'Work of Art' premiere review: Not just 'Project Runway' with paint?

You’d think we were overdue for a reality-TV show about the art world. Watching people create art, must be fascinating, right? Or have we just been lulled into thinking that after seeing Hans Namuth’s hypnotic films of Jackson Pollock at work?

Bravo stepped into that void — if indeed it exists — last night, offering us Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. When it comes to splattering emotions like, Work of Art is like Top Chef in an exploding kitchen: controlled chaos. To be sure, each of 14 contestants arrived labeled – for example, there was Abdi, the “figurative artist”; Nao, the “performance artist”; Jaime Lynn the “illustrator”; and Erik, who gave us a clown painting that would be shoddy even by the standards of John Wayne Gacy. The egos roamed free: Jaclyn, a former READ FULL STORY »

Last night, Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Fallon tried to 'end the late-night wars'

Two nights ago, Craig Ferguson put on a big white Mickey Mouse hand and started musing about how “if everyone wore a Mickey Mouse hand for one night” maybe it could “end the late night war madness.” Ferguson added, “I’m reachin’ out to you, direct-competitor Jimmy Fallon. Craig’s impassioned plea READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' and its baby issue: Did Mrs. Corcoran really deserve Beth?

For the most part, I thought Glee finished up its first season the way Glee would: With performances so good, they prevented the gag-reflex I have at Journey songs and pomp-rock such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It’s all about balance: I’ll forgive the use of the ukulele for the astute use of “To Sir With Love.”

One development sticks in my craw, however. Shelby Corcoran ends up with Beth? After READ FULL STORY »

'Justified' season finale review: Did 'Bulletville' hit all its targets?

Justified finished out its first season in a way that tied up loose ends, gave us at least one action sequence that could be taught in film schools, and set up a few story lines for next season that should leave anyone who developed a hankering for this show yearning for more, now.

The episode, entitled “Bulletville” (any chance that was a little homage to “Poisonville” in Dashiell Hammett’s  Red Harvest?), found the Crowder family at odds with each other. Having blown up READ FULL STORY »

'Glee,' finishing weakly?: Three things the show should fix next season

Glee closed out its first season last night, and it must be pointed out that, while the series remains one of the most original concepts in prime-time, Glee has also become, I’m sorry to say, a bit strained, a tad self-congratulatory. Worse, it has a woman problem. Here are three things Glee has to do to READ FULL STORY »

Lee DeWyze on 'Letterman': Refuses to concede that Simon is 'a psycho'

Lee DeWyze ambled onto The Late Show with David Letterman last night, and you knew Dave was going to like this year’s American Idol winner more than he does most Idol contestants, because DeWyze READ FULL STORY »

'The Hard Times of RJ Berger' review: Where are Beavis and Butthead when we need them?

The Hard Times of RJ Berger, relentlessly promoted during last night’s MTV Movie Awards as only MTV knows how to do (that’s pretty much a compliment), is the channel’s latest attempt at a scripted sitcom, as opposed to its reality sitcoms such as Jersey Shore and Super Sweet 16. There’s a difference, though: Where those shows take freak characters and READ FULL STORY »

Two hours of 'Kate Plus 8': I watched them so you didn't have to

The two back-to-back editions of the new specials Kate Plus Eight could have used a combo-title: The Horror, The Horror.

In the first, which TLC called “6th Birthday Surprise,” the Jon-less Kate Gosselin took her eight kids to READ FULL STORY »
