'Kate Plus 8' review: And you thought you saw the last of Gosselin on the Emmys...

Fresh from her triumphant appearance on last night’s Emmys, Kate Gosselin — wait, let me start over.

Fresh from her incredibly lucky phone call from Jimmy Fallon, tapping her to use her notoriety for some fleeting good, Kate Gosselin returned to TV last night with another Kate Plus 8 “special.” It was a trip to Manhattan, where Kate complained in front of her eight children for most of a full hour about the heat and the “smells.”

Since home life in Pennsylvania has become so fraught following Kate’s divorce from Jon, she and TLC use these specials to do various activities. On Monday, that meant an Amtrak ride into New York (“Is this how they save money, by turning off the air conditioning?” Kate complained in the train waiting room), and then taking an open-air tour bus ride (Kate complained it was “at least 102 degrees” as they zipped past St. Patrick’s Cathedral).

On to Chinatown, where Kate duly noted “the smell and the heat… related to ocean-ish items there.” This was shortly before the group piled in to a restaurant for the family’s first experience eating Dim Sum. It was rather charming when Kate admitted she thought they were going to a restaurant called “Dim Sum”; it was less charming when she started snapping at the kids because she had her by-now-standard, since-she-became-famous all-purpose excuse for losing her temper: “I have low blood sugar.” Trust me: Kate Gosselin never said she had low blood sugar in the early, happy seasons of Jon + Kate Plus 8.

Kate also used to understand the concept of “sensible shoes.” Now, no matter that she was engaged in activities that required her to walk all over New York City with her family, she teetered along in high heels and shorts as gawping citizens stopped to snap pictures. The result? During their Central Park visit, Kate said, “In the heat, I feel like I’m going to vomit.”

Before boarding a boat for the Statue of Liberty, one of the twins, Cara, had a bit of a meltdown herself, and said she didn’t want to pose for a family photo.

“I’m not standing in a picture,” Cara said. Kate snapped, “You are, or I’m leaving you here with people you don’t know.”

Oh well, what parent hasn’t lost his or her temper, right? It’s just that most parents aren’t given their own train cars to ride in, or the opportunity to “drive the boat,” as Kate did, capitalizing on her fame to invite herself up the ladder to man the controls, all the while complaining that her high heels made the ladder climb difficult.

At this point, it’s best to view the Kate Plus 8 shows as reality sitcoms. It’s the only way to process Kate’s moans about how, everywhere they go as tourists, “We become the tourist attraction.” In the Statue of Liberty gift shop: “Crowds inhibited us from doing what normal families do.”

As the clan disembarked, a smiling New Yorker asked Kate, “How you doin’?”

“Not good,” she said curtly.

Then back at home in Pennsylvania, safely in front of the show’s confessional-camera and presumably well air-conditioned, Kate proclaimed it all a “great life experience.”

I think I heard the sound of a spoon scraping gravel; I suspect it was nine-going-on-10 Cara, digging a tunnel beneath the foundation of the Gosselin home, making her escape.

Please stop covering this show and its star. Stop paying attention to her and maybe she will finally go away. Thank you.

    • Abby

      Agreed

      • LoveVioletFlame

Ditto. Only read the article because I thought it might mention more about the terrific opening number on the Emmys. I refuse to watch the video, or anything more about this whiny woman and her poor parenting.

    • Michael

Seriously, I never want to hear anything about Kate, Jon, or this show ever again. Please EW, don’t reinforce it! –And people, don’t say: “well you cared to click through and write a comment…” blah, blah… I’m writing this as a PSA, not as a complaint.

    • sam

I think Kate is wonderful. What about the 19 kids and growing and all the other kidd shows. that tots to tiara is horrible. what about all these kids on sitcoms and being rude and nasty to their elders. come on Kate is great.

      • Kat

Seriously? Do NOT compare 19 Kids and Counting to Kate. PLEASE. All of those children are sweet and helpful and the parents are patient and loving. They are a great example. As far as Tots to Tiaras I think the show is trying to bring to light how bad that crap is. Kate is just a nasty, bitter woman, who is whoring out her children for money.

      • Leslie

Please Kat – the kids on 19 kids and counting are sweet and helpful because they have been brainwashed – Kate’s kids are real kids!

      • Dani

I agree! 19 kids and counting is NOTHING like Kate plus 8. Michelle and Jim Bob inspire me to be a kind, patient and more loving mom to my 2 kids. I think that family is an example of how a family unit works together as one. They have stayed the same since the special first aired about their family years ago, and they will be the same tomorrow. Comparing them to Kate and her kids is like comparing apples to…well, a jet plane!

