'Rescue Me' season premiere review: Dead, drunk, and dreaming

Dead or drunk: These seemed to be the primary ways we were meant to see Denis Leary’s Tommy Gavin in the new, sixth season of Rescue Me that premiered last night.

Dead: That’s how he started out, in a pre-credit sequence that followed up on last season’s Tommy-gets-shot cliffhanger. In Tommy’s unconscious vision, he’s READ FULL STORY »

'Huge' premiere review: Is this a big improvement in overweight TV?

Raised to a higher standard than your usual ABC Family series on the strength of its performances and writing, Huge took a tricky, even controversial, premise and made a clever hour of it. Just when you thought pop culture had fallen in line with the socially-correct stance toward obesity — roughly speaking, that would be “Shed the pounds or be the Biggest Loser!” — along comes Huge to suggest that the so-called “fat acceptance” movement makes a good point.

Huge has a great READ FULL STORY »

'Entourage' season premiere review: Enjoyably desperate?

Entourage commenced its seventh season with many of its characters’ careers in high gear. Adrian Grenier’s Vince was challenged to do a dangerous movie stunt; Jeremy Piven’s Ari Gold was multi-tasking multi-problems; Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) had to keep corralling the dumb bunnies he’d hired for a business venture, a pretty-girl-driver service. (There’s about as much point in criticizing Entourage for blithe sexism as there is in accusing a Jason Statham movie of being nonchalantly violent — it’s what they do; you don’t watch if you don’t like.)

There’s a symbiotic relationship between Vince and Ari subplots. Vince is such a passive guy, he needs to be surrounded by READ FULL STORY »

'True Blood' recap: 'It Hurts Me Too' and the arrival of Alcide

Blam! The shot Sookie fired at the end of last week’s True Blood, at the werewolf? Eric dove for it at the start of this week’s episode and intercepted it… and then killed the werewolf himself. (Eric to Sookie, mouth dripping: “I got your rug all wet.”) Other   READ FULL STORY »

'Dinocroc Vs. Supergator' review: Dino-mite, croc-tastic!

Dinocroc Vs. Supergator was impeccable Saturday-night junk entertainment. The Syfy network has really tapped into a solid niche audience for cheesy, new, low-budget sci-fi-horror movies, and this one, produced by the legendary Roger Corman and featuring the late David Carradine, was READ FULL STORY »

'Friday Night Lights' recap: 'The Toilet Bowl' provides relief

Friday Night Lights has now reached the point where its new characters have earned equal footing with fan favorites such as Tim Riggins and Landry. And it’s about time, since we’re more than half-way through the season.

This week’s episode began, however, with two of the show’s most familiar and welcome faces. FNL took us on a college road trip with READ FULL STORY »

'Boston Med' premiere review: It was no 'Grey's Anatomy,' and thank goodness for that

Boston Med, which began an eight-week run Thursday night, is the right antidote to goofy-bad summer TV like Wipeout, Scoundrels, Rookie Blue — basically everything else ABC and the other networks is airing during the steamy months. The series follows life and death, bravery and foolishness, in three Boston hospitals: Massachusetts General, Children’s Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Yes, it’s a documentary; yes, it sometimes played like soap opera, but a first-class soap opera, none of this maudlin yet over-the-top Grey’s Anatomy stuff.

This night, we met people like READ FULL STORY »
