'The Walking Dead' premiere review: AMC's new zombie mad-men; what did you think?

Any wistful Mad Men fan who turned on AMC Sunday night thinking, perhaps, that there might be an MM rerun, or perhaps an hour of Halloween outtakes in which Sally Draper takes a hatchet to her Mommy Dearest, may have been startled to come upon the opening scene of The Walking Dead: In an effort to communicate the kind of show you’re in for, Walking Dead had its hero, Sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) shoot a little-girl zombie in the head. If you didn’t get drawn in by that splatter-shock, this was clearly not the show for you.

The Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman’s comic books, takes the standard modern zombie trope—urban survivors of a zombie invasion —and faces down the problem with turning that notion into a weekly series. The challenge was to make running away from zombies (called “walkers” here) engrossing every week. Under READ FULL STORY »

'Saturday Night Live' review: 'Wham, bam, thank you, Hamm'

A good host frequently seems to bring out the best in Saturday Night Live, and this was true of Jon Hamm… at least in the sketches and taped pieces in which he was involved. (Even his SNL logo bridges coming out of the commercials were funny.) He got the obligatory Mad Men material out of the way in the opening segment, coming up READ FULL STORY »

'Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear' review: Jon Stewart led his nation, unevenly, and mostly against the media

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert led their “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” from the National Mall to a crowd at what Stewart estimated as “over ten million people.” And if you believe that, you believe that John Legend does justice to Bill Withers music.

A gigantic-scale put-on laced with sincerity, the rally had something for almost everyone. This was typified by a “train” music medley: Cat Stevens/Yusuf’s “Peace Train,” Ozzie Osbourne’s “Crazy Train,” and the O’Jays’ “Love Train.” (When it comes to art, the O’Jays won.)

The event was an assiduously shambling affair aimed more at the assembled throng than the TV and internet audience, which was as it should be, given a crowd that held up signs with sentiments such as “Don’t Be Mean” and “I Have A Really Big Sign.”

Some highlights:

• Sam Waterston read a rally-themed poem written by Colbert featuring the rhyme scheme of your average Dr. Seuss book.

• Among the medals bestowed by Stewart and Colbert, two excellent ones stood out: One, a Medal of Reasonableness to READ FULL STORY »

'Smallville' recap: A 'Harvest' of pitchforks, baldness, and sex

In an awkwardly bifurcated edition of Smallville, Clark and Lois spent the hour with a nutty backwoods cult, while Tess had her hands full with a rapidly-aging Alexander.

Clark took Lois off on a jaunt to cover a “cherry festival” — an excuse to keep her from attending the “anti-hero rally” being held in Metropolis. They encountered a group of so-called “Believers,” who, with blue Kryptonite in their water supply and a penchant for human sacrifice, temporarily overcame Clark and Lois. The villagers were old horror-movie cliches, complete with pitchforks and flaming torches.

The tedium was lifted briefly during Lois’ final speech to the Believers, in which she started riffing spontaneously about what Clark’s super-powers would do to them if they all didn’t kneel before his mightiness. Soon enough, however, Lois was cheerfully referring to this escapade as “our Stephen King romp.” Once again, Erica Durance made the most of her dialogue with a bright twinkle.

The other half of the hour was more pertinent to this last season of Smallville, a story line about READ FULL STORY »