      • Dani

@ Leslie Those kids are not brainwashed! They are not perfect either. The fight, make messes, get into stuff they are not supposed to. They are very normal kids. However, they respect their parents. I think that is what makes them unique.

      • Alan

Sorry but i find 19 kids and counting to be creepy in a different way. Yes, the mom is very sweet in a Little House on the Prairie kind of way. But they are members of a Christian sect called the Quiverfulls who believe a woman’s ONLY purpose in life to be continually pregnant from puberty to menopause. It’s CREEPY. The long ankle-length skirts, young marriage, repeated rabbit-like birth levels. It’s kind of cult-y and disturbing.

      • Dani

Well, I know only one of her kids is married, and he was in his 20′s (I believe, but could be mistaken) when he did get married. Her daughters are not married yet, and at least one is 19. I appreciate that they do not force their particular views on me. They have said many times that this is their view, regarding the long skirts, no shorts for the boys, having lots-o-babies etc, that this is how THEY feel, but would never judge others for not having the same convictions. Even their cousin and her mother wear pants and stuff and they love her no differently than they do other family members. I may not agree with all their theology, but I personally do not feel like they are creepy. I remember an episode last season I think, where one of the girls said that they are free to dress how they want (within reason) but, they choose to dress in this ultra modest way. They also school their daughters and support their decisions to further their education and travel the world on mission trips.

      • lll

Snotty FICTIONAL children are not the same thing as a snotty real parent exploiting her children for personal fame.

      • Dani

I would also like to add, there are many religions and cultures around the world that do not believe in birth control. I respect everyone’s right to practice what they believe. I was under the impression that the Duggar’s were Baptist. I did look up Quiverfull’s, and it seems that they just do not believe in birth control and believe every child is a blessing from God. Again, they are entitled to their belief and lifestyle choice. The kids do not seem harmed by it. Kate’s children however, seem traumatized lol.
I also respect the fact that the Duggaar’s are not on welfare, have no debt and do their best to raise their children to be contributing and good members of society.
I admit that I watch little Kate, I was bored this morning and read the story because I enjoy keeping up on pop culture (ty EW). She seems like she is whoring out her children to make herself famous. That is so different than the 19 kids and counting family. So, I feel it is unfair to lump them into the same category as the Duggar’s.
Again, just my personal opinion. Everyone is entitled to their views on the shows.

      • Alan

I just think it’s hypocritical when people slam Kate for “whoring her kids” but say nothing about the Duggars, the Little People family, etc. Yes, Kate has a terrible attitude, but just because Momma Duggar is a meek, submissive Christian fundamentalist without Kate’s brash attitude doesn’t mean that she is not also “whoring her kids”. It’s just hypocritical. Either there are NO CHILDREN allowed on TV at all, or they are allowed. You can’t permit it for the Duggars because they are Christians who believe in obedient submissive women, but not allow it for Kate because she’s a bit of a beeyotch.

      • Dani

I don’t think it is hypocritical, I think the shows are just produced differently. I think they were about the same when they started, a docuseries about raising a large family. I think that the production for each of the shows have gone completely different ways. I don’t believe that these kids, any of them, should be on a reality show. But, I do think that Kate plus 8 has become less about the kids and all about Kate. I am indifferent to Kate, I have no feelings one way or another about her. That being said, I do not see the Duggar’s on Dancing with the Stars and in the tabloids and things like that. I just think that the families in these shows have chosen different paths. To each to their own. I just don’t think it is fair to lump them all into the same category. Again, just my opinion.

      • Alan

If other families like the Duggars were not interested in the fame and the money, then why would they still be on after several years? If all they wanted to do was show America what it’s like to have lots of kids, 1 season would be enough. But no, they are in it just as much for the fame and money as Kate is. People just don’t like Kate, because she has a bad attitude. But the Duggars are much more likeable because they are sweet and kind. But despite that difference, they BOTH have reality shows that feature intimate details of their children’s lives. You can’t pretend it’s different. It’s the SAME THING, the tone of the show is just different, but it’s the same thing.

      • Attootsie

I used to like her too until I got tired of her bashing Jon and she convinced everyone what a horrible person he was. I can’t wait to read his book! Have not read one of hers. Besides she has a ghost writter! They have to take trips to make them even a little bit interesting! But a few things have changed in the time they have been away, The little kids aren’t as cute as they were! Not babies anymore! The one thing that hasn’t change is both the older girls are still brats! She hasn’t fixed that problem in all the time she has had away from TLC. Of course she’s to busy getting extensions, spray Tans, teeth whitened and whatever else it takes to make her a sexy mother of eight! What mother of eight has the time and money to do this? She denied Jon his fair share of the money they had claiming she needed it to pay bills and no one feels bad for her when she is dressed to kill in designer clothes and heels everyday!

