tells you what you want to hear/what you all ready agree with, that doesn’t make them right or superior to any other of the political mouth pieces spouting off their propaganda. the left is just as brain washed as the right. msnbc lulls their audience into zombification just like fox does their’s.

      • john

i am not a conservative nor am i a liberal. i am a moderate. when i didn’t like W the left thought i was cool. now that i don’t like obama they/the left/the liberals try to say i am a racist. bill maher and left from their statements seem to believe that just because one is a member of their political party you automatically have a higher iq. they seem to believe that if one is not a democrat then automatically you are a subhuman…a sub-species. i have heard the liberals many times say they felt they ‘were more evolved’ than conservatives. with an attitude like that how can they even claim to have compassion for everyone in this nation. just like the far right, the far left wants to shut their opposition up and both the far left and the far right use the media to try to paint a negative, inferior picture of the other.

    • rayr

Use smaller words or learn to spell!! Response not reponse. Curtailment not cutailment. Egregious was a nice touch.

    • Liberal Lunatic

Speaking of reichs, rex ozone, how mad do you think the nazi was when he found out that Olbermann’s mama spent the marks on sauerkraut instead of an abortion?

  • Glenn Beck

Is it just me or does Bill o’Reilly’s breath stink?

    • Carla

      Everything about O’Reilly stinks.

      • O’Reilly

        Everything about Carla stinks more.

  • JT

Who’s Keith Olbermann and what’s MSNBC?

    • anamarie

If you could pull your nose out of Glenn Becks a$$ once in a while and you would know

      • Tom

He’s that sportscaster guy, right? Whatever happened to him?

      • Jeff

He got kicked off Sunday Night Football.

      • Rachel Maddow

anamarie, I’d like you to stop typing and put your nose back in my a$$!

  • gary blackburn

I think Mr Olbermann should be suspended permanently. Not just for his political contributions, but his negative, caustic attitude. I am not political nor a big fan of George W. Bush, but the way Olbermann would scream, rant, rave and disrespect Mr. Bush was unforgiveable; and a sitting President at that. The management needs to be shaken up for allowing his antics. Would any media comment that way about F.D.R.,J.F.K. or Ike? No way. Olbermann’s mission and newscast consists of looking for any clip or soundbite on some conservative and repeat it 3-4 times and laugh smugly thinking he knows everything and makes no mistakes. There had only been one perfect man and he was killed for being the son of God. Mr. Olbermann needs to go back to school to learn respect and manners. BTW he is a terrible sportscaster, please take him off.Bill Gates needs to get involved with this incident, it reflects badly on Microsoft and GE also.

    • anamarie

by that logic we should shut down all of Fox News.

      • gary blackburn

I am totally logical and accurate. Maybe more people should take critical thinking in college, I did.

      • craig

Anamarie, you don’t know what you talk about. Get your head out of the proverbial left wing a$$ you are sniffing.

      • Shurly

Exactly. When Fox News rants and lies about President Obama, it’s normal. When Mr Olbermann does the same thing about the craziest dumbest president America has ever seen, well, HE should be fired. Way to be objective Craig !!

      • Tarc

Precisely. Or just for lying 24-7-365…

    • Brett

Gary, if you don’t like what he does, don’t watch. I don’t. I don’t watch Fox News with its pompous, self-righteous “personalities” and its more than occasional making up of stories, and I don’t watch MSNBC for much the same reasons (though, to their credit, MSNBC doesn’t just outright lie to its audience).

      • gary blackburn

        Brett,
I don’t make it a point to watch either. I channel surf and when I make the mistake of catching Olbermann it is not journalisn but entertainment for the left. If any network lies to it’s audience, they should be heald responsible. Both networks have their agenda and I don’t think MSNBC is any less innocent than FOX.I am not a Fox fan either, I like some newscasters on both networks.

      • john

don’t be so naive as to believe that all mainstream news outlets don’t have an agenda. also they all cherry pick what they are going to report and how they are going to report it. they all put their slant on it. don’t believe that msnbc doesn’t lie and mis-report either just because they are telling you what you want to hear. keith, rush, rachel, beck: to me they are all the same thing. they might as well all be the same person. i would go as far as to say there is not a penis among them. they have all been castrated by their bosses.

    • audrey50

Well stated, Gary. I couldn’t agree more. There is no other personality on TV news that’s more caustic and divisive than he.

      • Shurly

Ever heard of Glenn Beck ?

      • gary blackburn

        Thanks Audrey

      • Tarc

Um, Rush and Beck take the cake by a couple orders of magnitude.

    • trinity

the son of god was perfect? sorry to break it to you, but jesus was a perfect con man, that is all..sweet talk his way through life and convinced a bunch of fools to believe he was the only son of “god”.. men like him have existed through out history. They are only good at manipulating the simpletons who couldnt think for themselves.. And you know who else did it? Hitler and republicans..

