'Hot in Cleveland': I can feel your interest in this show evaporating

Just as I suspected: You talk a good game, but where’s your loyalty? For all the “LOOOOVVE Betty White!!!” huzzahs on this site’s Comments section every time there’s a White post, how many of you actually watched the third episode of Hot in Cleveland last night?

Not that I blame you; loyalty only goes so far when your favorite is encased in a mediocre vehicle. The episode was all about four blind dates the four stars had. White was paired off with guest star Carl Reiner, and once again, it was the old pros who perked up the tired punchlines.

The rest of the half-hour wasn’t a complete waste of time. There was a good Helen Mirren joke, and Friday Night Lights‘ D.W. Moffett (the magnificently smirky Joe McCoy) appeared as Wendie Malick’s date. (The bad news: he had a one-joke role as a guy with man-boobs. Named Chester. Yes, they wrenched a joke out of that.)

But Hot in Cleveland has settled in as a pretty ordinary sitcom, and all the charms of Betty White (and Malick’s superbly dry line deliveries) are not going to lift it much higher than that. I hope its taping schedule doesn’t prevent White from doing something better, soon.

Next week’s guest: Huey Lewis!

Tell the truth: Did you watch Hot in Cleveland this week? Is there any reason why a Betty White fan should continue to watch?

Yep, watched it, and thought this was the best ep yet.

    • Brian

Check out the cans on Chester.

    • Jay

I did too, for what it’s worth. The best episode of a mediocre show.

    • Dash

I agree….have watched all three episodes and really liked last nights the best

    • Ray

YES, I watched it & thought it was funny.

    • Liz

Want to say it’s great, but I can’t. The writing is sophomoric and doesn’t play to the cast’s many talents. Try more generational angst and less Hollywood “kitsch”. Carl Reiner works well with Betty. Write him into the plot.

It’s on my DVR. I’m not sure whether to watch or delete to make room for “Adam’s Rib” on TCM.

Well, just writing that made up my mind for me.

    • Zach

I’m pretty sure I laughed out loud more times last night than I ever did watching the dated Adam’s Rib.

are you kidding? nothing tops hepburn and tracy!!

Actually my DVR said it was going to be a repeat…I guess I better check it again :(
I DO like it so there!

    • elr

Well the good thing is that since it is on TVLand it is constantly being rebroadcast. I recorded it but I haven’t been able to watch it yet.

I think this show doesn’t set out to be anything other than a simple good feel time between the viewers and the cast. they know they are not breaking new ground or being corny like Big bang theory or Modern family. It caters to 25-55 crowd and it works for that format.
You seem not to understand its purpose and want to see it more than it is: just a wonderful experience away from the monotonous on TV currently.

“they are not … being corny like Big bang theory or Modern family.” It’s a decent show but I think you got that backwards.

      • che

Nah he/she got it right. Modern Family is very guilty of that.

    • WI

Well said – I am enjoying this show. It doesn’t break new ground but I did find myself laughing out loud often during the show. Sometimes that is all you need.

  • Cleveland Love

Yes I watched and liked it, it is not a bad show and the ladies all are funny, I think it fits in perfect with the rest of the lineup being old staple sitcoms, I even love where they go “Hot in Cleveland was filmed before a live audience” how back in the day is that ok.

    • AKB inVA

Agreed! I was hoping that Melanie’s date would be played by Boyd Gaines. I hope they stick with it.

  • Jake

It’s not the best show in the world, but it was the best episode yet. I laughed out loud quite a bit.

    • Jay

I did too, but we’re already nearing the double digits of Jane Leeves making jokes about how she loves being treated like a piece of meat after three episodes.

  • jrs

Very middling sitcom…lazy writing. I finally turned it off to catch up on my TIVO and watch Louie that premiered the night before. Now, THAT’S a funnnnnny show!!!! Where’s the love for it on EW?

  • hey

I don’t understand why you’re bashing this show. It’s a sitcom, not high art. Why don’t you write a nasty recap after every episode of over AWFUL sitcom CBS pukes onto the air?

  • amj

I watched it and still like it! Mr. Tucker, I am beginning to think you just don’t really like watching television. Seems that all the reviews for everything you watch you don’t seem to like. Betty White was hysterical as were the rest of the ladies and good for all of them for rejuvenating their careers! Who isn’t excited to see these ladies back on television?

  • Amber

i watched it and loved it. iv got my dvr set to season pass. and when it comes out on dvd ill buy that too. its got a great cast and the writing my be a bit off at times but i still love it and its got nowhere to go but up.

  • BillyD

I think this show is funny. Sure, it’s not deep or really meaningful, but I like the entire cast. I don’t think it’s trying to be anything more than a fun half-hour. And even with the sometimes cliched sitcom jokes, I laugh. If Two & a Half Men can run for umpteen years, then “Hot” should run forever.

  • Dan

I have to say…that I have been watching it! It just takes time for any show to find it’s audience. I HATE when networks cancel shows without giving them a try. I think this show is funny! If you know, all the shows premiers with solid numbers and then they decline in time, it’s nothing new. I hope that this show does not get cancelled. :)

  • Kim

I watched last night and thought it wasn’t as funny as last week, but it was still a good time. Summer is a good season to air it when folks generally go for fluffier stuff, and I still think all four actresses are delivering well. (Obviously especially Betty White)

Have to have some help It may sound strnage but I’d like to find someone who’d be qualified to help me out manscaping. Will be reply every day, so you must be available every day. dating black Bellefontaine Mississippi MS . teen girls

  • Brian

I love the show precisely because it’s being exactly what it is: an old-fashioned formulaic sitcom. I gre up on them, and there’s something about this one that’s as great as watching Roseanne or Cosby Show re-runs. My interest is solidifying, not evaporating.

  • ml

I watch the show last night. It is about the four women are looking for a blind date. It is cute! I love Betty White! She look cute! Betty, Wendie M., and Jane L. are so funny. I will watch it again next week. Hope ‘Hot In Cleveland’ will still continue through the summer and some more. It is better than watching NBC’s 30 Rock with Tina Fey.

    • Brian

      I wouldn’t go *that* far.

      • WI

        me neither….

    • che

I was agreeing until that last sentence. It’s kind of ironic that the premise of Hot in Cleveland is taken entirely from a 30 Rock episode.