      • ccr1912

Kate is great ……….really?? I have nothing good to say about her! She is more into herself then she is into her own children! She does nothing but complain all the time and draw as much attention to herself as possiable!! That show isn’t about the children anymore its about what fam can do to a once normal person, turn them into what we know kate gosslin as today!!

    • Jay

Agreed. Please EW, stop writing articles about this fame-wh0re

    • HollyP

Well I have a solution. Every one that does not want to read about Kate, don’t read about her. Just b/c EW prints it does not mean you have to read it!

      • Brth

Are you for real? Educated people read everything. That is how they stay informed. They then give an opinion. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Now how smart do you think you look?

    • notbraindead

Are there still people out there dumb enough to still watch this not talent wench grovel and sell her kids for a bit of celebrity? Come on people. Turn this woman off so her kids can stand a chance of a decent life without being dragged around the country and used to make money for mommy.

      • carol

How did this get to be about the Duggers. This is about how unbelievable Kate is. For preaching about how she only feeds her kids “GOOD” food, and the way she threw the moose hot dog down and complained about it. What a snob and isnt what she claims to be. She needs to go away off t.v. and everything else. Let her kids try to have a normal life as they can even with a bitter mother about life.

    • Jennifer Harrison

This woman absolutly drives me crazy!! “GO AWAY”..you ugly witch you and put away those mommy breasts “YUK!!”

    • Anne

      agreed

  • SH

Oh, Ken! I do enjoy your take-downs of Kate. Let’s all pitch in and give Cara a bigger spoon to dig with.

    • Liz

Man I feel for Cara, she always seems like she is miserable, she also seems to parent the so called “little kids” more than Kate does. I just hope that Cara has grandparents or aunts or uncles or some other kind of parental type figure helping her deal with the life her mother is dragging her in to. I’ll give her a shovel to help her dig her way out.

      • Anne

I’ll drive to PA and HELP her dig.

      • Val

She did, until her mother alienated them all.

      • Kareen

Their mother made sure that they don’t have family left.
        Grandparents? NO
        Aunts and Uncles? NO
        Thanks Kate

  • FeE

I can’t comprehend why Kate feels the need to wear heels while walkin around in NYC with her children! What the heck was that about? I understand that bein a single mom is very stressful but she is never alone. She always has help so what’s her excuse for bein so mean to the kids? I feel like she is very uninterested in them n more into her hair, clothes n shoes. She doesn’t listen when they cry about something, she jus pretty much snaps n makes the shut up. She has the “I’m the boss so u have to do what I say” attitude n it’s so sad. She has completely changed since the beginning of this show n the only people that I feel sorry for is the kids… She has turned into an out of control diva n it’s so sad that her kids have to suffer in the process. She claims that she is so grateful to her fans but complains about them… Smdh! It’s time to pull the plug on this show… I kno that I won’t b watching it anymore. Well to b honest I stopped a long time ago but was jus curious to c how she is doing as a single mother of 8 n sadly she is not doing so well… It’s time to take the heels off n get down n dirty with ur kids. BOND WITH THEM BEFORE ITS 2 LATE!!!!!!!

    • Ann

I agree time for her to ditch the heels and her short shorts . Her SCREECHING DIVA attitude stinks. The twins are alread showing signs of not wanting to be near her in the show.. They are old enough now to be embarassed by her actions..No more watching the show for me…

    • BlackIrish4094

I work near Chinatown and the day she was around here filming, 90% of the people couldn’t give a crap. Tribeca is near here and there are “real” stars around so most people couldn’t care less. She is so full of herself though, I’m sure she can’t imagine anyone being indifferent to her.

    • carol

Those kids would be much better off with their dad Jon. Not a bitter witch like Kate. She is treatin her kids like she treated her ex-husband Jon. I am also a single mother of only 4 kids but I do it on my own without any help or donations from anyone. She needs to grow up and face reality!!! Before its too late for all the kids.

  • Sara

I don’t know which is more annoying – Kate or Lost fans. Its too close to call.

    • Anna

I think it’s Kate. Lost fans are the Trekkies of the new millennium, and as such, they have redeeming qualities.

      • BlackIrish4094

No, the Trek fans are much cooler than the Lost nerds but Kate and her fans are the worst.

