Alan Ball talks about new 'True Blood' comic-book series

True Blood will become a comic-book series this summer. IDW Publishing and HBO have announced the July release of True Blood as an ongoing comic with storylines that will be faithful to the mythology of the hit TV series but “different from” the show’s story lines. The TV show’s creator Alan Ball had this message for fans at this week’s WonderCon:

This sounds like a cool project. With artists such as David Messina (Angel) and J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl) drawing, the True Blood comic has a good chance to capture the show’s combination of sexiness and menace. Ball and show writers such as Elisabeth Finch and Kate Barnow will work with writers David Tischman and Mariah Heuhner, among others, on the scripts. (No mention of any Charlaine Harris involvement.)

The comics will include all of the show’s major characters, from Sookie to Bill to Lafayette.

I’ll give it a try. Wish there would be a LOST comic book!

    • Considering the amount of hanging chads that show has . . .

      That’s not a bad idea.

True Blood is great, even if it deviates from the Sookie Stackhouse books. But I’m leery about this expanding farther beyond Harris’s vision for the characters.

I’m thrilled with this idea! I love stories that move from format to format. Very exciting.

Yet another way to extend the franchise. I think producers should wait til the show is off the air before doing something like this

  • Wasn’t there a character . . .

That wouldn’t have survived the adaptation to TV, at least according to Alan Ball? It might be way to get him into the universe of the show.

I love the idea and can’t wait to check out the comics. Hope they’re as good as the show.

Seriously? Wow. I just don’t want to see the Sookie story spread too thin. Books and a TV show. What more could we ask? Let’s not kill a good thing.

Guess their determined to strike while the property is still hot.

So now, there will be three versions of each story: Charlaine Harris’ novel, Alan Ball’s True Blood TV series, and Alan Ball’s True Blood comic book. It will be interesting to see the differences between the three versions.

Since the HBO TV series has been so successful, I would expect HBO would increase the budget for future seasons; and that would allow Alan Ball to do more elaborate things that he could not afford to do in the first season of True Blood, such as destroying a pyramid-shaped hotel.

      WOO go Sookie and Barry!

  • Erin.

I’m not really interested in anything that Charlaine Harris does not contribute to, the TV show already strays to far from the books.

That seems interesting… especially if Alan Ball is involved.

  • Jeremy

and it too has declared that it is bisexual!

If the comic series is like an expanded universe type thing that doesn’t affect the show, I’m fine with it. I just don’t want to HAVE to read the comic. I don’t want something to happen in the comics that has a major impact on events in the show. I just don’t have the extra time to invest. Just my opinion.

  • I’ll pass…

I’d rather have more episodes of the TV show.
