Today it was announced that Craig Ferguson has won a Peabody Award, the most prestigious award bestowed for, as they put it, “broadcasting excellence in news and entertainment.”
Ferguson won for a specific episode, his March 2009 interview with Bishop Desmond Tutu. It figures that a serious award would go to an edition of The Late Late Show that was pretty serious, but the truth is, Ferguson’s “broadcasting excellence” also extends to when he’s conducting other, lighter one-on-one interviews, such as his Stephen Fry chat-fest, or simply when he’s monkeying around withe the conventions of the late-night talk-show. No one is matching the guy for inventiveness, silliness, probity, wit, and the sheer range of his curiosity.
Among the other winners were Glee, Modern Family, and In Treatment. Yay to all of those, and you can read a complete list of winners here.
But a special congrats to Ferguson; long may his Robot Skeleton Army thrive and continue to claim fresh souls for the eventual takeover of the world! (I think I just scared all the Peabody winners from PBS and NPR… )

I couldn’t agree more! Go Craig and robot skeletons everywhere! Why are they called that? Because it sounds cool of course!
No applause, hobos
We only do it for the candy and cheesy snacks
No, they’re called that because it’s *awesome*!
Really?
So, so glad other people love Craig as much as I do!
Congrats to the best host on latenight
Congrats to the best host on at ANY time of the day!!!!
Who deserved a Peabody Award more than Craig Ferguson? Ken Tucker, maybe. From ‘The Good Wife,’ to ‘Justified’ to Craig, your taste is always spot-on.
ITA, except for when he ruins the Hulu Best in Show contest by totally throwing the votes off. Lame.
Val, what are you referring to? The fact that he wrote the bits on each of the shows? Is that how you think he threw votes off? Or was there something else I missed?
Ken’s vote counted for 25% of the total amount of votes. So basically, his pick would always win, which is laaaaaaaaame. Here ya go… linkage http://blog.hulu.com/2010/03/29/best-in-show-the-final-matchup/
Reply to CC: According to Hulu, Tucker’s vote counts as 25% of the entire vote (or something like that, I’m tired and lazy to figure out the exact process). Either way, he can alter the winner’s pretty easily. No blame on him really, its all on Hulu.
That Hulu vote is a bunch of crap! Half of the good shows were gone by the second round. Pffft! So wrong.
That really di*ked Psych didnt it
I couldn’t agree more. His taste in tv programming is impeccable.
He deserves it, I saw the interview & it was great!
This is exciting news. Craig deserves this award and more. All of his interviews are great. The most brilliant and funniest man on TV. He forces me to lose sleep because I need to watch every night.
yep, i seriously lose sleep during the week because of craig’s show.
so do (yawn) I But, boy is he worth it!!
Clearly, the Peabody committee was intimidated by his robot skeleton army and the prospect of angry hoboes descending on the University of Georgia. Congratulations, Craig!
Angry naked paid hoboes
It’s a great day for America everybody!!!
Thanks for the good news Ken ♥ !
You are a ‘genius’–you took the very words out of my mouth!! Definitely a Great Day!! Thanks Ken. Craig is the best; proud to be a member of the Robot Skeleton Army, Cougar Division.
I’m so happy Craig and his team were recognized. Very well deserved!
I recently started watching Craig, and I have to say that he is hilarious. I didn’t really know who he was, but his accent caught my ear. Within minutes of my first viewing, I was laughing hysterically. Now. his is the only late night show that I watch.
ditto here. Now the only tv show I make a point to see.
Hope you win an emmy too Craig!
Wow those really are 4 deserving winners!
Well deserved. Craig is brilliant.
Craig’s the best!
Hope this award can lead to better ratings for Craig. Fallon’s OK, but Ferguson is the most original, inventive guy in late night. CBS is darn lucky to have him, hope they realize that.
No, stevex, we don’t want CBS to realize what they’ve got with Craig-or they might actually force him to behave in a manner befiting the Tiffany network. The horror! Let them live in ignorance so we can continue to enjoy Wavy Rancheros, the Spanish word of the day, gay komodo dragons, Salvador Dali, ad infinitum…
Completely agree. If they know what they got they end up asking him to clean up the act to attract a more “mainstream” audience. Or move him to an earlier time slot and thus he would have to change. His show as it is, is worth falling asleep at work.
