Here's who'll win the Emmy for lead and supporting actress in a comedy. Unless you have a better idea.

These two races present different challenges to anyone trying to predict a winner. I think the lead actress category is wide open (in addition to my “possible upset” pick below, I wouldn’t count out Tina Fey). On the other hand, I’ll be shocked if my choice for supporting actress doesn’t win. Check these out.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy

Toni Collette (United States of Tara)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine)
Lea Michele (Glee)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

Who’ll win Edie Falco. Not many citizens watch Nurse Jackie, but Falco does a great job, and her Showtime neighbor with equally not-huge ratings Collette has won it, so Falco has a good chance.

Possible upset Amy Poehler. The episode she submitted, “Telethon,” showed how lovable and hilarious her Leslie Knope has become.

Shoulda been a contender Portia de Rossi (Better Off Ted)

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy

Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Jane Lynch (Glee)
Holland Taylor, (Two and a Half Men)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)

Who’ll win Jane Lynch. The best performer in Glee deserves it.

Possible upset Julie Bowen. I’d love to see Bowen win it, especially for the episode she submitted: Her disastrous Valentine’s Day date with her husband, Phil.

Shoulda been contenders Kaitlin Olson (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Vanessa L. Williams (Ugly Betty)

So: Who do you think will or should win in these categories?

Holland Taylor….just ‘cuz I love her and immediately start laughing when she appears. From “Bosom Buddies,” to everything else she does, she’s pure GOLD. Besides, she can make a fun speech

    • t.t

Sophia Vergara should win she’s the best damn thing to happen to comedy since Married with Seinfeld

      • Amy

I love her too, but she made a serious misstep when selecting her submission. It’s nowhere near as strong as Lynch/Bowen’s. Maybe next year.

    • Dan

Holland won an Emmy for supporting actress in a drama several years ago (one of those legal shows) and she has lots of fans in the industry. I doubt she’ll win in this category, but you never know. If the Jane Lynch backlash (jealousy) is strong then its anybody’s Emmy to win.

      • Julie

You’re thinking of Camryn Manheim in The Practice, LOL

      • Troy

@Julie: Holland Taylor won a year or two (or few) after Manheim, the same year Michael Badalucco won as supporting actor for the show.

  • Michael

    Jane Lynch! Hands down…

and Lea Michele, because i don’t love anyone else in her category more than her.

    • L

      Someones a Gleek

    • Sal

NO one else? I’m a Gleek, but I adore Toni Collette.

      • paige

i dont mind if any of the Glee ladies win. I just dont want Edie Falco to win- she is absolutely NOT funny in Nurse Jackie- its more of a dramatic role… I love Toni Collette but she was better in the first season than in the second… would love to see Modern Family win everything Supporting and Best Comedy

      • veronica

I completely disagree – Edie Falco does serve up some amazing dramatic scenes in ‘Nurse Jackie’, but she’s often hilarious (and usually drily so) as well. (Love the banter between her and Dr. O’hara, too!) I agree with Ken, and hope that Edie Falco takes home the Emmy.

  • Ciara

If I had a choice I’d open up another slot and give the statue to Kaley Cuoco from Big Bang Theory.

I’d love to see Lea Michele win though with the episode she submitted (Sectionals) I doubt she has a chance-unless the voters are humongous Babs fans. (if she’d gone with the one where she did the Run Joey Run video it’d be hard to see how she’d lose!)

I hope Poehler wins it. Or Fey. I’m glad Collette won last year, but I really hate that Rosemarie DeWitt got snubbed AGAIN for her excellent portrayal-especially since her character had a bigger role this season! (it’s like my Jennifer Carpenter gripe from Dexter)

I really just cannot get into Nurse Jackie. I understand its appeal but it’s just not my cup of tea. Plus Falco has her Emmy-s. She’ll live without this one.

    • REASON

110% agree about the Cuoco comment

      • Javier

I’m not sure which season it was, but the episode where Sheldon drove Penny to the ER was classic! Parsons and Cuoco were at their best!

    • Cony

“Run Joey run” was so freaking funny, I don’t know why Lea pick “Sectionals”… maybe she choose to lose.

      • Amy

That whole episode was hilarious. Michele really demonstrated what an adept comic actress she was in that episode.

    • Erin

I agree with Ciara on the Rosemarie DeWitt snub being akin to Jennifer Carpenter.

As for Cuoco, nah. She’s good. But Ken is spot on regarding the majorly underappreciated snubbed Portia. She was freaking hilarious and deserves the statue let alone a nom for BoT.

  • Madd

I too wish Portia had been nominated. And thank you for your love of Kaitlin Olsen! The fact that It’s Always Sunny has never been nominated for anything is terrible.

    • llevinso

I know! I can’t believe Ken even mentioned It’s Always Sunny! It never gets mentioned on this website (which is ridiculous). And I totally agree about Portia. She should’ve been there as well.

    Julie Bowen>>>>>>>>>>>>>Jane Lynch

  • graeme

Julie Bowen is a major potential upset, and she would deserve it.

Would love to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus get a sendoff Emmy for the iconic character.

    • Smith

Old Christine is an iconic character?

    • Dan

Julia won after “New Christine’s” first season and she is well liked by the Academy. Could be a contender!

    • Mark

iconic? the show just got cancelled.

