'Dancing With the Stars': Tony says 'catatonic' Kate Gosselin displays 'zero energy, no motivation. I have to push her every week, it's exhausting'

Kate Gosselin said that her eight kids were visiting her this week in L.A., and her performance on Monday’s Dancing With the Stars reminded me of one of her tykes — Mady or Cara, say — playing dress-up and trying to mimic being a grown-up. On this movie-themed night, Kate’s dance with Tony Dovolani to the Breakfast Club song “Don’t You Forget About Me” was a combination of galumphing and temper-tantrum stiffness.

During the rehearsal segment, Tony tried to get Kate to do The Swim and got met with that grim stare we know so well from Jon & Kate Plus Eight. “Do they do that in the movie?” she asked blankly. She turned her deadly gaze to the camera and shrugged, “Whatever works for him.”

Gee, that’s the winning spirit, Kate! That’s a fine example to set for your children, the ones of whom you later said, in your weekly plea for votes, “They count down the days til Monday… They live and breathe for it.”

Bruno said Kate looked “catatonic.” Kate blamed her lack of energy on her “visit from eight little friends.”

At this point, you have to just throw up your hands and admit you can’t win against Kate: On the one hand, the kids are what keep her going, and the reason you should vote for her. On the other foot, they’re why she’s exhausted and mopey even in the middle of performing.

There’s no way Katatonic Kate is going to be voted on through another week of this show, is there?

UPDATE: On last night’s Lopez Tonight, Steve-O from Jackass and former DWTS contestant himself, joined Lopez’s “Keep Kate” campaign. Steve-O insisted that a vote for Gosselin was a vote for “robotic dancing” and would drive out “people with talent”… so of course this was a cause he supported.

ADDED UPDATE: On the Tuesday-morning edition of The View, Whoopi Goldberg said of Kate, “She’s an angry bitch, this one… She sucks, she’s got to go.” Elisabeth Hasselbeck defended Kate, in a roundabout way, by saying the fact that Gosselin is still on DWTS is proof that people are voting for Kate, and Hasselbeck — no surprise here — worked in a political dig during her defense: “It’s a democracy, unless ACORN is involved.” ACORN? Really? Gimme a break…

    blah I haaaaate Kate!!!!!!!!!

    • joblo

Kinda sick of all the Kate hate going around EW and other places. I’m not even a Kate fan and never watched her show. But it’s really ugly after awhile – makes the haters sound spiteful and childish. If you hate her so much, just tune her out or ignore her. Mom was always right: if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all. If she has problems of her own that are so bad she’ll ultimately be responsible for them, but everyone repeating “kate sucks” doesn’t help anything.

      • haterofkate

If you’re so sick of the “Kate hate” then stop going on message boards and reading comments about her. Common sense should tell you that 9-1/2 times out of 10 the comments are going to be negative.

      • jennifer

Unfortunately you can’t avoid Kate if you want to watch Dancing with the Stars. I enjoy the show, but have to tape it so I can fast forward past her. It just gets tedious.

      • Tom

        Yeah, but..she really sucks.

      • jordan

“and Hasselbeck — no surprise here — worked in a political dig during her defense”

and ken tucker — no surprise here — worked in a political dig of Hasselbeck during his “review” of DWTS

      • graciegal

Couldn’t possibly agree more (with everyone else who’s responded to your idiotic post). If you don’t like what you’re reading, wherEVER you are, how about – leaving? And in case it’s not clicked with you yet, your constant haranguing about poor li’l kate serves only to inflame the kate-haters even more…

      • Suzi

When you said that you never watched the show you said it all! If you watched that show and had any kind of compassion you know what a pathetic person she is!!

      • AngryRobotSkeleton

It would be easy to ignore her and not vote for her, which I try to do, but…week after week, she stays, and a better, more deserving dancer goes home, which is what drives the Kate Hate in my house. I get her reasons for continuing in reality TV to support her 8 kids, but she needs to get off the dance floor and to her new show, so I can ignore her properly.

      • Linda

I agree with this individual 100%. All this hate for this lady. Put yourself in her shoes raising all these kids on her own. Ya she’s alittle out there but at least she didn’t walk out on her kids and she has to have a life.