  • Allie

fee learn how to spell. you try raising 8 kids. she’s doing a great job as a single mom and at least she knows what working is unlike that octomom or whatever. wht is it okay for angelina jolie to work in the entertaiment business but not kate? angelina jolie is away from her kids a lot but nobody complains. you people need to be more happy. the kids are happy and so cute! i don’t know which girl on the bus that was, but she said “i don’t care, it’s just too hot”. that was adorable!

    • Ann

Ummm, Allie, before you jump on people for their spelling you should check out how you are suppose to start a sentence.

    • D

Allie, maybe you shouldn’t start a grammar war when you obviously don’t know how to use the “Shift” button on your keyboard.

    • FeE

Sweetheart I’m a college grad. I CHOSE to type that way, it’s the Internet! Who actually types words out anymore??? It’s obvious u feel the same way bc u did THE SAME THING, Duhhhhh lol…

P.s. I’m entitled to my own opinion n if u don’t like it, DONT READ IT! plain n simple :-)

      • Jesse

You CHOOSE to type like an idiot? I don’t have a degree yet, but I still like to use proper spelling and grammar so that people will take the time to read what I have to say and take it seriously.

      • ¥

FeE “sweetheart “, almost everyone here “types words out ” but you. Your typing is an annoying, ignorant, juvenile eyesore.

      • Brth

If you are college educated; then you did not get your moneys worth. You should ask for a refund.

    • Anna

I may have a husband to come home to, and only four to raise kids instead of eight, but I still know lousy parenting when I see it. And Kate’s a lousy parent. If she was thinking about her children she never would have allowed the New York trip to take place in the heat, humidity and smog of July – which is, I believe, when filming actually took place. She would have waited for the more comfortable temperatures of the Labor Day, Memorial Day or Thanksgiving Day weekends. But hey, the show must go on – even if it comes at the expense of her children. Which brings us around to your Octomom and Angelina Jolie comparisins. Kate may know what it is to work, unlike Octomom, but unfortunately so do Kate’s children know what it is to work. If Kate wants a career in the entertainment industry, then good for her, have at it. But leave the kids out of it. No one rags on Angelina Jolie because, again, unlike Kate, she doesn’t sell her kids out to the highest bidder so they can be paraded around like circus show ponies. Your need to see “cute children” shouldn’t come at the expense of the physical and emotional well being of the Gosselin eight. People who want to see cute children should get their criminal background check done and volunteer a couple hours each week in the kindergarten of their local neighborhood school.

      • Kat

HAHA!!! Exactly, Anna! Thank you! :)

      • AJ

Actually, Angelina has sold photos of her kids to the highest bidder.

      • Kat

AJ, I think there is a pretty big difference between selling the first STILL photos that you have selected to a magazine and then donating the money to charity, and doing what Kate does REPEATEDLY. Parading them around like ponies is the perfect description. Except the ponies are probably treated better than her children are.

      • tennisfan

        Spot on as usual, Anna.

      • BlackIrish4094

Angelina is a crappy mother too just not as bad as Kate.

      • Susie

Not to defend Kate or anything, but when she was out working WITHOUT her kids around, you same people harped on her being away from them. Which is it?

      • Karen

I happened to see Kate last night on a show about herself. What amazed me was that she lost the Mommy aspect and said she loves to work. I think that sums everything up in a nutshell. She also said she loves her kids but she also loves the limelight and is now considering acting.

Do I consider her a good Mom? No.
Good Mom’s keep their family close due to the help she needs. No wonder her kids were devastated when the film crew left. They were the children’s friends.

Why doesn’t she sell the house? Try and make friends? Go back to nursing part time? Mend fences with her family? Tell the kids she’s proud of them?

The Octomom definitely has mental problems, and the Angelina/Brad are always with their children. They don’t make movies at the same time. I really shouldn’t say anyting about them, because I only see them as an actor and actress.

I think people would just like Kate to film while home with her children and not traveling. Her kids seem miserable, and they’re all in school now.

Just as the Roloffs are doing, stating that this will be their last season, so should Kate. She should have loads of money saved by now.

    • Jon Voight

Angelina Jolie was in show business from the time that she was a child. She was an Oscar winner before she was a parent. Her family came after she’d established herself and her career. Kate has used her children to chase fame, and that’s a HUGE difference. Jolie also pulls down 8 figures a film, which goes a little toward, y’know, caring for the children.

