'South Park' review: 'It's a Jersey Thing' kills 'Real Housewives,' 'Jersey Shore,' and Osama bin Laden

Killing three birds with one stone, South Park took on Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and Osama bin Laden this week. When animated versions of Teresa from Housewives and Snooki from Shore invaded South Park, Colo., the citizenry became enraged. It’s one thing for Cartman and his buddies to READ FULL STORY »

'Glee': It's not that it's gotten bad, it's just that it can do anything it wants... over and over and over...

When Glee premiered, I was a big supporter of the show — it struck me as fresh, innovative, funny, and occasionally touching. Now in its second season, Glee regularly makes my skin crawl — it srikes me as repetitive, preachy, mawkish, and only occasionally funny.

From the comments I’m reading on EW.com and elsewhere, some of you feel the same way.

So what’s happened to Glee? Well, it became READ FULL STORY »

'Chase' review: For one night, at least, better than 'House'

After poking fun of Chase for being a generically titled adventure show, I have a confession: I’ve watched every episode. I know what it’s trying to be — Justified with a woman, complete with daddy-issues — and I know that on those terms, it’s a failure. But if you watch it just for the (duh) chase scenes, which are skillfully staged, and for the way star Kelli Giddish’s mouth turns as southward as her twangy accent, it can be fun.

Grim fun, to be sure, as was proven this week, when House refugee Jennifer Morrison guest-starred as READ FULL STORY »

'Carlos' tonight: Left-wing extremism turned into art

You have a fine opportunity tonight: Carlos, the extraordinary film about the real-life international terrorist Carlos the Jackal, will begin airing this evening on the Sundance Channel. The movie is scheduled to open in some theaters on Friday. Don’t miss the chance to watch it at home: Think Scarface with radical politics.

The movie stars Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum; Che) as the man who took the name “Carlos” once he began READ FULL STORY »

The Fall TV season that failed us: Are you hooked on any of the new shows?

All the new fall TV shows have premiered. Have you put season passes on your favorites yet? Have you been discussing new shows the morning after with your friends and co-workers?

I’ll bet you haven’t.

This has proven to be the least buzzed-about TV season in recent memory. Among people I talk to, within and outside of EW, not one network show has inspired passionate affection. Sure, most people who’ve seen Raising Hope agree that it’s funny. I enjoyed the pilot of Hawaii Five-O, but I can’t say I’m hooked. Ditto No Ordinary Family, which has possibilities as the show begins to balance its light and dark elements. But the one series so many READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live' review: Jane Lynch was a gleefully good host

Jane Lynch really sold her theme song for Glee during the opening moments of this week’s Saturday Night Live. Wearing a fetching off-the-shoulder jacket and backed by Fred Armisen on guitar, Lynch took the Sue Sylvester-centric lyrics and performed them with disarming energy. That opening performance characterized her work throughout the entire show; even during READ FULL STORY »

'Smallville' recap: 'Supergirl,' secret identities, and latex

What a clever final season Smallville is having. The series is concentrating on that combination of power and doubt that Clark Kent has always had difficulty sorting out and using it to fuel the final story-lines. This week, Laura Vandervoort’s Kara returned to warn Clark of a coming “darkness.”

We already know it’s Darkseid, but this week, some essence of that dark malevolence invaded the body of READ FULL STORY »

Lou Dobbs showdown on 'Good Morning America,' MSNBC: 'A smear piece, a political assault'

Lou Dobbs is under siege, taking to news shows ranging from Good Morning America to MSNBC’s new The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell to defend himself against a cover story in the current issue of The Nation that alleges he has hired illegal immigrants.

Briefly stated, the charges are summarized by The Nation’s headline: “American Hypocrite.” Reporter Isabel McDonald contends that READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' recap: 'Real is just a matter of perception'

In the alternating schedule of the alternating-universe season of Fringe, this week’s hour took place on the “other side,” where our Olivia has been steadily absorbing the memories of her swaggering counterpart. We followed a Fringe Division case all the way through the hour, about a man who can start chain reactions that result in death.

Most of the mythology aspects of the episode were front-loaded at the start of the hour:

So the Secretary/Walternate has clued in Col. Broyles (is it my imagination, or does Lance Reddick get more buff with every episode?) to the idea that he’s keeping Olivia here because she can cross back and forth between worlds, and he wants to extract this knowledge from her. If, in the meantime, she can be used to solve Fringe cases, so much the better, right?

This week’s episode, entitled “The Plateau,” was at once cool-looking, heart-tugging, and pretty simple, compared to first-rate previous Fringe heart-tuggers such as “White Tulip,” the Peter Weller dilly last season. In this one, Milo, who’d been subjected to READ FULL STORY »
