'Chuck Versus The Role Models' recap: Fighting for his life, in more ways than one

These next few weeks will help determine whether Chuck survives to take on a new set of missions. It’s a good thing, therefore, that the series gave us one of its trickiest, most intricately-arranged editions this week. Or not. What I mean is, this was a very good hour, but probably not a Chuck for newbies, and new viewers — or at least a lot more of the viewers that used to watch and have been sucked into that maelstrom of madness that is Dancing With the Stars — are what Chuck needs.

The hour played off the series’ current major plot: Chuck and Sarah not only together romantically, but taking the relationship to the next level, while testing whether romance can survive the spy life. This was contrasted with a veteran married CIA couple, the Turners, played by Fred Willard and Swoosie Kurtz. Two pros at snippy sniping, Willard and Kurtz were good at playing their roles as espionage experts, and at being devious squabblers. The mission needed to be a simple one, so that it didn’t get in the way of the relationship. Thus this bagatelle: The two couples had to secure some software harmful to CIA security designed by bad-guy Otto Von Vogel. The challenge was that the software was located around the neck of Otto’s snarling Bengal tiger.

Subplots? You bet. Morgan and Casey had some fun bumbling through Morgan’s field training, while, over in Africa, Ellie and Devon took care of ailing locals in the pouring rain.

It took some finesse to keep these very different stories moving along, but director Fred Toye, who’s also done some key episodes of Fringe, maintained quick, zippy rhythms. The hour expanded sufficiently in the right places for Willard and Kurtz to establish their own comic pace and commit a triple-cross, and contracted in the Ellie-Awesome moments to make us (well, me, at least) think this story line was superfluous. (Silly me.)

A few concluding thoughts:

• I thought Chuck and Sarah were very convincing as both a couple in the throes of new intimacy and scared that they’d eventually, if they stayed together for another couple of decades, turn into their badgering “role models,” the Turners.

• I like the “30-foot rule” about a spy’s proximity to a weapon. Anyone know if this has any basis in fact?

• I loved the final twist: Devon’s illness cutting short his and Ellie’s African adventure (instead of Ellie, who was the homesick one). It featured baddie Justin Sullivan (Scott Holroyd), who got to utter the fine, comic-sinister line, “I made it look like malaria; she doesn’t suspect a thing.”

Where do you think Chuck goes from here? And by that I mean, please speculate both on this week’s episode, next week’s, and the future of the series itself. Thanks.

I love it. I think it is okay that they are together, I’m sure there will continue to be tension. I hate how shows think it is the kiss of death to get characters together and then drag it out for 9 seasons (cough X-files) and don’t even give a satisfying conclusion. It makes me happy to see Chuck happy and hopefully his newfound happiness will last at least another episode.

    • GimplyGump ☺

Plus a happier Chuck is a much more confident Chuck. Notice how easily and confidently he pointed the gun last night?

  • LOL

Great first 45 minutes. Crappy resolution of this week’s mission. Nice finish in Africa, though.

    • darclyte

I pretty much agree. The ending with the “role models” was seen coming from a mile away. The ending with Awesome, while not shocking, was a bit surprising. It first seemed like Justin would perhaps be making a play for Ellie. For him to be a spy was a nice twist.

  • Anonymous

Did they just kill off Captain Awesome!?! I mean, Justin Sullivan said that he “Took care of him”! That usually means they killed someone off! Not Dr. Super Fantastic White Person!

    • Christie

Nah–it would have been so easy to have Awesome die on site rather than just make him sick. Since this Justin character is a previously-seen baddie (although I don’t remember him) I think he must know that Ellie is Chuck’s sister and he wants the couple back in the U.S. Maybe Ellie is important to an end spy game featuring Chuck (and I think their dad is going to return as well).

    • isembard

Ooh, maybe the Ring implanted someting in Awesome, so he’s an unwitting mule of Ring info. At any rate, while I agree that it did sound sinister, they wouldn’t kill Awesome. He’s just too…awesome!

    • RK

So, we can assume that the Ring knows all about Chuck…so why don’t they do everything to acquire him?

    • melissa

I really hope Awesome doesn’t end up dying…

      Great episode last night!

  • Socal

OH please please SAVE chuck! I love this show! This is the best show on T.V! Get rid of DWTS. SAVE CHUCK!

    • Jim

amen these “reality shows” need to be put on the back burner and leave real entertainment up front. And Chuck is real Entertaining.

      • TMRZoo Neil

Sadly, these reality shows are here to stay. They are much cheaper to produce than the normal hour long show and we all know dollar is king. Get used to them. If anything, we will probably see more rather than less of them.
As far as last night’s show, I love the dynamic between Casey and Morgan. Hilarious stuff.
And I’m very happy that Chuck and Sarah are finally together, but they better start to make it interesting.
I’d love to see this show last another season. Great show. Makes my Monday nights.

Chuck is one of the best shows on the air! They’ve done more plot twists in their short span than many others. Love the fact that we’re getting to witness how a two agents can grow as a couple- not just a long and drawn out will-they/ won’t they situation. Shows like DWTS make me want to turn off the tv.

  • wolverine

Truly one of the best shows on TV…one of the few that I actually look forward to every week. Loved Morgan and Casey this week. But they better not kill off Captain Awesome!

