Although I watch it every week, Parenthood isn’t a show I’ve written about a lot here, primarily because of the Tuesday night pileup of good shows I’ve mentioned frequently. When Justified and The Good Wife are competing in the same time-period for attention, Parenthood — a modest but artful series — can get lost. If it was scheduled on a different night, I’ll bet it would already have a more ardent following and a lot more media attention. I’m glad NBC has renewed it for a second season, but the network clearly hasn’t a clue how to program Parenthood for maximum effectiveness.
Last night’s episode may have seemed at first like a tangle of story lines. Adam (Peter Krause) and dad Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) taking a road trip; Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Jasmine (Joy Bryant) organizing a birthday party for their son; Sarah (Lauren Graham) trying to cope with the anger of daughter Amber (Mae Whitman); Julia (Erika Christensen) being told by a doctor that her daughter Sydney (Savannah Paige Rae) is “gifted.”
But ultimately, the hour cohered as an examination of the ways different family members dealt with secrets and insecurities, hiding or admitting them with varying degrees of honesty.
Part of the pleasure of Parenthood as it proceeds is in watching characters who don’t often interact come together. Thus the road trip Zeek insisted on taking with Adam was tartly funny at first, with both men jabbering awkwardly. Similarly, we don’t often see sisters-in-law Julia and Adam’s wife Kristina (Monica Potter) engage with each other, and this subplot was particularly rewarding.
Julia mistook her Sydney’s obsession with a ball the kid had made from rubber bands as an early sign of the same sort of autism diagnosed in Kristina’s son, Max (Max Burkholder). Instead, Sydney is deemed a gifted child, and in very brief scenes, the episode deftly sketched in a variety of complexities. Kristina feeling guilty that she’s almost pleased when she thinks Sydney may be autistic; Julia abashed at how to tell Kristina about her daughter’s different diagnosis without sounding as though she’s bragging or in danger of hurting Kristina’s feelings.
Last week, Parenthood focused on Sarah’s dating of Amber’s teacher (a contained story-arc featuring Jason Ritter, of whom I presume we won’t see a lot more). This week, Sarah was dealing with the fall-out from that, which means Amber was furious and rebellious. These roles are particularly difficult to pull off. Lauren Graham can hardly get a line of dialogue out without reminding us of her indelible Lorelai Gilmore, but she’s quickly establishing Sarah as a very different sort of person — not as articulate, more anguished. It was very good to see her being comforted by her mother, played by the terrific Bonnie Bedelia, who doesn’t get nearly enough screen-time. As for Amber, playing TV’s one-billionth irritating teenager is its own challenge, but Whitman is a subtle actor who risks being unsympathetic and, in so doing, wins us over with honesty (both from the performer and her character).
(I did wish the episode had followed up on Amber skipping out on her SATs last week, though.)
As for Jabbar’s birthday party — boy, was that nicely awkward or what? Dax Shepard is proving to be Parenthood’s secret surprise. He’s not just trading on his usual goofiness in playing Crosby; the guy’s got range.
All in all, just the kind of deceptively messy, intricately choreographed drama that makes Parenthood special. And can I just add what great job young Max Burkholder is doing in playing the very tricky role of Max?
Did you watch Parenthood? What do you think of the show? Which of its plots most interest you?

Please come in !
I don’t get to watch it regularly and last night I only got to see the last 10 minutes, but Dax had me a little misty when he finally got to see his son being born. Good stuff.
Team Dax. Like woah.
Crosby is one of the most amazing characters I’ve come across in modern RL drama. He’s the easy-living, boathouse-living, hair-growing completely void of responsibilities failure that every parent fears but expects, but still completely at ease with his situation. And then Jabbar and Jasmine come along and he kick-starts so eagerly into ‘dad’ mode. Dude’s got -layers’. I love loved last night’s. The ending was so sweet but still managed to be uncliched. Amazing show.
Sign me up for Team Dax too!
Ditto Team Dax. His character is absolutely the ONLY reason I bother with this god-awful trainwreck of weak, apologetic parenting. I’m so incredibly sick of only seeing one end of the spectrum or another on television: Either too strict and overreacting to everything, or woefully lenient and then tearfully questioning why “nothing works.” Every time a kid on this show does something wrong, it all ends in the parents apologizing for making the kid feel bad. Where is the parent that says, “You know what? You screwed up, you’re getting punished, and I know you say you hate me and I’m ruining your life, but you’re the one who broke the rules. You’re grounded, and that’s it”.
FYI…NBC has been showing a repeat of the week’s episode on Saturday nights.
I think this is a fantastic show. Thank you for giving it some attention on your Blog. Tuesday is a packed night, I agree. I am not so sure Parenthood belongs at that time slot. Still, I am thrilled for the early pick-up and adore this show.
I agree. This is one of my must-watch shows, but it comes on so late tha tI must DVR it. This show would do better at an 8 or a 9 time slot w/ another family show. Does NBC have another family show? Oh and my 2 fav plots are Dax’s plot and Sarah/Amber/Teacher plot. Also, I love how the characters act realistically and not all soap-y.