    • joblo

And how many of all the I Hate Kate crowd actually sit and regularly watch all of the reality crap on the cable channels? You hate her for exploiting her kids, but then at the same time just feed the beast by supporting all of these other reality shows that exist purely to exploit people and make them famous for nothing. It’s a cycle that your viewing eyes continue to feed. Just wondering…

      • Zach

Guess what? I hate Kate and don’t like Jake “The Bachelor” Pavelka either!

      • trisha

All I care about is that I am tired of watching Kate’s bad dancing, if you can even call it that.

They should have danced the movie “Weekend at Bernie’s” and Kate would play Bernie being dragged around the dance floor.

      • jennifer

I have always managed to avoid Kate simply by not watching her show, but she’s bloody everywhere now, and I’m tired of her. Go away Kate!

      • Unicorn

tricia… you said it all! That is the funniest and the most spot-on)comment I’ve read on all these boards!

      • Ravanne

I certainly never watched the TLC show. Not one single episode because I thought it was exploitive of the children so my perception of Kate comes solely from having seen her on entertainment and morning tv interviews and seeing her here. You don’t need to have watched the show to come away with a seriously negative notion of this woman’s personality.

She is, frankly, an awful dancer. I don’t even know if you can call the lurching about the dance floor that she does “dancing”. But while they’ve had other bad dancers on DWTS, they at least had charming personalities. I loved Buzz and I liked George Hamilton and some of the other less proficient performers. Kate is sullen, angry with the world and I’m irritated that every week, she needs to mention her children in an effort to milk sympathy votes. The other dancers are putting serious effort into learning, while Kate just feels sorry for herself. Long past time to send her packing.

      • ShannonP

I’m not a Kate fan and I don’t watch reality TV. I’m just sick of looking at this woman’s face every week, every time I turn on my tv or look online. What has she done to be a “star”? Hatch eight little chicklets and then exploit them so that companies will pay for her to raise them? Ugh.

      • josieG

Actually the only reality show I watch is American Idol. I don’t watch her show and any others. None of the crap on VH1 or Bravo or CBS, ABC, NBC… you get the picture. I can’t stand all these people that will do anything to get themselves and their families on TV. I have survived my whole life without having to depend on 15 minutes of “fame” so they should be just fine without it as well. I’ve read somewhere that Kate said she wouldn’t be able to take care of her children without these reality shows. Really? I wonder how the rest of us manage??

      • @Liz

The difference though is that Kate is exploiting children. Once you are an adult you are free to exploit yourself all you want.

      • queue55

@ trisha…LOL! Weekend at Bernie’s is inspired! Kudos!

      • Sue1

Thank you, trisha, for a great comment.

      • NicWin

What a bunch of liars. No one here watches reality TV, and everyone here hates Kate, yet SOMEONE still keeps voting for her every week. Stop lying.

      • graciegal

        @trisha – LOL!! Perfect!! Weekend at Kate’s…(sigh)…

      • MLD

I dislike Kate and don’t watch any of the reality crap. The statement may apply to many, but definitely not all

      • teresa

Trisha’s comment was made on the news this morning, by a newscaster on CNN, I think. It’s not an original comment. So stop giving her credit. I heard it at 6:30 AM this morning.

    • Yo-Yo

Someone from the Simple Minds should punch Kate in the kock for that performance.

      • StephK

Oh my goodness- that cracked me up!

      • Coco

Me too. I am still laughing:)

    • MCGUIRE

I agree, it made me feel like i had been chained to A CEMENT BALL, POOR TONY- The guy can only make up so many excuses ,and still she acts lethargic

    • Sally in Chicago

Kate is stiff, she hasn’t improved at all and you gotta feel sorry for Tony. You can tell the way he looks at her, he doesn’t like being with her.

      • abeeotch

I do feel sorry for Tony, and I don’t even like Tony.
She just can’t dance, like…at all.

      • teresa

Couldn’t Tony quit and end our suffering? Or would they stick some other poor sucker in there for her. She is such a sour puss. I feel sorry for her. She never has a genuine emotion on her face.

