For those unfamiliar with the laconic tone of Elmore Leonard’s storytelling, last night’s second episode of Justified served as a primer. The hour began with a quiet scene: Timothy Olyphant’s Rayland Givens visiting the hospital bedside of the man he shot last week, Walton Goggins’ Boyd Crowder. Boyd told our U.S. Marshal hero that, while recovering form the wound, he’s rediscovered his faith and has been “born again.” We’ll see how long that lasts.
At some point during the hour, Raylan and his colleague Tim Gutterson (Jacob Pitts), a sharpshooter whom we learned trained in the Afghan war, were advancing upon a house containing hostages and guns. Raylan was of a mind to plan strategy.
“You got a story for our Dupree?” he asked Tim about the man inside with a gun.
Fingering his rifle, Tim said, “Yeah: If he moves, I shoot him.”
“That’s a good story,” said Raylan.
Another victory for Elmore Leonard-style narrative: low-key but tense, funny only up to the point where Tim had to put a bullet inĀ Dupree.
How wonderful it was that Justified scored big ratings for its premiere last week, because the series is only going to get better, readers. We’re going to learn a little more about Raylan’s law-enforcement colleagues, and we’ll piece together bits of Raylan’s past and why he is, as his ex said last week, an angry man behind his cool demeanor.
In the meantime, only Justified could use Raylan’s big white cowboy hat as the unifying theme of the hour. Where it went, how it vanished and reappeared where it belongs, took us through an hour of laconic storytelling and the most clenched wit on TV.

So far they’re 2 for 2. Olyphant is the man.
I agree! I had no intention of watching this show but tivo’d it at the last minute because I had room, and the premiere kind of stayed with me the whole week after I watched it. Most shows I watch and then don’t think about again until about two minutes before I watch the next episode, but with this one I was longing for number two. Olyphant has greatly improved from Scream 2. And I love a grown-up show that’s such a joy to watch.
I suspect he’s an angry man because his ex-wife is now humping his father. Just a hunch, but I know that would make me pretty angry. Not to mention the fact that his dad is a complete loser. I love this show so much. It’s almost up there with Sons of Anarchy, and climbing fast.
that’s not his father. That’s just some dude. His dad’s a convict — whether an “ex” convict or a current convict we haven’t been told yet.
I like the show… but wished it wasn’t on opposite of Southland. Damn the good drama gods!
Catch Justified at 11 – repeats right after =)
We should watch Southland at its scheduled time and hit up Justified afterwards; the more viewers we can get for Southland, the better. We need more than 6 eps for this season!
Agreed, DT, that is the way to do it. I love both these shows.
Doubly agree! SOuthland is a show of superb quality and Justified is getting there as well… I think that FX is pleased and will bring Justified back, but we need to make sure that TNT will do the same with Southland.
First!
Justified is justifiably awesome!
Oh stop with all the first stuff. It’s lame whether or not you actually are first.
I’m loving it!
fantastic show.
I love when people say first and they aren’t seeing as how claiming first is lame to begin with…but I digress…
This show is great. I’ve always been a fan of Olyphant’s to begin with so when he did Damages I was in love but now…so good!
I also have to say that I LOVE how FX seems to have a loyalty to actors.
I love this show! I agree though with Southland and The Good Wife being on the same time its gonna get harder. Thanks to Cbs for having a rerun laast night.
Loving it SO much. Glad you love it, too, Ken. Between this, ‘Lost’ and ‘The Good Wife,’ Tuesday is the best night on television. Now if only ‘American Idol’ could pick up the pace …
Andy — Are you hacking my Tivo? I bet you liked “The Shield” too, didn’t you?
Do enjoy it–look forward to more good tidbits from Elmore Leonard. Do wish they’d have some actual footage of Kentucky–it’s a beautiful state (disclosure, I live in Lexington).
Ninth! Wow, even lamer.
I am also irritated that Justified and Southland air at the same time. More irritated that Southland only going to be able six episodes.
Justified repeats each new episode later the same night – so if you set your DVR’s or watch; either way, no one has to miss Southland or Justified.
Love Love Love this show and as I said before have always loved Timothy Olyphant!!!
Love the show and am glad I now get to see Timothy Olyphant on a weekly basis, I’ve been a fan for a long time…
Love the show! Also, was that Pam from True Blood in last night’s episode who played Cooper’s ex-wife (her name is escaping me) or am I confusing two different actresses?
No you’re right. It was Pam (Bauer is the actress’ last name). It was great to see her!
Yes, love Pam! It was quite a pleasant surprise.