      • Jack

Freak & Geeks, My So-Called Life, Arrested Development… all iconic and all canceled.

      • Allie

Jo Posted on Well written. It’s hard to learn to shift from fear to cotiecnnng to one’s own power. I still dip my toe in the fear part too frequently. I’m smiling over turning the tables. My mother actually used to do that. She shared that trick with me when I was in college. lol I think it gave her the power she needed because she could never figure out any other way.

    • Lincoln

Old Christine is hardly iconic. That show does not deserve that much praise.

  • ER

Rooting for Amy Poehler… I guess she’s a long shot since Parks & Rec didn’t get any other nods, but in my opinion it was the funniest comedy on the air last year, and Poehler is a huge part of what makes it work so well!

    • jones

Agreed. That show went from being something I watched because it was on before other great shows to the best show of its grouping.

    • lauren

same!! amy deserves it. but so does half the cast particularly the guy who plans ron..can’t think of the actors name right now…

      • Cynthia

Agree with the Amy Poehler and Parks & Rec love!

    • Firdaus

Watched the show, hoping for a good one. But other than Katy Perry’s nmeforeapcrs, the show was very lame. No real deal funny material. The pubic hair hair grafts was kind of funny, but not as good as other commercial parodies. The new cast members were not really noticed or needed. Too bad Tina Fey and Fallon had only very brief cameos. All in all, just another unfunny & boring show except for Perry.

  • Sarah

Yes, Portia definitely should have been a contender! :(

    • Mothra

Portia! Portia! Portia! And if I can’t have her: Sofia! Sofia! Sofia!

  • llevinso

You know, I thought Jane Lynch was a lock until I saw what episode she submitted. I think it was a bad choice because it was definitely not her best. I wouldn’t be surprised now if someone else rightfully won it instead. Both Sofia and Julie would be fantastic winners as the episodes they submitted were golden! I don’t watch Parks & Rec so I can’t comment on Poehler but I hear she’s awesome in that part.

    • llevinso

And obviously for Poehler I’m talking about a different category, but the only show I watch for lead actress is 30 Rock. But I don’t think it’s Fey’s year.

      • Tom

The core of your writing lwhist sounding reasonable initially, did not really sit well with me after some time. Somewhere throughout the paragraphs you actually managed to make me a believer but just for a very short while. I however have got a problem with your leaps in assumptions and one would do nicely to fill in all those breaks. If you can accomplish that, I will undoubtedly end up being impressed.

    • Strepsi

Which episode did she submit? I’d have submitted the one where we think she’s abusing the cheerleader wannabe with Down’s syndrome, until we realize she is sincere and has a mentally challenged sister. That was awesome. Which one?

      • nick

        The Power of Madonna

      • LAJackie

The Madonna episode? Really? The worst of the season imo.

      • llevinso

I know right LAJackie? Horrible choice for a Sue submission! I thought she was a lock until I heard that.

And I’m actually rethinking about Fey too. She submitted her Dealbreakers episode which I think was a fantastic choice. It was semi-off year for 30 Rock but Fey was solid in that episode, so I’d say either Fey or Poehler.

      • Amy

I hated The Power of Madonna, but I rewatched it the other day and it really is Sue’s episode. I didn’t remember her having such a presence in it, but I would wager that she has more screentime in it than any other Glee episode and I think that’s probably why she submitted it.

    • Lincoln

llevinso, I’m with you 1,000%. Lynch chose a very shaky episode. She should have picked an earlier one.

  • Brett

Interestingly for a comedy category, only one of the lead actress nominees is actually funny, and that’s Amy Poehler. As for the supporting actress category, it’ll probably be Lynch, though I’d prefer to see Sofia Vergara.

  • j

Glad you mentioned Vanessa L. Williams since Sue Sylvester is Wilhemnia in high school. I do not see how Janye Lynch can win if Vanessa Williams never did.

    • paige

100% agree. I think its a sin that VLW got snubbed this year!

  • JN

    Lead = Edie Falco
Supporting = Jane Lynch. Holland Taylor’s spot shoulld have gone to one of the suppoting gals from Nurse Jackie: Eve Best, Merritt Weaver, or Anna Deavere Smith.

    • JN

      typos, sorry

    • veronica

JN, thank you for mentioning these folks, especially the brilliant Merritt Weaver – that girl is hi-larious in ‘Nurse Jackie’, and she brings her own twist to the character and little surprises to her portrayal every episode. I hope she gets some Emmy love at some point…

    Falco & Bowen.

  • Sean S.

If Lynch can’t win it, I truly would love to see Vergara take it. Her comedic timing on Modern Family is some of the best I have ever seen. The only good thing about Portia not being nominated is that then this race would have been almost unbearable to call a winner for.

    • tzanel

It’s odd how this show is just so consistently etrrible. The percentage of sketches that fall absolutely flat, it’s inexcusable. They hire kids out of Harvard who worked at the Lampoon like all the others before them, and 90% of those people have no talent. Some are charming, brilliant and charismatic, but don’t have talent. This Jay Pharoah kid, he’s going to be one of the most famous people in America, but it’s like pulling teeth for SNL to actually hire someone like him. They go to 2nd City improv kids who can improv, but not write a sketch to save their lives. Writers on that show are not as responsible as the cast members.

  • Jack

Rooting for Lea, but I do hope Amy takes it.