I am just glad they didn’t name Jabbar “Cool” like they did in the movie.
I actually kind of wish they had kept his name as “Cool,” just for the sheer absurdity of it.
I think it’s because in the movie, the mom was a non-character flake, and in the TV show, she’s a grounded human. “Cool” wouldn’t cut it, lol.
I try to watch this show when the Good Wife is a rerun. The best storyline is with Joy Bryant/Dax. I love their awkward chemistry and him falling in love with his son. They HAVE to move this show around. They have to find a better time slot for this show. I still can’t stand Monica Potter. That chick can’t act.
Agree on Monica Potter. I feel like she and January Jones should get their own show together called “Awkward, Wooden Blondes”
I actually enjoyed Monica Potter in this episode. My favorite moment was when Peter Krause, Monica Potter and Max were in bed at the end and her reaction to Max saying he loved them as much as he loved beatles. Her happiness seemed so real. Second favorite moment of the episode: when Lauren Graham tried to explain Zeke’s outburst at Jabber’s birthday as, “We think he has Tourette’s”
You found that amusing? Ha ha. I guess aspergers is halarious also. Keep perpetuating the myth that tourettes is just verbal outbursts. Pure ignorance
The show runners should be ashamed of themselves for the Tourette’s line. For a show that’s really priding itself in embracing a childhood disability, to let that line fall dead like that was just poorly done. I’ve got a kid with a dual diagnosis of Tourette’s and Asperger’s, so the show lost a lot of ground with me.
Seriously, lighten up. It’s a fictional show for crying out loud.
If the writers should be ashamed of themselves for anything, it’s for portraying autistic children and whiny, annoying, spoiled, manipulative brats. I get that it’s a spectrum disorder, and there are many colors in the autism rainbow, but I feel they’re doing a piss-poor job of accurately conveying what Asperger’s really is. Max just comes off as spoiled kid… a result of crappy, mushy, inconsistent parenting. It galls me that network television wouldn’t take something like that more seriously.
it’s actually pretty sad to me that you think the character of Max comes across as spoiled. If you’ve even seen the show then you would see how much these parent actually care for their son and just want the best for him. I really hope you’re not a parent.
I agree with you. Normally I am watching the Good Wife & would tape Southland. There have been so many wonderful shows on at 10 on Tues., even tho I like a lot of the cast, PH just hasn’t done it for me. I think the best in the cast are Peter Krause and Dax Shepard. Personally I don’t care for the casting of Max, but this was first episode I’ve seen all the way through. And such a cliche with the all daughters hate their mothers scene-Not true.
I haven’t missed an episode yet. This is one of the best shows currently on TV. I love all the characters and all he story lines! Thank you, NBC, for being smart enough to renew this one!!
This is a great show with heart that I look forward to every week. Thanks for giving it a review. I hope more people tune in.
I LOVE this show, and last night’s episode was my favorite so far. I review it every week at my blog, Couchtime With Jill.
My favorite new show this year!
I just wish the show would slow the pacing down- every episode seems so frantic. Jason Katims does such a great job of juggling a large cast on Friday Night Lights, and not overwhelming every episode with such a feeling of urgency, that it makes me wonder just how much input and control he has over Parenthood? Does anyone know his involvement level?
Absolutely love this show. I have yet to see an episode without tears falling from my eyes at some point. They really know how to nail the emotion in a subtle way. I like Lauren Graham, and she obviously plays the role very well, but I can’t stop wondering how different the character would be with Maura Tierney playing her. Really like the changes they made from the movie version. Crosby’s character is fantastic. Best change of all.
Lauren is great, and Maura would have been great, I’m sure. An obvious benefit to Maura in the role is that the teenage daughter would STRONGLY have resembled her. Anyone else notice that? I have thought from the beginning that Mae Whitman bears an uncanny resemblance to Maura Tierney–so that would have been fun. But I’ll never complain when the situation led to Lauren Graham being on weekly TV again.
Maura was the only reason I was going to give this show a chance. Lauren is good but Maura would have been great. No one does that B*** please face like her.
Thanks for doing a recap! Love this show.
I love this show. I gave up good wives on tuesday just to watch it. I find the show soo touching and honest. Very happy that nbc renewed it. I hope they do move it though tuesday is jammed packed. I dont care what day or time this show is on Ill follow it anywhere.
“I am an irrational hard ass with rage issues. Don’t piss me off.” Love, love this show, but I only watch it OnDemand.
the Crosby storyline is definitely my favourite one … and that’s saying something given my disdain for Dax Shepard.
But watching him in Parenthood is actually turning my opinion of him 180 degrees around.
That last shot of him watching the birth of Jabbar and tearing up … was beautiful and felt genuine.
I loathed Dax Shepard too but last night especially is really bringing me around on him. Maybe Kristen Bell hasn’t lost her marbles…completely.
Me, too.
