'The Good Wife' season finale recap: 'Running'

It was couples-night on the season finale of The Good Wife: Not just Alicia and Peter and Alicia and Will, but also Will and law-student Giada, Diane and Gary Cole’s McVeigh, Kalinda and FBI agent Lana, and even Eli Gold and Peter’s mother, who proved to be two peas in a pod, give or take a little veiled antisemitism. How did you react to the Alicia-Will-Peter cliffhanger?

Me, I thought it was just dandy. I don’t mind being teased into next season, not after all the rich conversation we were given leading up to the hour’s final moments. Will had a few gulps of wine to give him the courage to call Alicia at the very moment she was to go onstage and play the Good Wife beside newly-announced States Attorney candidate Peter Florrick. That call yielded Alicia-style eloquence that was thoroughly believable, even under her stressed circumstance.

“Show me the plan,” she said bluntly. Will was caught off-guard. A romantic single guy, he was hoping the allure of sweet talk and nostalgia for What Never Was But Might Still Be would prove sufficient to persuade Alicia to come a-runnin’. But Alicia has learned: “Poetry is easy; it’s the parent-teacher conferences that are hard.” In other words, put up or shut up, buddy; I’m in the midst of a life here, and I’m open to suggestions, but you’ve got to be serious with me. This is the kind of thing that lifts The Good Wife into another level of domestic drama; you just don’t see adults grappling with such a familiar nighttime-soap topic with the sort of terse realism that somehow makes the entire scenario seem even more romantic.

Well, let’s get down to business. You don’t book Amy Acker for a guest spot and not expect her to prove to be significant to the plot. Sure enough, the former Dollhouse/Angel co-star played the wife of a cop, clients of Lockhart, Gardner. Her husband was killed while in the process of exposing police corruption. The case managed to get Kalinda to do some investigative work with the FBI agent, leggy Lana, and their investigations included examining each other’s eyes closely, in an amorous manner. When episode director James Whitemore, Jr., and a Good Wife camera shot contrived to hide what we presumed was a kiss between them, the coyness was punctuated by a very funny-in-context line from Will, who called Kalinda soon after and said, “You sound like you’ve been running.”

Did I think The Good Wife would wait until next season before having Cary, who only last week joined the States Attorney’s office, go toe-to-toe with Alicia? Foolishly, I did. Happily, the producers plunged right in, with a crackling deposition scene in which Matt Czuchry was so intelligently oily, I thought for a moment Logan Huntzberger had reinhabited his body and he was looking around for a Rory Gilmore to seduce.

And the characters just kept on coming. Squeezing Gary Cole’s gun expert McVeigh back in to provide antagonistic testimony only to be met with equal antagonism by Diane ended up turning the pair on. Having Alicia’s mother-in-law Jackie pay a visit to Pastor Isaiah and tell him to back off from her son with all this God-talk was hard to beat… and then it was beaten, by the scene between Jackie and Eli (“Mr. Golden, is it?”), in which the two sparring partners (the WASP-ish matriarch, the Jewish wiseguy) realized they had to unite to get Peter to announce his candidacy quickly.

But in all this, let’s not short-change the stars. Chris Noth moved through the episode like a sleek shark. It may have looked as though his conscience was making him waver, but his killer smile and his killer instincts made sure he kept moving toward his political goal. Still, his Peter also mingled ambition with sincerity when he told Alicia, “I want to be a great [state's attorney] and I can’t be without you.”

And Julianna Margulies’ Alicia was pulled in every direction while maintaining her mask of composure (except when sharing beer and pizza with Will — who could not giggle at the charms of pizza and Will? ). The Good Wife reminded us of Alicia’s high standards when she was repelled by the outcome of the legal case: client Amy Acker proved to be a villain, but still walked away with a half-mill settlement, thanks to Will and Diane. “At what point is our job wrong?” Alicia asked them, and yet the character never comes off as priggish or naive.

And for viewers, the bigger, unstated dramatic question — “At what point is our flirting wrong?” — remained the rapidly-beating heart of The Good Wife. Our hearts will be with it until the show returns next season.

What did you think of the finale?

Gripping the entire hour and just excellent, as I’ve come to expect from this show.

    • Skipper

Agreed. I love that the cases each week are as gripping as the personal relationships of the characters. It’s the only show that has the right balance of legal drama and soap.

  • Jackie

I disagree about the cliffhanger. I mean, yeah, it makes for good television, but my need to know outweighs my better judgement when it comes to good television :) I think my exact reaction when the fade-to-black came before we could see what Alicia would do was “That is so wrong!”

