In a quietly remarkable piece of television, David Letterman interviewed Tea Party member Pam Stout on last night’s Late Show. Read the full post.

Wow, the hits just keep on coming. Repeating right wing talking points is rampant in many posts here such as “government takeover of healthcare.” What government takeover of healthcare. Regulating an out of control industry whatever its ilk is not a takeover. Founding fathers realized when setting up the government that there are always detractors who will not go along with any program regardless of how many are actually helped. Detractors may rant and rail against government but most will be first to benefit from the same programs they are against. How many tea party activists are recipients of Medicare or Social Security? I suggest that it is hypocritical to stand against something that in which you participate. You don’t like government sliding into socialism? Fine. Decline your Medicare insurance. Mail back your Social Security checks. Otherwise, STFU. Comprende?

Hey jimimosey, it’s you that needs to STFU, comprende? Medicare are Social Security are not socialist programs. Every person that works in this county pays money out of each paycheck that goes specifically to their medicare and social security. The government just holds it and administers it. And they can’t even do that right because both are bankrupt.

Well RickJM, Now you’ve kinda just jump’t us into Clinton speak. Ya kind’a force us ta ask ya what yer definition of is, is. Just what is yer meanin’ a socialism, or, Socialism? When I went ta school, lo those many eons ago, a social program was one that dealt with, or tried to deal with either a great number of people, the majority of the people, or all the people. And socialism (small ‘s’) was a philosophy or group of ideas that looked at and or worked with how one would do that for the benefit of the individual members of the group. A socialist was one who practiced those ideas. Seems to me Social Security, and Medicare are social programs. All those who pay into and get benefits out of those programs are then socialists, by definition. So, again, just what exactly is your is, WHAT do you mean by Socialism? Because you like or dislike how something works has no bearing on what it is or isn’t. Do you know what you mean? Can you explain it?

I love how when the Liberals/Left wingers disagree with the Conservatives/right wingers they attack them on their beliefs and call them racist, then they CRY when the right wingers call them tree huggers and or closet socialist. When will the name calling stop? Just because a person disagrees with ones beliefs, not always NOT based on facts because most beliefs come from facts, they stoop to name calling. I personally respect the tea party, I respect anyone who wants to protect our freedoms and help us keep more of our hard earned money in our pocket. Some of these liberals need to re read history and familiarize themselves with the declaration of independence and lets see how far off they realize the Obama administration is from actually respecting that document and the American people.

I continue to be disgusted with our inability as a nation to have a civil conversation about politics. On both sides of the fence, nothing but name calling and distorted truths. People don’t even bother to check their facts before citing hearsay as evidence for their position. The number of blatantly false “facts” listed above to support both sides of this argument is overwhelming. People need to take a step back, find unbiased sources of information, and remember that we are all human beings deserving of respect no matter what we believe.

As I skimmed through a goodly section of the commentary on this article, I am struck, and it hurts alittle, by the fact that most of the comments are positional, in favor of a side or view, and not responsive. The question that was asked was not which side do you favor or view do you support. It was why we getting real discussions from comedians and satirists, for as little time as we get them, and not from corporate media?
There is an obvious answer to this question, which is, of course, they are corporate media. Still, while that’s the quick and easy answer. It may not be the only one, or the right one. So why is the only place we find these sessions is on ‘Comedy’ shows?

I’m a democrat, but I don’t totally embrace all of Obama’s policies. However, I do think that this Health Care bill is a step in the right direction. No policy of this magnitude ever gets it right immediately, but it is a start. As far as the assassination talk, I think it is especially frightening because this country has a scary track record of killing off prominent black men who shake up the status quo. I think a lot of people on both sides are afraid for different reasons…and unfortunately, the American way of dealing with fear all too often is to kill the person causing you fear. I think the problem with the Tea Party movement is that it has become the all inclusive voice of all dissenters of the current administration, even though all those voices have decidedly different points of view.

Two points: 1) I completely disagree that the healthcare bill is a step in the right direction, rather it is one huge step in a series of steps moving healthcare in the wrong direction, for reasons too complex to explain here. 2) I’m a Tea Partier, and the only thing I ever heard a Tea Party person say about assassination of Obama, is that they would personally take a bullet to stop such an action, if possible. Assassination of Obama would be horrible for the Tea Party movement and conservatives in general, as it would turn him into a hero, ala JFK. Let his policies play out, and it will be shown how wrong he is.

Glad that you’ve noticed, Mr. Tucker. Fascinating interview indeed. Segments like this remind you of how top-notch and adept a host Letterman is. Now, I’d like to see him interview the people of the Coffee Party, and I am not kidding.

  • KAH

One of the “highest tax structures?” If by high, you mean ridiculously low compared to every other industrialized nation, then sure. These tea party people keep proving how ill-informed they are every time they open their mouth.

Maybe the NYT’s and Dave will interview someone from the Coffee Party (www.coffeepartyusa.com). Read about them at huffingtonpost.com.

Hallelujah! Maybe I can start watching Letterman again. He could do the country a great service by giving the Tea Party a way to portray who we really are, versus what the liberal media tries to smear us with. Who could disagree with what we advocate – fiscal sanity so our children have a chance at a decent future? As Chairperson of the Arapahoe Tea Party, I would like to point out that our mission statement is, “Holding both parties accountable” There should be no such thing as a “Tea Party candidate” We are not a political party. We are sick of nasty, unethical politics regardless of which party engages in it.

You could definitely see your expertise in the paintings you write. The arena hopes for even more passionate writers such as you who aren’t afraid to mention how they believe. At all times go after your heart.

You really make it seem so easy along with your presentation however I to find this matter to be really something which I believe I’d by no means understand. It sort of feels too complex and very wide for me. I’m taking a look ahead for your subsequent put up, I’ll try to get the hang of it!