      • wanderer08

Couldn’t agree more Trinity well said

      • Jeffeh

I wasn’t aware atheists had a pony in this fight. So of the billions of “simpleton’s” who believe in religion, you honestly believe they’ve all just been fooled? You are more than a tool trinity, your the entire tool shed. All networks have a bias, both report skewed versions of the truth to think there is a difference in Bill O’Reilly and Keith Olberman is preposterous. The only difference is Fox News promotes O’Reilly better so he ended up with the higher rated show. Its also of note apparently now the “evil” republicans as you call them have complete control of the house. So I guess all those “American voters” also were fooled huh trinity?

Go stand on the atheist soap box and preach to another crowd, this is about partisan television, not your atheist agenda.

      • whatevs

I’m glad you were alive at that time to enlighten us now. You must’ve been there, if you’re passing all of this information off as fact, right?

      • gary blackburn

obviously you don’t believe in the Bible, and not a Christian. We have nothing further to talk about Mr Trinity.

      • Rev Al Sharpton

trinity – go back to your Hitler blow-up doll, you spastic, plastic freak! And take a bath!

    • Lofn G

@ gary: I took critical thinking in college, and yeah, I learned that censoring all dissenting opinions is the best way to inform people and let them make up their own minds.

      • gary blackburn

They don’t teach that in critical thinking. They teach a person to think logically. The other part of your comment you learned in a philosophy class.A person who passes critical thinking would make such an off base comment.

    • jaydee

Gary your a fool.We need to people like Keith to keep the crazy right wingers in line! Without his anger the insanity of the right goes unchallenged. And Jeffeh the American voters were fooled by the Tea-Party the will be hurt the most by the very same people they voted for!And for Fox promoting O’Liar better they are only promoting fear, hate, racism and intolerance. They are also making America a dumber nation,Fox and Friends does this everyday!

      • gary blackburn

I guess you haven’t heard this is not a forum where you attack and defame the people who comment, stick to the issue. The issue is msnbc has an employment policy thay forbids commentators and others from making political donations. Take your complaint to MSNBC.

      • LIBERAL WOMAN

Thanks, jaydee. Trying to say all that as well; once religion gets its ugly head in any blog, well, it sorta bogs down a bit. I thought the subject was Olbermann and opinions vs. facts.

      • Sunny

jaydee – it’s ‘you’re,’ not ‘your.’ You shouldn’t be pointing the ‘dumber’ finger at anyone. Your spelling, punctuation and grammar stinks almost as badly as the content. The influx of uneducated immigrants is what’s causing any measurable loss, so step away from the chat and either get back to work or get back to school. Take LIBERAL WOMAN with you. She obviously needs to be schooled. Or laid. Good luck with that, since she is, without any doubt, an historically-ugly democrat.

      • Ashley

-I TiVo both KO and Rachel, usually watch both sllhtgiy later in the evening (they are on at 8 and 9, respectively). Rachel also made a point last night that her entire show now is available as a podcast. Apparently previously it was only 13 minutes. So you can download the show and watch or listen anytime. They are both must see for me!

    • jaydee

What school did you go to? Beck Univ? You really should not brag you went to college by defending and supporting these people its clear you should get your money back! Or did you get a Federal Grant?

      • gary blackburn

Jaydee, reread my comment. I am not defending anyone or any network.I am commenting against Mr. Olbermann. Critical thinking is a class that many here should take, and no I paid my way through college.

  • Carrie

Fantastic news! I was worried there for a while that he wouldn’t be coming back. His reinstatement was well worth my petition signature, and that of hundreds of thousands of others.

    • Sunny

Really? You and, “…hundreds of thousands of others…” actually wasted your time to sign a petition? Foolish sheep. I’d suggest that you volunteer, since you have so much free time but, frankly, you’re not volunteer material… so, don’t.

  • sam

Very happy. Countdown without Keith is not worth watching. He is the reason I watch MSNBC. I know that there are people who disagree with him. I assume that they are watching Fox News, so we can all be happy.

    • james

i don’t watch fox news and i think Keith is an idiot

      • jaydee

You lie !! Every time someone says they dont watch Fox they are actually watching Fox and Friends and pleasuring themselves!! Oh sorry did I go to far or just hit a nerve!!

    • MaryJane

I agree, I don’t watch the show on the days when Keith is not there. I think that he is actually the only reason a lot of folks tune in for their nighttime shows.

      • PeeWee Herman

Either that, or they’re just waiting for their new batch of kiddie porn to arrive!

  • Mayu

oh come on. Am I the only one who thinks ratings scam?

Juan Williams was fired from NPR and became the talk of the nation giving FOX major ratings whenever he was on to talk about his plight.

Suddenly, Olbermann is Suspended “indefinately” (for less than a week) right after the pathetic ratings numbers MSNBC pulled in during election night?

I think MSNBC is tired of falling behind fox news and was manufacturing news events for ratings.

    • genius

      Mayu,
No you are not the only one that thinks that way, and it is absurd.
If you would like to discuss ratings, that is a whole other issue.
Would you like fries with your burger?

      • john

sarcasm and a condescending attitude can never lead to compassion. sarcasm and a condescending attitude are attributes of a ego bound personality. either the person is over compensating for their own feelings of inferiority or they actually do feel they are superior to others. how can anyone who is bound by their own ego be compassionate towards any one else? they can’t. they especially can’t feel compassion for those of a differing view. they must make it a us vs. them situation and huddle up with a group of the same perspective.