    **********************************

Also, FYI, Amy Acker was never on “Firefly”. I really didn’t think so when I read that because I’ve seen every episode of “Firefly” multiple times (I double checked her IMDb page just to be sure). I think Ken meant “Sure enough, the former Dollhouse/ANGEL co-star…”

    • Ken Tucker

I did indeed mean Angel; you’re right; thanks. Fixed.

      • Maggie

Any Acker is also married to James Carpinello, the guy who’s been playing skeezy cop attracted to Kalinda for a few weeks.

      • Johannah

That’s not even 10 mniteus well spent!

  • tellusataletunes

Ken: While Amy Acker was on Dollhouse, she was not on Firefly. I think you meant to type Angel.

    • Lorraine

Stay infomatrive, San Diego, yeah boy!

  • Andy

I’m so fascinated by how this show has evolved. At the beginning of the season, I was all, “Go! Run to Will!” But in the very last scene, I completely understood what Alicia was saying about a plan, being married, etc. In fact, I was kind of rooting for her to stay with Peter, because it really was the logical thing to do. I love this show so much.

    • Kathy

If she doesn’t go on that stage with Peter in the first minute of next season’s opener, I swear I will stop watching!!!!!!!! Not really, because I love this show, but Will just peeves me. He doesn’t really have a clue about Alicia’s life and what she has to deal with. Peter is making amends, trying hard and Will just thinks running to him should be obvious. It’s not…Alicia: get on that stage with your husband!!

  • Alexis

I think they goofed with the name of the show. I can’t imagine her “wife” role ending in the short term.

  • Ciara

I love this tv show. It is by far the most well-written character/law drama I’ve seen in…perhaps ever? There’s not a single character who falls flat or actor miscast (well perhaps Will, imo, but that’s only because I personally don’t get his sex appeal esp when put against Chris Noth. Still he delivers the lines fine.)

I love Kalinda and I love that’s she’s such a mystery. I’m so glad the writers aren’t taking the ‘kalinda’s episode to explain why she is like she is’ route and instead just offering us little gems every episode that keep building into this complex, intriguing character. I also love the ‘ambiguity’ of the scene with her and the FBI agent. I’m 99.999% certain what happened but the writers don’t feel like showing us on screen what occurred so we’re still left with that nagging doubt. Also I’m shocked that the stunning, young, leggy FBI agent doesn’t annoy me as just a dumb pretty girl. The actress’ beauty, in that role, is an obstacle which she overcomes. She held her own in the conference room with the best of the cast.

And yeah, I love the mother as well. I love that she’s this prissy WASP who has such a brilliant look of superiority that I keep expecting her to knife Eli/the preacher!

And finally, Julianna Marguileis totally deserves the Emmy. And the actress playing Kalinda should get a supporting actress nod, at least in my world.

    • Bad Girlfriend

Clara, I get your point about the Will vs. Peter conundrum. Here’s my take: Peter is viscerally sexy; Will is cerebrally sexy.
I love the way the writers allow us to discover the characters bit by bit. To me, this final episode was the one that finally revealed Peter’s mother, chillingly, as the Power Behind The Throne. (Among many other interesting developments of course!)

      • Alia

Hmm. My personal reaction is the opposite: How does Chris Noth’s Peter stand a chance against Josh Charles’s Will?

      • anna nymous

Totally agreed. Who knew Jen’s grandma from Dawson’s Creek can play a cold, villainous grandma who seems more hungry for power than her son, the dethroned state’s attorney?

      • Yoga_Girl

I’ve been a fan of Josh Charles since his role as Knox Overstreet (great fictional name :) in Dead Poets Society. His characters who feel like real people… not just some persona. The cast is perfect.

      • Kathy

No, Peter is just plain ALL sexy! Will always seems sort of weasle-like to me.

    • AJ

      Agree completelly, Ciara.

And I don’t “get” Will’s sex appeal either. grins.

  • kate kennedy

Love love love this show. Loved the scene with Eli and Jackie, loved seeing Kalinda reveal a little more about herself. Still wondering what her history is with Peter and how that will play out.Giada is an interesting character,it will be interesting to see her play out next season. Will and Alicia will not get together soon, Eli just brought all that business to the firm, which they need–but I hope I am wrong. Thank you Good Wife writers for such a great season.

  • Lorie

I was hoping Alicia would run to Will, so I was caught off-guard when she said to him “Show me the plan.” A few seconds later, I couldn’t help but think that she was right to say this. Will apparently got caught-off guard, too. His expression made me chuckle.