      • Val

I can’t stand Angelina Jolie… I think she’s just one big ball of walking mental issues, and I can’t wait until Shiloh is old enough to write her tell-all. But there is an incredibly huge difference between a person who is famous having children, and a person having children to be famous. Kate had her kids to get famous, and milks every second of their lives for as much money as she can, all the while complaining, belittling, mocking, and breaking he spirits of her children. Just take a look at poor little Mady and Cara, who are the same age as my niece, to see the future for he little kids. It breaks my heart.

  • susid

Would someone please put her out of her misery for good so we can have some peace for a change!

    • FromChicago

Blame all this on the cable stations that need “content” and are willing to find mediocre people like Kate and Bristol.

  • Sammie

Dear kate. You are annoying beyond belief.stop trying so hard because its almost to obvious & pleaseeee stop nagging and complaining about everything & if you insist on having this show please let it go back to being focused on your kids and not on you.15 min into the show i’m changing the channel.maybe its my low blood sugar ;p

    • FeE

Lol!!!!! I love this comment!!! But ur right, the name of the show should b changed to Kate n the Sidekicks bc that’s what it seems like, it’s all about her n her complaints n what SHE wants 2 do THEN her afterthought is the kids! An example of that on this episode was the “amusement park” situation. She made it clear that she didn’t wanna go 2 the kids! I would b hot 2 in the middle of hear wit 4 inch heels walkin around in ny!!!! Smdh! Lol

      • FeE

        *summer

      • C.

FeE your typing really does look idiotic, whether you deliberately chose to write that way or not.

      • Denny

FeE is a perfect example of a Kate fan – ignorant, immature and obnoxious.

      • BlackIrish4094

        I’m sorry, I don’t speak stupid.

    • FromChicago

Well, somebody is watching the show.

      • Marion

Someone will always watch – but, in TV land, it is the *number* of people who watch. Kate’s numbers are already dwindling if not crash diving. Beginning in Sept. she will have lots of competition – on her own channel! TLC is introducing us to Quintuplets AND the first US Hispanic Sextuplets in NYC. TLC isn’t paying these people the fortune that they are paying Kate. Businesswise if she can’t get her numbers up TLC will give Kate the boot.

  • UGH

Ya…Kate isn’t a single mom…she has like what three babysitters at all time…She climbs down from the boat to ask her babysitter “Did you get a picture?” Like really isn’t that what your supposed to do? your the mom! A normal family experience…really is that what you expect when you go into public now that you made your family public. and Kate normal families (especially of 8) do not go to every gift shop and get something….Can you say Monay monay monaaayyy lol its pathetic I am venting on this but ugh she is retarded and hypocritical

Anyways I digress :P Its not a life I want for my children thats for sure and I can refrain from wearing heals while running after my kids in NYC, I guess I am a little more pratical

    • Dani

LOL I am a mom of 2 kids, and I am NEVER in pictures..because I am the one taking them.

  • pz

Sammy you said it correctly. She is soooooooooooo annoying. Where does Kate get off treating people the way she does. She walks around like it’s her god given right to have what she wants. You should be handing out thank you cards to every person that wants your photo. Kate, what will you do when you have to go back to nursing?

  • jen

Hello mr empire state building! Why does she carry on with such crap. You can see the older kids are think she is a fool, maddie and cara, are over her. They will want to live with Jon when they are old enough to make their own mind up who they live with.

  • Debbie

I can’t stand the way Kate treats her children. I have stopped watching the show because her whining and complaining are so annoying. I raised my children without nannies…she has turned from a sweet stay-at-home mom to a spoiled diva who thinks the world owes it to her!

    • Debbie

P.S. Kate is probably the type of person who would wear high heels to Disneyland.

      • Mickey

Didn’t they go to Disney in one episode where Kate FREAKED OUT about the kids eating ice cream? Jon tried to calm her down, and she FREAKED OUT some more? I’ve never seen any evidence to dissuade me from the notion that Kate is a miserable, miserable person.

  • jim

it should be called ,eight.sorry you two

    • Andrea

I can’t believe this. It’s pure awesomeness. I’ve watched the train wreck that is Kate since the beginning with hate in my eyes for about three years now, and THIS sums up those kiddos. Eight, Sorry You Two. Perfection.

  • Rachel

Too be fair, everybody complains about the heat.

  • Julie

You should have mentioned that they filmed this “vacation” during the NYC heat advisory, the one where people were supposed to stay indoors if at all possible. Normal parents would have canceled the trip or kept them in air conditioning. Of course, that would have ruined the stupid TLC filming schedule. Free the 8!

  • Jean P. Rogan

Someone please get Ms. Gosselin a fashion co-ordinator. I’ve heard it said that people act the way they are dressed.

    • heej

get her into a mime outfit PRONTO
