Barbara Billingsley, most famous as June Cleaver on Leave It To Beaver, has died at age 94. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Billingsley defined the classic suburban sitcom mother. A full-time mom invariably attired in a dress, pearls, and heels, June Cleaver was at once an accurate snapshot of a certain kind of American mother, a role model, and a fantasy of the sort of maternal figure millions of people enjoyed watching for Beaver‘s six seasons.
Billingsley played June without a trace of irony and a firm confidence. While June knew her place and deferred to her husband, Ward, in most matters of child-rearing, Billingsley’s portrayal allowed you to understand that June knew how to guide both her husband and her sons to do the correct thing through suggestion and by example. Watch how Billingsley subtly navigates the shoals of parenthood in this scene:
In her pre-Beaver days, Billingsley appeared in movies such as The Bad and the Beautiful and Invaders From Mars, often playing tougher characters. Post-Beaver, she displayed her sense of humor in the 1980 comedy Airplane!:
Billingsley was a classy presence on a classic TV show. If the role she played on Beaver was later satirized with the knowing cynicism of our age, Billingsley’s acting should be remembered as first-rate, as an embodiment of a time that was perhaps more innocent, but which called for an equal amount of skill and grace.

She will be sorely missed and will always live on in repeats of Beaver and Airplane , i love to watch her speak jive.
Right on about the Jive, turkey.
She was good, but Elyse Keaton will always be the queen of sitcom mothers to me, she was incredibly hot, wonderful voice, and her arguments with Alex seemed like the most genuine interactions a 30 min sitcom could produce
I remember her from the Partridge Family. I loved that show. Her interaction David and Ricky and Ozzie were hilarious.
RIP Mrs. Cleaver
Why aren’t tv Moms like her anymore? Because we are not the Beaver?
Are we human? Or are we Beaver? My sign is vital, my hand is cold
That’s funny as hell
She is a classic tv mom with class. She will be missed.
I was never a huge fan of Leave it to Beaver, but I always liked Billingsley. There was something about her voice that was very comforting. And I loved her in Airplane. I still saw her as June Cleaver, and hearing the Beaver’s mom speak jive was absolutely hilarious to me.
I’ve read so many comments on other sites as well as this one about Mrs. Billingsly and no one even mentions her voice work as Nanny for the Muppet Babies cartoon. Dave mentions the comforting voice, and she had one of the best! Sleep well sweet lady…
Ah yes! I forgot about her voice work as Nanny on Muppet Babies! That was one of my favorite cartoons when I was a kid.
She will be missed. A great lady with a fine sense of humor. I always wanted to wear pearls when I did housework! RIP, we love you.
We loved you, June Cleaver! You lead a great life with incredible grace and humor. Rest in Peace, Barbara…
Barbara Billingsley will be an icon in U.S. history. I remember watching “Leave It To Beave” as a child. Guess what, I still watch it today and sometimes I pretend, I live in a world like the Cleavers without confusion. Unfortunately, the United States has gone downhill over the years and it doesn’t seen like we are living in the U.S.
She live to almost see on 95th birthday in December 2010, but she lived a full life on earth to be 94. I will remember her speaking jive in the movie “Airplane”. She was a cool white woman who knew how to speak the jive language. LOL
Her part in Airplane was one of the most memorable scenes
She’ll always be Nanny from the Muppet Babies to me

Such a good mom, you never wondered if Eddie and Lumpy gave her the business while Ward was at the office.
I was invited with a friend to Barbara Billingsley’s home (Malibu, Ca.) in the early eighties and found her charming. She pointed to her pearl necklace and asked, “You know why I always where this? It’s because I have a hallow on my throat and hit brings attention away from it.” Afterwards when I left to visit Tony Dow that same day, she called to see if we had arrived yet. Just like a Mom!
Great story. Thanks for sharing!