Great season finale! Can’t wait for September.

Several folks, including the writers, better get some Emmys this fall.

    • Catrina

Hey everyone!I loved the cliffhanger! I hope she picks Will.because Peter is only remorseful because he got caught! I wonder if he didn’t would he still be cheating? My answer is YES!!!! So go Will!

      • Mary

        So true…..Go Will!!

      • Donna

I think she should be with Will. Her husband is going right back into politics even though his marriage is on very shakey ground. After what he put her through how could she forgive him knowing he just wants her to be by her side to get elected. I think she has nothing to lose giving Will a chance who just wants her.

  • Dion

Kalinda. Kalinda. Kalinda. She has so much going on with that quiet tone, those dark, deep eyes and that sexy swagger. She’s got her hands in everything and yet comes out clean. Or will she? No one mentioned that she gave up the wife’s name to the “bad” cop. Wonder if this will come back to haunt her. This is my favorite show on TV. Can’t wait to see what unfolds next season.

    • mindys

I agreed. I’m still so worried that Kalinda will get into trouble on giving up the name. I so don’t want anything to happen to her.

  • Beth

Amazing! From the minute it started, my heart was pumping. The ending almost drove me crazy.

  • Gail Wright

Love Love this show!!!!!I need to rewatch it. Was Kalinda’s cop – dirty or clean????

    • Jane

He was clean, the only dirty cop was the one who bought the case to them. I’m also putting my two sense in for team Will. The only time Alicia seems happy is when she’s relaxing with him and Peter is too busy looking out for number 1.

      • PatrickKelley

Well, if they’re all clean, how did the cop’s wife get away with a 200,000 dollar settlement. He died in the line of duty, so I can see her getting an insurance settlement, but a wrongful death settlement? I don’t get it, and furthermore, the lawyers had every right to terminate the lawsuit. They should have fired her as a client. The way it is now, they are complicit in her conspiracy. While attorney-client privilege precludes them from turning her in, they are under no obligation to go along with such a charade, which is just digging a deeper hole. The most they are obligated to advise her is, withdraw the settlement, or continue and leave the courts to wonder why we fired you as a client.

      • JenR

Patrick, the politician running for re-election didn’t want the case to go public, so they settled even though the cops were innocent and the law firm is in dire financial shape so they need the money. Not saying it’s right, because it obviously isn’t, but it makes sense that this is how things went.

      • Caroline

Shoot, so that’s that one suoppess.

      • Ving

Woot, I will cretanily put this to good use!

  • Trenton

Kalinda is pure and at the same time utterly dirty sex appeal. She has this quiet innocence about her in how she stares blankly at times, but it also feels like she is a pure manipulator. I get the vibe she uses her sex appeal to get what she wants….meh

  • Trenton

Also horrible spot to pause the vid clip. The actor should sue ew for defamation

    • Liz

It wasnt that funny until you mentioned it now I cant stop laughing.

    • mindys

agreed, I didn’t even notice it that much. Now I can’t stop laughing at it either.

  • DW

A great ep! I knew the cliffhanger was coming with Alicia-Peter-Will. That’s fine. Peter is making Childs look good now. He can be controlled by his mother and the political boss Eli. How good is Alan Cumming? After 2 minutes onscreen I want to spray the room with air sanitizer. Loved Cary. No matter what the scene Cary always has a look of intelligence about him. Mixed with his charm and ambition he will be a good adversary next year. The depositions were excellent and realistic. Been there and know! Good that L-G didn’t have a case against the state. That keeps it real. But they couldn’t quite go all the way and still had Kalinda solving everything. Love Kalinda but they are going to have to make her less superhuman to maintain reality here. Another good thing was the crew at L-G & Cary acting professional even though they are now on opposite sides-very good writing and acting. Looking forward to next year for what is the best written and best acted show on all of TV. Thanks for a great year.

    • Mark

I love Kalinda like you do and also agree that can sometimes seem superhuman – that’s why I loved last week’s episode when she wouldn’t answer Alicia’s question about whether she was gay. To me, that showed a vulnerable side to her we hadn’t seen yet. It was nice to know that the fearless Kalinda – an expert gun user, a strong physical speciman – has difficulty being upfront about her sexuality and her private life. She is, indeed, a complex character.

  • Kate

Agreed. Kalinda is one of the most intriguing characters to come around in a long time. Kind of (and I do mean kind of) like Spike from Buffy…good, bad, both, what’s their honour code etc.Good TV!
