Do you really think Gabourey Sidibe didn't do a good job hosting 'Saturday Night Live'? I disagree, and here's why

I’m pretty surprised at how many of you seem to think Gabourey Sidibe did a poor job hosting SNL this week. Read the full post.

Does anyone remember when Robert DeNiro hosted? He obviously read from cue cards. I don’t think he looked even remotely engaged in his scenes. If you find fault with one, fault them all.

Dee, Robert DeNiro was a terrible host. I think most people agree.

She was just not a good actress. That skit where she was at a press conference and her ex boyfriend was trying to get her back was bad high school level acting – cringe worthy. That is why I did not like her as a host – not the other reasons being tossed around.

Elaine, I agree with you about that final skit — she did a very poor job with that one.

I wonder why? I thought that she did a pretty good job of inhabiting her characters in the other skits, despite the line-flubs (that “Department of Motor Vehicles Employee” of hers definitely reminded me of folks I’ve encountered at the DMV in the “real world”!). Is it more difficult to play “oneself” as an actor, than it is to assume an entirely different character?

I think SNL cators to a particular audience that is not used to seeing someone who looks like Gabby. I don’t think it matters how funny or charming she is that particular audience wasn’t going to see or hear because of who it was coming from. As you stated in the article, the flubs of the lines and reading of the cue cards is something that has been going on not just by the hosts but the regulars of the show. So what was their excuse? Obviously, people didn’t think they were that bad since the show is still on the air for all these years. Gabby and JT have been the only funny hosts of the show is years. So why all the fuss now? SNL’s audience just doesn’t want to see a large, dark skinned, woman. I also noted that while she hosted Keenan, never had so much work and he was only in about 3 skits. It’s like he can only work if another black is on th show.

Well, now it’s been announced that she’s going to be a guest celebrity co-host on “The View.”

    What say ye?

    She’s certainly warm and personable; personality-wise, I can’t think of a better co-host.

The only problem is that in most of her interviews, she really hasn’t shown much personal or intellectual depth. (As much as I admire her as an actress, that “giggly girly-girl” routine of hers really gets on my nerves — it seems somehow unseemly for a woman who’s almost 27 to be carrying on like a teenager.)

So I wonder whether she’ll be able to summon the appropriate gravitas to be a stimulating interviewer or discussant.

She’s obese, you dumbass! Maybe she acts like a girl because she didn’t mature at the same rate with her weight making her an outsider. But the truth is no one seems more well-developed in the mind and personality than Gabby.

    • Zach

OH, AND I KNOW NO ONE WILL EVER SEE THIS, BUT DID YOU JUST REFER TO “THE VIEW” WITH THE WORD “GRAVITAS”? BWAHAHAHAHA

  • mikeyintheoc

TRUST ME BETTY WHITE WONT FLUB A LINE AND YES GABOUREY DID A FINE JOB

Sudibe was a joy to have on SNL. I’m really tired of everyone’s hate on her. She was great, and if you had a problem with her, you’re very cynical.

  • MB

I thought she did a good job. Some hosts are so anchored to the cue cards, they never make eye contact with the other cast members.

  • sally1018

I thought she did a great job and I think she’s adorable and very down to earth.

  • Tucker Watcher

She didn’t just flub a line or two, she screwed up in EVERY SKETCH she was in. Regardless, it was a terrible show anyhow and even the best host wouldn’t have been able to save it.

  • sara

I was nervous for her as well from the minute she started flubbing her lines. I felt she is too inexperienced to HOST the show. I think if she had shown up on the news part of the show, and then came after a couple more movies it would have been more appropriate. None of the skits were funny. January Jones was def worse than her.

Comparison ofGabourey Sidibe to absolute masters of comic timing like Carson, Betty White and Bea Arthur only undermines your position and highlights her shortcomings. If you really can’t see the difference then you are in the wrong line of work!

    • Zach

You obviously didn’t get the thrust of his argument. The point is that we would let the big-timers off the hook for a mistake or two, but because this girl is young and obese, everyone is out to get her. I’m glad Ken Tucker made this new post, because the disproportionate amount of criticism for Gabby’s hosting when it WASN’T THAT BAD AT ALL evidently stems from people’s desire not to see a fat person on TV. Not everyone feels this way, but many who claim it’s because she lacks talent, but then you go look at other posts and they’re saying how fat and ugly she is. She didn’t suck; the writing did. She wasn’t any worse than any other AVERAGE host of SNL. Not great, really, but it’s mostly the material’s fault, and no, she’s not a natural on live-TV sketch comedy.

      • Tucker Watcher

False. We don’t care if she is young. We don’t care if she is obese. We don’t care if she’s a woman or black or whatever other excuse you are trying to give.
First of all, Carson had his own TV show and he was good 99% of the time. And the clips of Golden Girls are a compilation of bloopers across many episodes.
Look, if Betty White screws up her lines in every sketch she’s in next week, we’ll give her just as hard of a time, I promise you.
As already pointed out, Robert Deniro was a horrible host, and so was January Jones. I guess that makes your “young and obese” theory look pretty stupid, doesn’t it?

That was by far the worst performance in the history of SNL I had to turn it off it was like watching a couple of six graders trying to do a skit in front of the class for the first time.

  • Shannon

She did a terrible job. That food monster should be kept off of television.

  • Bekkah

She did a poor job. It’s more than messing up lines. She broke character and laughed. She’s not the only one who’s done this, but let’s call it how we see it. Why is this chick getting a pass on it? Somebody said in response to Gabby’s criticism, “All I know is, she got the opportunity anyone would love to have.” What is this, charity? She wasn’t ready, plan and simple, and to disregard that is a curious thing, in my opinion.