    • GimplyGump ☺

If Ellie was having trouble contacting Chuck, he’s going to have a lotta ‘splainin to do about their aprtment! :D

  • Wendy

Love this show. It just keeps on getting better and better. Can’t wait to see what season 4 will bring!

  • Mae

It was a great episode but maybe not as great as last week’s. Overall though, it’s pretty obvious that Chuck and Sarah finally becoming a real couple now, is better for the show. It adds a fresh new dynamic that we could all enjoy.

    • rex

Even Babe Ruth couldn’t hit a home run every time at bat. This was still a very entertaining episode. The scene with Morgan finding a very scantily clad Sarah at the fridge was fun. The training in the Buy More was better. Morgan vs the tiger was great, and Sarah explaining to Chuck her aprehension to moving in was very heartwarming. The dynamic between Chuck and Sarah is electric. They have known each other for 3 years, but the way they anticipate each other and synergy they create is the glue that binds the show. I cannot see any other show within the last 20 years That compares. I must not be the only one that feels this way. Go to Youtube and type in Chuck and Sarah and look at the hundreds, maybe thousands of fanvids. It is a true testiment as to how this couple has captured our hearts.

    I miss Shaw…

    • Hope

      oh please..

    • Strepsi

Jo-Ann, stop thinking with your bean, and start thinking with your noggin.

Loved it. Casey and Morgan was the best part, kudos to the writes for hitting comedy gold. ;)

My two favorite bits with them, was at the gun rink, Casey tell Morgan he’s there from him now aww… And when Morgan flies out of the window chased by the cat and Casey catches him reminded me of First Date and the fact that the big guy will always be around to catch his teammates when they fall.

I always forget how beautifully badass tigers really are, that one, Sasha, was amazing.

Next week looks amazing, Though poor Casey, what has he done to make Ellie think he’s evil? Is it because of the lie that Devon and Chuck told her? Hopefully she’ll find out the truth and realize she’s falsely accused an innocent man. Can’t wait for next Monday.

    • Heather

I loved when Morgan shot the gun, it went up in the air and Casey caught it. The scenes with Morgan and Casey are so funny.

      • Kerrin

Morgan shooting the gun was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. It made me spit my drink out!

  • Jill

Great show as usual. I’m confused though…..was what the point of giving Devon fake malaria? It was fake yes? Was it just to get them to leave?

    • Hope

I think it was so that the Ring could hunt down and take out Team B. The team is what they are after and if it takes targeting loved ones and friends to draw the gang out into the open, that’s what they’ll do.

      • jjmmtt

Well, the Ring guy mentioned that they could skip customs. Maybe they smuggled something in with Ellie and Awesome?

  • Richie

Should Chuck get the chop at the end of this season. Interesting blog piece on the show’s continuing ratings struggles and why it might be time to finally call it a day…

      Richie,
Nice job pumping up the traffic for your website. Try cloaking your intentions better next time.

    • Roggie

Interesting article, I think you are a bit harsh on Chuck but I can see you point (sometimes..). I’d rather see Chuck any time of the day than those dreadful MTV/VH1/Bravo “pseudo-realities”. I hope it doesn’t get canceled…

  • aby

I don’t remember Justin, can someone tell me which episode he was previously in? This wasn’t one of my favorite episodes, but I still adore the show and hope it returns next season.

    • aby

Nevermind. As far as I can tell from IMDB this was his first episode, but he will return for more. So not a previously seen bad guy.

    • PSac

He was also in One Tree Hill.

      • Guillermo

We can’t really tell you what is good and bad rock music since it is an onpiion. We don’t set the standard for what’s good and what’s not. You say you need FULL ASSURANCE, well we can’t give you that since there is no set definition of what’s good.BUT I will tell you what my idea of good and bad rock music is.Bad rock: Trivium, Fall Out Boy, Boys Like Girls.Good rock: Norther, Carcass, Opeth (this though is only metal, there’s other kinds of good rock)Now my reason for listing Trivium as bad, is not because I don’t like the genre of Metalcore, because there are some very good bands in that genre. But Trivium doesn’t sound original, they just blend in in the back of the group with all the other bands. As for Fall Out Boy- I didn’t say them because I’m a hater. The genre of Pop Punk is not really bad . just not my cup of tea. I think there are some good Pop Punk bands but the band Fall Out Boy is one of those that just sound flat out BAD. Now for Boys Like Girls- they aren’t original, and sound the same as every other band on MTV.Generally, I don’t have a band that I think is bad, because actually those bands are good FOR THEIR GENRE OR TYPE OF MUSIC. Some bands are just not for me .not my kind of music. But I had to think really hard on what bands I actually considered bad’ for their genre and just music in general. I hope my answer helps.

I’m not sure if the cia has a 30 foot rule, but I know people in the military and paramilitary are never without a weapon.

Chuck is the best show on tv.

  • Wes

Loved it. And I’m one of the viewers that wasn’t a fan of most of the first 13. But the past 2 episodes have taken this show to the next level. They fired on all cylinders and Zach and Yvonne have been doing amazing work. The writing was some of the best we’ve seen with Chuck this week and last. I am beyond excited about where they take it this season and next. As long as they don’t pull anymore unbelievable obstacle plots for Chuck and Sarah I think it’s going to be a fantastic ride.
