'Fringe' recap and review: William Bell sends Walter a message and 'The Box'

This week, Fringe was set in our universe, with the red-headed, swaggering, alternate-universe-Olivia using dyed blonde hair and a more sober mien to impersonate our Olivia. What a terrific episode it was, with a tremendously clever game-changer of an ending.

So, from the top: Pre-credits, we saw a family tied up, held captive while three intruders sought a box in the basement. Two of the guys doing the digging unearthed it, and couldn’t resist opening what they’d been hired to find and bring back to their employer. Bad idea: They went all stiff, their eyes turned READ FULL STORY »

'The Good Wife' season premiere review: New partners and bathroom sex

The new season of The Good Wife picked up right where last season left off: With Julianna Margulies’ Alicia torn between two guys: her husband, Peter (Chris Noth), beckoning her to join him at his side at a press conference, and Will (Josh Charles) phoning her to try and fan the flames of romance.

It was a nice little cliffhanger, but it was resolved with READ FULL STORY »

'Sharktopus': SyFy just unleashed a half-shark, half-octopus upon the world! Also Eric Roberts!

“You’ve just unleashed an eight-legged, man-eating shark on this world!” shouted a Navy official in Sharktopus, a new high in the SyFy channel’s low-budget arguments for the impending implosion of 21st-century culture.

Sharktopus did everything a Saturday-night junk TV-movie should: Within the first three minutes, we READ FULL STORY »

'Smallville' final-season premiere review: Lois Lane crucifed

Smallville began its final season Friday night with a quick resolution to last season’s cliffhanger before getting on to an hour stuffed with new revelations and juicy plot developments.

Clark, left stabbed with a blue-Kryptonite spike by Zod in the ninth-season finale, was READ FULL STORY »

'Fringe' season premiere review: 'She's our Olivia now'

Grace be unto you and peace, Fringe admirers, Cortexi-fans, and Frewbies; the third season of the great parallel-universe saga has finally made itself manifest. The episode entitled “Olivia” was both superb and surprising. After last season’s slam-bang, two-part “Over There” finale, I expected the producers to do one of two things: offer either another sinuous sensory overload to match that finale, or a let’s-build-our-base, Beginner’s Guide to Fringe catch-up episode.

Instead, we got something different: a READ FULL STORY »

'Outsourced' premiere review: Offensive, funny, or inoffensively unfunny?

Outsourced arrived on Thursday night attacked, in many cases without being seen, with accusations of (at best) poor taste or (at worst) racism. If you watched, you know it’s about a smiley American (Ben Rappaport) who moves to Mumbai to oversee the call center of a novelty company.

The comedy of culture clash is often dicey, but Outsourced was READ FULL STORY »

William Shatner and '$#*! My Dad Says' premiere review: Or, Denny Crane goes really senile

Through an unlikely combination of elements — a popular Twitter site; CBS trying to be “hip” about social networking; the chance to work with Will & Grace producers David Kohan and Matt Mutchnick; William Shatner wanting to try something new — $#*! My Dad Says boasts the new season’s most annoying title and the sight of a wasted resource in Shatner.

He plays Ed, a grumpy coot who complains about READ FULL STORY »

Joaquin Phoenix and David Letterman, round 2: Fresh put-ons, insults, and apologies

Joaquin Phoenix returned to  Late Show With David Letterman on Wednesday night for the first time since his February 2009 appearance. Last night, Letterman described Phoenix as “the dope in the beard” and “a side of beef in a suit.”

This time around, Phoenix was clean-shaven and trim in a sleek gray suit. “Whattaya got to say for yourself?” said Letterman in a mock-accusatory tone. Then he got down to it:

“Now, did I know READ FULL STORY »
