'Fringe' recap: 'Brown Betty,' and Watching the detectives

Fringe has been so good lately that the news that it would program a musical number in keeping with Fox’s theme-week had me ready to be irritated, and parodies of hardboiled detective fiction rarely work well on TV.

So I give Fringe a lot of credit for pulling off this hour so cleverly. The episode title, “Brown Betty,” took its name from READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' staged its own 'Intervention' in 'Crippled Summer' last night

As usual for South Park after it airs a few high-profile media-baiting episodes, last night’s edition was a smaller-scale riot. As extended, deft parody of an episode of A&E’s Intervention, it told the tale of Towelie, that READ FULL STORY »

Sharon Stone on 'Law & Order: SVU' review: Fire, but no sparks

Sharon Stone began her four-episode guest-star turn on Law & Order: SVU in an episode filled with such clunky dialogue and improbable details that by the end, she seemed like a “special victim” herself.

Stone played ADA Jo Marlowe, and how unlikely is it that, with READ FULL STORY »

'Sunset Daze' breaking news: Old people have sex, drink, and shoot guns!

It was big enough news to make the front page of The New York Times, but that just goes to show The Old Grey Lady is easily titillated: Last night’s two premiere episodes of Sunset Daze were — and I say this without condescension — sweet.

In this era of Jersey Shore and Real Housewife idiocy, sweetness READ FULL STORY »

Courtney Love on 'the Letterman years': 'I did a lot of coke, pills... I go to 12-step meetings'

Courtney Love appeared on The Late Show last night for the first time in six years. She blamed her long absence from the show on what she half-jokingly called “the Letterman years.” She recounted a bleak time when “I did a lot of coke back then… I took pills…. I’ve been a rock person for a long time,” she admitted.

Love said she’d gone into rehab soon after her 2004 Letterman appearance, during which she imitated Drew Barrymore’s famous READ FULL STORY »

'The Good Wife' recap: Exceeding 'South Park' with a Prophet Muhammad subplot. Plus, Alicia to Peter: 'It's over'

The Good Wife came roaring back last night with another plot-packed hour. The courtroom case involved a settlement for the death of a newspaper editor who died in an explosion supposedly set by a militant group protesting the paper’s publication of a cartoon depicting READ FULL STORY »

Should kids be vaccinated? 'Frontline' and science say 'yes'; Jenny McCarthy and a lot of selfish Gen X'ers say 'no'

Tonight on Frontline, “The Vaccine War” presents both sides of the controversy over whether young children should be vaccinated for diseases such as measles and polio, and in a rare display of TV-news common sense and independence, one side is shown to be — sorry — wrong. READ FULL STORY »

Letterman won't let Leno off the hook re Conan: 'He says, 'We both got screwed'? Jay, you got your old show back!'

“He’s a complete boob — he can’t help himself,” said David Letterman about his old pal Jay Leno on The Late Show last night. As for the criticism and ridicule Leno has been subjected to since regaining The Tonight Show, Letterman said flatly, “He got what he deserved.”

'Chuck Versus The Honeymooners' recap: 'I vow to quit the spy life'

Chuck returned last night with an hour that felt like a reward for both its fans and its two main characters. After three weeks away, the series showed us what’s been going on while Chuck and Sarah have been in a European train sleeping-car (well, some of it could only be implied, but you put Yvonne Strahovski in a negligee, and you pretty much know what’s going on). Turns out that between the sheets and endless room-service orders, they were READ FULL STORY »

Do you really think Gabourey Sidibe didn't do a good job hosting 'Saturday Night Live'? I disagree, and here's why

I’m pretty surprised at how many of you seem to think Gabourey Sidibe did a poor job hosting SNL this week. Sure, she flubbed a few lines here and there, as at the start of this sketch:

But as I said in my SNL recap, many of the sketches this week were dense with wordplay. I thought it was pretty obvious that Sidibe’s minor line-reading mistakes lessened quickly as the evening proceeded. Her acting and timing were READ FULL STORY »
