“This quote is so true. In many ways Maher is everything he himself states that he opposes. Smug self righteousness.”

In keeping with his audience, I guess.

Nice misdirection…forget the children. Don’t look at the crime. Look that the people commenting on the crime.

    SHAME!

What is it with “we must hear two sides of the story”?
No, just give us the facts to back up your decision and we will agree or question it. If you don’t agree, do your own research!
We don’t have to be spoon fed everything we hear (unless you watch fox). I think they are still working on the bottle and haven’t graduated to the spoon…

In a recent post, Andrew Sullivan linked to an “Onion” piece in which higher-ups in the Catholic Church urged forgiveness of the sexually abused children for tempting the priests to rape and molestation. This is unfortunately so close to the actual reality of the situation as to not be all that amusing. Father Murphy raped 200 deaf children (many in the Confessional) and he was unrepentant. He didn’t face criminal prosecution, he wasn’t tried and defrocked, he was buried with full priestly honors, and then-Cardinal Ratzinger had oversight (in a “the buck stops with me sense”) over the situation. The pedophilia is horrible, and the institutional secrecy, denial and cover-ups only compound it. I don’t think the Pope should resign, I think he should publicly acknowledge his own deep complicity in this matter, as well as the sins of the church.

There is nothing good to be said about the Catholic Church or any delusional religious organization.

How many hospitals has the church started, opps i guess your wrong,10s of 1000s in jusT the U.S.

Does anyone think that these pieces of crap so called priest joined the catholic church’s all over the world for one reason and one reason only, they are pedophiles and new that becoming priest would allow them close contact with children and that 99% of the time if they got busted the catholic church would cover it up and they could get away with it,Maher and Hitchens have every right to gloat about these a-holes who prey on children under the guise of God, It’s camp pedophile and I hope they rot.

I think it is more complicated than that, twilly. From everything I’ve read, the Catholic Church’s immature and unrealistic teachings on human sexuality have, in the past, lead young men who were troubled by their own sexuality to think they could hide in the church, and that taking a vow of celibacy would be all they needed to resist temptation. Then they get into the church and are exposed to a culture where these issues are covered up, or where there is plenty of hypocrisy (priests cohabiting with their housekeepers or with nuns for instance) and they find that there are no consequences for giving in to temptation. As Andrew Sullivan has said on the Daily Dish, a lot of these men who join the priesthood are about 12 years old, in terms of emotional maturity, themselves. The problem, IMO, is the institutional corruption and secrecy, and the backwards teaching on human sexuality.

This handfull of sex abusers in the church are bad, but of the over a billion catholics you only focus on the bad ones, the church has done more good in the world than anybody other group. How many hospitals have they started.10s of 1000s

I remember Bill Maher saying that he did believe in God, but not in religion.

  • renee

the catholic church has condemed homosexuality(among adults) premarital sex(among adults)there is a slew of sins that can get you excumunicated from the church…but the child abuse gets you a change of venue!!

So the bible is a man made fake.Other than it sounds dumb to you, what proof do you have that it is.History,psy.,archaeology,lit.,and science have not found one err in the bible, written over 2000 years only God could have inspired it.ALL THE SCIENTIFIC evidence proves it to be true. There is NO proof for evolution.Did they find the missing link,no.does the fossil record show evolution, no, none.A HANDFULL of rel. people are bad, but how many hospitals has the church started in the world,10s of 1000s.Churches GIVE BILLIONS TO THE poor every year around the world. They do more good in the world than any other group. They are not mostly evil, but mostly good. There are 1000s of books by authors with PH.Ds in science,Donald e. Chittik phd.in chemistry to start,Josh McDowell grad. of talbot and wheaton coll.as of 1990 spoken in over 800 universities to more than 7 million people on facts and evidence for the bible and God.But you will not want to read any real facts that disagree with your man made theory. You have decided what is right no matter what the truth is.

Both Hitchens and Maher are trash products of a sick culture. I remind everyone that the Catholic Church has been an epicenter of Christianity and will continue to be long after the memories of bugs like Hitchens and Maher shall vanish.

  • Steve

Maher does not hate God, he hates organized religions just like I do. Even if a great and benevolent God existed, does anyone seriously believe he(it) would have anything to do with organizations such as the RC ?… !!
As another comedian put it “I´m giving my money to Jesus when I meet him”.
Bottom line – by all means contemplate the existence of God or anything else in the universe, but please cut out the agencies. If you believe in a higher order, you should not have to talk to anybody about it. Least of all the Catholic church.