    • steph

the “Keep Kate” campaign is the equivalent of Vote for the Worst. I think it’s hilarious, even though she sucks, and I do feel bad for Tony.

      • Patti

I was thinking the same thing. Steve-O is trying to start his own VFTW campaign for DwtS. Unfortunately, Kate isn’t half as likable as the under-talented Sanjaya. Sanjaya was a terrible singer, but at least he had a goofy charm about him. Kate needs to stop whining about her 8 kids, since they’re the only reason why she became a famous “star” in the first place! :(

    • Mary Q. Contrary

Kate is totally the Sanjaya of DWTS.

      • ericalina

please don’t insult sanjaya that way.

      • Quincy

        ROFL

      • jess

        sanjaya at least tried.

      • teresa

No. Sanjaya is a sweetheart. There is nothing sweet about Kate. She is a scary scary lady.

    • M

It’s really NOT about Kate Hate. It’s more about the fact its a ‘dancing show,’ and she really has gone about as far as she should.

Her dancing time should be done… period.

      • teresa

The only reason she’s on TV is because she has 8 kids! She’s not an actress, or have people forgotten that?? And neither is Elizabeth Hasselbeck. These two women came to TV because of reality TV. Now it’s time for them to LEAVE.

    • Hannah

You people need to get a life of your own and quit hating this woman. She’s a single mom with 8 kids. Why is it so hard to understand that she needs to work to take care of them? Every other mom in this country does it; she just happens to be on TV. No one complained when she was on Jon and Kate; everyone liked her then. And why does Elizabeth have to be brought into everything? You people are jealous because not only is she pretty but she has a brain too. People complain that she’s too whiny. Maybe if those beasts on the View would let her talk for once she wouldn’t whine. People hate her because she goes by facts- people always hate the truth. And if you don’t like the truth, then suck it.

      • Karen

Facts??!!! Hasselbeck doesn’t come near the facts. She repeast crap she heard on Fox News…. she quoted “facts” from the “University that studies steel” wehn talking about the World Trade Center buildings?? HA!!! The only reason she’s on the View is they needed an uneducated right-wing counter to the generally educated liberal others. Elizabeth is nothing but a reality TV reject herself. She hasn’t done anything worthy of being in the public eye.

      • Karen

As for Kate… being a single mom, having to work has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that she flat out can not dance!!! This is a dancing competition. Why vote a truly worthy dancer off, (that probably needs the money as much as Kate and doesn’t have a book out or hop from show to show promoting it). Get a grip. Like her or not, you don’t keep a wash out that doesn’t even try to improve over a person working for it.

  • Howard

Dude, you’re such a hater. A few weeks ago a few of the other contestants were cursing at their pros. Talk about the winning spirit. I’m wondering if you dedicated an entire column to that? Listen, I don’t have any affection for Kate. She can’t dance to save her life but this woman is no worse than a lot of the other contestants who couldn’t perform and who were seriously lacking in the charm department.

    • Anon

      He’s just reporting the facts.

    • Amidala

Oh calm down, Howard. Kate always gets the most attention. Nbd.

    • Mary Elyse

Get real, Howard. Tom DeLay, Tucker Carlson and Buzz Aldrin could all dance Kate under the table. The only one to put on a performance equal in it’s horrification to Kate’s was that Mister (or Master … whatever) P person. The only difference was that he didn’t hang around like mildew week after agonizing week.

      • Kat

Oh, Master P did hang around for weeks at first. It was brutal. And he was actually really mean and acted like he hated every minute of the show. It’s hard for me to say it, but I think he was more obnoxious than Kate. Wait, wait, I just can’t get behind that. They’re tied for #1 Person I Want(ed) to B*tch-Slap All the Way from the DWTS Studio to Their Home Where They Belong.

      • Marie

Master P was far worse than Kate and had an even worse attitude. Buzz didn’t dance, he walked, and was worse than Kate. As for the charges of exploiting her children, ridiculous. Her kids haven’t been seen outside of the bus stop, playing in THEIR yard, and the most recent trip to Disneyland, which wasn’t reported on for two days. So she and her kids are no longer allowed in public because it is considered being exploitive? Well, then if youever watched a show, commercial, or video on the internet with kids, then that makes you an exploiter of children. Ridiculous!

