'Terriers' and 'Hellcats' premiere reviews: Which one did you like? Which did you think was a dog?

Terriers and Hellcats both premiered on Wednesday night, shows that probably have mutually exclusive audiences. I can’t imagine that anyone who got caught up in Hellcats‘ tale of a hotsy law student who turns to cheerleading to pay the bills also dug the grungy pair of READ FULL STORY »

'Sons of Anarchy' season premiere review: 'Dad's gonna kill me'

As if shaking off a series of body-blows, Sons of Anarchy commenced its new season on Tuesday night with deliberation — in a fugue state, almost.

The story picked up where last season left off. Gemma is in the wind, on the lam from a murder-rap frame-up; she doesn’t even know the crucial fact that Jax’s baby son, Abel, had been READ FULL STORY »

Barbara Walters returns to 'The View': Guest David Letterman says he'd like to kill Jon Stewart

Barbara Walters returned to The View to kick off the show’s 14th season. Looking fit after heart surgery, she received taped greetings from celebs including Elton John and Justin Bieber, plus a big hug from a first-time View guest: David Letterman.

Letterman loves to talk about his decade-old quintuple bypass operation, and was delighted that Walters was willing to reveal a bit of her post-op scar. He talked medical specifics — “Did you love the morphine? Wasn’t that fantastic?” — but Walters wanted to steer the conversation to late-night matters.

Asked whether he minded that Jon Stewart READ FULL STORY »

'Mad Men' review: Heavyweight fights

Mad Men went to the fights this week. In an episode set against the media backdrop of the second Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston bout, battle-lines were being drawn everywhere. Don fought with Peggy and her Samsonsonite ad team over what he thought were their unimaginative ideas. Peggy fought with Mark over having to stay late at work. In a turn that would have seemed ridiculous had writer Matthew Weiner not arranged it so beautifully, Don took a swing at Duck… and the drunk (Duck, not Don, though Don was inebriated, too) ended up READ FULL STORY »

'Rubicon' review update: Did you watch this week, or: Is that a bug in my owl or are you just glad to see me?

Categories: Dramas, Television, TV Review

Rubicon has aired a scant six episodes, but its prognosis is already as grim as the inside of one of those morose meeting rooms in which James Badge Dale’s Will sifts through intelligence data. This new AMC Sunday night show hasn’t been met with the critical hosannas that greeted the channel’s Mad Men, and I know a number of EW staffers who watched the first three episodes and gave up, saying it was “too slow” and “boring.” One person’s “boring” is another’s blissful serenity, of course, and as for me, I kinda love Rubicon‘s contemplative approach to discovering who’s trying to blow up the United States.

You’ve heard of Gleeks? I’m thinking of starting a Rubicon fan club, so that we could call ourselves Bleaks.

'Better Off Ted': Now you can see the last two episodes!

Two episodes of our beloved Better Off Ted have remained unaired since the NBA finals preempted them in June. This is one reason I’m not a big sports fan.

Well, now you can see these Teds — but not on ABC. There are three ways to watch the READ FULL STORY »

'Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the New York Jets' review: Ground and pound and cut

It’s been a lot of fun watching Hard Knocks this season. As someone who doesn’t follow football regularly, I’ve been drawn in by the startling intimacy of this inside look at the pre-season New York Jets. Last night’s edition, which followed the team onto the field for a READ FULL STORY »
