'Fringe' recap: 'Over There, Part 1' is one great half of a fantastic finale

The first half of the two-part Fringe season finale, “Over There,” hurtled us over there — to the alternate universe, where Peter was following his true father, and where alternative versions of Olivia, Broyles, and even Astrid existed in cleverly different versions of the ones we know.

Over there, Olivia is an auburn-haired, wisecracking, jack-booted member of a Fringe Division that’s overseen by READ FULL STORY »

'Lost' non-mythology review: Sorry, but last night was a stinker

There have been a lot of excellent episodes of Lost during this final season. Last night’s wasn’t one of them. The stilted speeches that the show deemed necessary to convey the gravity of the episode’s situations could not READ FULL STORY »

'The Good Wife' recap: Alicia vs. Cary: We have a winner!

The Good Wife had a fascinating legal case about a rock star who went into a coma after… oh, come on: What we really cared about last night was, who was going to be named to the junior associate position, Julianna Margulies’ Alicia or Matt Czuchry’s Cary? That, and what was Vernon Jordan READ FULL STORY »

A new, longer look at the 'Fringe' season finale!

Take a verrrry close look at this brand-new, extended Fringe season-finale trailer.

You’ll see that Josh Jackson’s Peter Bishop gets “taken to the other side” (ah, that would actually be his true home, wouldn’t it?). You’ll see alternate-universe versions of READ FULL STORY »

'Chuck versus The Tooth' recap: More reasons why 'Chuck' deserves renewal

It’s funny how life doesn’t exactly imitate art — er, TV — but sometimes echoes it. No sooner does my colleague Michael Ausiello report that shaky-ratings-plagued Chuck seems on the verge of renewal than the series airs a rich episode about a shakily emotional Chuck that gave us renewed reasons for why READ FULL STORY »

'Treme' review: Guest stars and 'Shame, Shame, Shame'

Lots happened on Treme last night. Lots happens every week on Treme — the series’ carefully modulated rhythms, meant to echo that of the music that engulfs the show, can often lull you into thinking the drama is meandering when in fact it’s coursing along with vigor.

Guest stars and cameos were notable for being a cut above the usual oh-look-there’s-a-famous-face. Tim Reid played a tough but fair-minded judge. Reid, best known as Venus Flytrap on WKRP in Cincinnati, was the co-creator (with Hugh Wilson) of READ FULL STORY »

'Breaking Bad' recap: Peekaboo, 'I See You'... pow!

After last week’s stunning attack on Hank by the relentless cousins, it made dramatic sense for Breaking Bad to pull back a bit this week, to do one of the things it does best: let us see the aftermath of how ordinary people react when put in extraordinary circumstances.

This is, of course, the entire premise of the series — Walter White never set out to become an outlaw meth manufacturer. But it’s easy for a successful TV series to lose sight of its original premise, something Bad creator Vince Gilligan never has.

Thus we began in the hospital. Jesse is being released after READ FULL STORY »

Betty White's 'Saturday Night Live': The 'Debbie Downer' sketch you didn't see

There’s only so much time when you’re having fun, so this “Debbie Downer” sketch was cut from Saturday Night Live last night for time. Check it out:

Poor Rachel Dratch; she can’t catch a break, can she? What do you think of the sketch? I like Betty White’s late-in-the-proceedings appearance warning about gluten allergies…

'Saturday Night Live' recap: Betty White was funny, vulgar, and totally charming

The cheers and applause that Betty White received during the Saturday Night Live cold-open sketch told you everything you needed to know about the momentum White had going into this week. The sketch was one of SNL‘s fine Lawrence Welk parodies, and White had only a small part in it, but that didn’t matter: After months of grassroots campaigning, White’s appearance was its own reward: The audience was applauding as much for itself and its pop-culture populist power as it was for White herself.

Not that she wasn’t terrific. White nailed the opening monologue, rattling off I’m-so-old jokes with crack timing, exulting in READ FULL STORY »