      • Mary Elyse

Marie, I don’t understand you. I never brought up the exploitation of her children, but since you seem so anxious to pop the lid off of that can of worms let me just take this opportunity to regale you with my opinion.
I don’t know Kate personally. Nor do I wish to know Kate personally. If you know that she and her children went to Disneyland, or, that the children haven’t been seen outside of their own bus stop, playing in their own yard then that’s two two more things that you know about her and her family then me. I have no interest in Kate whatsoever outside of her performances – which have consistently been abysmal – on Dancing With The Stars. She cannot dance and Buzz Aldrin was most certainly not worse than her. Furthermore, at least Buzz always looked happy to be there. There is no joy in Kate. There is only poor, pitiful, Our Lady of Perpetual Sacrifice, everybody please look at me Kate. To hear her talk you’d think she was in a Charles Dickens novel; reduced to selling matches on street corners in the dead of winter in order to feed her eight poorly clothed, underfed, homeless and destitute children. It’s old, it’s worn thin, it’s an insult to single parents who actually are out there busting their butts on behalf of their families and it’s utter nonsense. There are royalties and residuals from her books and Jon and Kate Plus Eight ka-chinging into her bank account as I sit here typing and you sit here reading. If her children are everything to her, as well they should be, then stop the cheap talk and start walking the walk.

      • Ethel

Kate’s just doing what she was told to do by her managers – she’s out there promoting her new reality show (unfortuntely on DWTS with no talent) – showing people there is life after Jon who is still just too darn immature for marriage much less 8 kids. I have to give kudos to my sister-germaphobic nurse mommy who excells in bringing in the bucks to keep her kids together, healthy and happy.

    • Charl

She is way worse than the others. She is so used to living off her kids, that she can’t go a minute without using them to get votes for that pathetic excuse for dancing. “My kids live for it” “They love me on this show more than any other” Then there is the “I love you” every opening Monday. Everytime I think I can’t hate her anymore, she pulls another exploitation of her kids. UGH! GET HER OFF!!! Who on earth is voting for her? Oh yeah, I forgot, its abc.

      • Shelia

Charl….you are so right! All she does is use her kids for a sympathy vote. It’s pretty disgusting.

      • JRE

Or perhaps they count down to Monday because they know Mom will be in LA and they’ll be in PA?!?

      • SRose

…and People Magz. Ditto on “each week I think I can’t hate her more”

      • Quincy

It’s not ABC voting for her – though I’m sure they have a lot to do with the judges rather generous scores – it’s her crazed fan base. These people use every cell phone in their household, and every email address they can use to vote for her. It’s ridiculous.

      • BuckLaGuy

I hope they keep voting for her, it’s a riot to watch her dance. I don’t care for her at all, but the comedy in her dancing is fun to watch… VOTE FOR KATE!!!

    • kross

Howard, you are so wrong. The other contestants at least make an effort to learn their dance. Kate on the other hand expects people to vote for her even though she has a terrible attitude, treats Tony like a dog, and won’t even try to learn her dance. Do you even watch the show? Even the judges are sick of her antics and said as much tonight. SHe has time to be on 30 talk shows this week to promote her book but is too tired to learn her dance which she gets paid $250,000 for! Why should we vote for that?

      • teresa

kross: good point. She’s getting paid to be on this show so why isn’t she even trying to learn to dance? ABC isn’t getting their monies worth.

    • MCGUIRE

yes he just reports the fact’s. PLUS KATE IS JUST DULL- BLESS HER HEART, SHE IS BETTER GIVING BIRTH ,THAN SHE IS ON A DANCE FLOOR- GO FIGURE.

  • TJ

There’s no way the producers are going to let Kate get voted off…everyone is tuning in every week to see what a train wreck she is.

    • Brenda Barrett

No…I literally leave the room or switch the channel when she comes on. I will not devote a second of my life to this whiny witch.

      • lanvin

Gosh Ms. Barrett, honey I think you are doing the right thing by leaving the room. It appears that Kate has an unhealthy effect on your sanity. Stay strong Brenda..stay strong for your personal health. A TV show, in my opinion, isn’t worth anyone’s sanity.

      • Brenda Barrett

I think the fact that I don’t watch this exploitative wannabee validates just how sane I am. I realize that the U.S. population of “man-hating moms” (of which you are one, perhaps?) may adore Kate, but I prefer to watch people with actual talent when I spend time in front of the TV.

      • Liz

Brenda, lighten up – it’s just a television show. No need to stick your head in an oven.

      • GHR

Why does Liz need to lighten up? She stated her opinion thoughtfully without drama.Perhaps you should lighten up in criticizing other posters.

      • Zach

        SNap!

      • Diane

I think Brenda’s right. If the ratings go down during Kate’s 15 minutes maybe DWTS with get the message that we’re tuning in for dancing no walking

  • Heidi

Here’s the thing. she blames her lack of energy on her children and says that her children are the ones who will always get and deserve the bulk of her attention and energy. SO, if she believes this, then she should leave of her own accord!
To stay would disrespect the other dancers who are killing themselves each week to do their best.

    • Marie

She took her kids to Disneyland on Saturday and did who knows what with them on Sunday. She’s burning candles at both ends this week and its no wonder she’s dragging, even with help.

      • jennifer

Oh poor Kate! She had to spend time with her kids! No wonder she’s too tired to do what she’s being paid six figures to do. Bah, she gets no sympathy from me – maybe if she tried being a real working mother instead of a fame whore . . .

      • Lauren

        She is…a human disaster.

      • CleverShrew

Ooh. Disney! well then that explains it. Lets not forget that she was on at least 4 talk shows this past week promoting her books. But that possibly couldn’t be why she’s tired.

    • Quincy

She’s making six figures for DWTS, her ex is faithfully paying child support to the tune of $20,000 each month (and the only reason I know this to be true is she would be screaming bloody murder to the press if he wasn’t). She’s not in this for the money.

She spent the entire last week in Cali to appear on talk shows, etc. Her kids came out to visit with their nannies.

Kate is a fame whore pure and simple – she refuses to believe her fifteen minutes are up. And, thanks to her fanatical fan base, she’s going to be around much longer than she should be. Uncle.

      • Patti

Maybe one of her nannies can take her place on DwtS, since she’s so exhausted. I bet the nanny would be a better student and listen to Tony. Then Kate would have more time to spend with her 8 meal tickets…er, I mean kids! FREE TONY! ;)

  • del

    FREE TONY!

    • ceramamama

It bugs me that the stars that were voted off wanted to dance, and they keep voting for Kate. Poor Tony, not only does he have a crappy partner, she doesn’t even try

    • Jo

Outstanding idea for a campaign, Del.
FREE TONY! FREE TONY! FREE TONY!
Ken, of course she’ll be there next week. And the week after and the week after. Having no talent does not guarantee that she won’t walk away with the disco ball trophy.

    • lcw

      Agreed. FREE TONY!!!!!FREE TONY!!!!!FREE TONY!!!!!

Anyone contact the Vatican to see if we can get him sainthood for dealing with this witch?

      • erf

LMAO to your comment about the Vatican! FREE TONY! :)

  • Jill

Who is voting for her? Is there some sort of Vote for the Worst-Dancer of All Time website out there? Also, I don’t understand why the judges keep throwing 5′s at her. With her horrible attitude, lack of talent, and can’t do spirit why don’t they give her a few 1′s and 2′s so she can finally pack her bags and head home to her 8 lil’ friends…or as most mom’s call the little ones that they care for…CHILDREN!

    • Kathy

I would give her 1 and only because I would have to give her a real score. She doesn’t call them children because to her they are meal tickets for her ride to fame.

    • Camilia

@Jill…I agree MOST moms – which she’s NOT! She’s rarely cares for them, her eight little “friend’s” life-lines are the five nannies. Kate is too too busy in front of the camera, Leno, People, etc etc. Why does Social Service not intervene?

      • Wilma

You put the lime in the coconut and drink the artilce up.

  • mary e

If ABC lets this nonsense continue they are really putting their credibility on the line. The others really try. Not Kate. She has it coming to her.

  • Kathy

Kate is the most disgusting human. She is self-centered, loves a pity party as long as it is all for her, and couldn’t dance to save her life. She is so manipulative with her blatant pleas for votes. Poor Tony. He deserves a halo for having to put up with the witch. Please vote her out! It would be a favor to Tony and the rest of the viewing audience.

    • TG

AMEN Kathy! You hit the nail on the head.

    • Cindy

Thing is, she might be able to dance if she TRIED! She just dosen’t try. When Tony told her to do the swim, I could not believe it when she said “Why”, who cares why? Just do it and try!

  • Pat

    Who’s voting for her???????
Maybe next year Toni will get a break. Hope so he is very talented and deserves a chance at least to win.

    • TG

Phyllis on the next page is one of the whak-a-doodles voting for her. She actually thinks Tony should be fired!

    • chattypatra

Actually, part of the blame must go to George Lopez. He has been asking his audience to please keep her on the show so he can make fun of her. He even created a website for it!

    • Anna

I thought the reason she’s so tired is all the on air groveling she did last week on every entertainment show that would have her.

    • kross

Believe me..there are plenty of fruitcakes out there that think she’s all that.

    • Brenda Barrett

As others have pointed out, Tony had great partners in Stacey and Melissa. Part of the reason he’s never won is because of his lackluster choreography. That said, who doesn’t feel sorry for the poor guy this season?

      • Donna

I stopped watching DWTS for a few seasons because I felt the pairs of pros and stars were unfair. For example, the judges love Derek Hough as a choreographer so they paired him with Nicole this year. I feel that’s an unfiar advantage because she’s such an experienced dancer placed with the best pro/choreographer. Just think if they had put Kate with Derek! That would have been more interesting to watch. Still feel Nicole shouldn’t have been cast, too much dancing experience!

  • Allie

well kate might win if they keep staying in the competition. if you don’t like, don’t watch. it’s not hard to change the channel. obviously people are voting for her because she’s still in the competition! if people keep voting for her she’ll stay in the competition. if people stop voting she’ll go home. it’s not rocket science.

    • Anon

People want to watch a show they enjoy, why should they stop because of one person? Or stop commenting on something they feel strongly about?
Kate is getting some votes from fans, more votes from viewers who want to see just how bad she can be. She’s the train wreck you can’t look away from- too bad better dancers are going to pay the price.

      • Allie

then just change the channel when kate is on and turn it back after she’s done

      • Anon

        Uh…no.

      • Tom

Yeah, because Allie doesn’t like your negativity and the world revolves around Allie and Allie doesn’t want to read things that Allie doesn’t like, so….HEY – maybe Allie should read another blog!

    • Patti

I have been watching DwtS since the beginning, and I still watch it to enjoy everyone’s performances, except for Kate. She is neither a good dancer (like Evan and Nicole), nor does she have a lot of charm (like Ochocinco). I wish Kate would be eliminated already, but apparently, she’s good for TV ratings! People like watching train wrecks?

  • bobbi

if Katatonic Kate is SUCH a “wonderful” mother – why is she never in the same state with them?????? go home kate

    • haterofkate

Ha. By not ever being with them she IS being a good mother.

      • graciegal

        bingo!

  • Terry Edwards

Tony deserves the mirror ball trophy for having to put up with that whiny, manipulative idiot.

    • kross

lol…now I see why Jon left that heifer!

  • Katherine

The longer she stays in the competition, the more people see how horrible she is!

Did anyone else notice that when Bruno was telling Kate whats what, no one in the audience booed? Usually people will boo when a celeb is getting harshly critiqued. Also, no one clapped at all while Kate and Tony performed. (well, why should they?)

I can’t believe how Kate doesn’t even try! Is that a good example for her kids? I think she feels she is going to be saved by all her crazy fans so she doesn’t put out any more effort than she has to. How arrogant is that? Are you Kate fans going to reward her for her bratty, entitled attitude? She is no saint people! Tony confirmed that tonight!!

So let’s say Kate goes home tomorrow night. Who are we going to blog about then? You have to admit she has stirred up a lot of controversy. It’s like we all have to watch every week to see how really bad she’s going to be. That has got to be good for the show’s ratings.
