Kara predicts male 'Idol' winner, sings 'New York, New York'

Last night on The Tonight Show, American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi predicted a male winner for this season, nuzzled with guest Terry Bradshaw (the official Bad Sight Of The Night), and confirmed that her father would today announce a New York Senate run.

And Leno played some tape of her singing, when she was “eight or nine” years old.

Even then she was over-emoting, wasn’t she?

When Leno brought up her “bikini moment” (making sure to show us a picture), Kara’s response seemed to betray the influence of sitting near British judge Simon Cowell in her phrasing. “It showed I could kinda take the piss out of myself,” she said.

Jay looked a bit baffled and moved right on. Prodding her for more Idol opinions, she said, “Michael, I love him.”

Since I watch Idol with one eye and one ear closed at all times, you tell me: Was this an important bit of info? What did you think of Kara’s Tonight Show appearance?

First of all, I don’t think the judges should be allowed to say who they think we’ll win. Although some think Kara is clueless, the judges as a whole carry a lot of power. And honestly, if Mike wins (unless he improves a lot), I’m completely done with the show.

    • darclyte

They ALL picked Adam, and ALL picked a Danny/Adam final and tried everything to make both of those things happen. Look how that turned out.

    • KC

Kara just admitted to some magazine that she thinks her “bikini moment” saved her place on the show.
      Too bad.

    • Sally in Chicago

I agree with this. Idol judges take liberties where other judges don’t. Look at the DWTS — do those judges predict who will win? Or AGT?
It’s okay to say “a boy or a girl”….but she’s going to be proved wrong in the end.

    • Niix Starkyller

That’s funny. I don’t think she ‘predicted’ who would win at all. She merely answered by saying who she thought was currently making the strongest showing. And when she mentioned Mike (in response to Jay’s question at the end) she also immediately continued with Crystal, and seemed she may say another name or two but Jay cut her off to finish the segment.

So, yeah, misleading article title, EW. It’s only entertainment but nonetheless let’s get some accuracy with the reporting, shall we?

      • Ziggy

Thank you, Niix! I agree, it seems as though Ken Tucker’s summary was written to evoke our comments, instead of summing up the actual interview correctly. I don’t think he watched the same one as we did…They didn’t even cut to Jay looking baffled and “moving on”.

      • Mark

I totally agree. This article is very misleading:
Jay looked a bit baffled and moved right on. Prodding her for more Idol opinions, she said, “Michael, I love him.”
He did not look baffled, and they spoke about it a bit longer. Also she was naming people she liked, not who would win. Plus, she did follow up with “Crystal” and seemed to be saying another name as well.

      • Shel

What a surprise. Ken, making up something unflattering to say about Leno. I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked!! *sigh*

    • Allie

i agree with niix. she just said that she thought a guy would win this season and that she loved michael, not that she thought he would win. pay more attention larry.

    • Amy

I’m not sure there’s going to be any winner this year. I think the show finale will have all the judges on the stage waving goodbye. This year is the worst — BY FAR. Simon knew this. Smart guy.

      • Tara

I agree with you, Amy. I find myself cringing at a lot of the performances.

  • darclyte

As much as it pains me to write this, Kara often has had the best comments for the singers. Her criticisms have been on more than not. How did THAT happen? She still botches easy things, like saying a contestant sang one song when they sang something else, but she’s been right more than not. She’s still annoying and AI still doesn’t need 4 judges. Maybe when Simon leaves they will return to only 3 judges.

    • Al

No question, she’s gotten better this year. Simon’s still the best judge, though.

    • Elizabeth

She needs to just offer the comment and quit trying to formulate some clever wrapping to put it in. I’d value her opinion a little more if she was to the point and simple about it.

      • Gata

Ditto what you said…this is what makes me dislike her so…I still have to mute her after the first critique. She tries to stretch it soooo much.

I think her crying last week had a lot to do with the fact that Ellen mistakenly went and hugged Tim, so Kara needed to take the ‘scene back’ aka the “bikini moment”…she is just not a good fit.

    • kay

how can anybody say that kara is great as judge???? “Sorry sweetie, it was all wrong” who does she think she is??? I didn’t LOVE paula, but at least she had some respect to the contestant as a human being. Simon’s case, it is already his character that giving everybody harsh comment, that is kinda his JOB, so it is OK but Kara??? What is she trying to do, to be next Simon next year? eeeeeew

      • anonymous

sorry, sweetie, you’ve used up your quota of question marks for the week. please comment again next week.

      • Pat from Houston

Kara IS great as a judge. Of the four, she knows more than anyone. You do realize she’s written or co-written hundreds of songs, many of them #1 hits for all sorts of artists. Just take a look at her website and you’ll see what a fantastic bio she has. Plus she’s a wonderful singer. When she calls a contestant “sweetie” she’s not being sarcastic or mean. She genuinely likes the kids and wants them to do well. You people give me a pain constantly bitching about her. Do your research. AI is lucky to have Kara.

    • Sally in Chicago

I would like to see three judges and a rotation for the 3rd judge. in other words, during the auditions, one judge (i.e. Paula), and then during Hollywood week then can bring in Ellen or whoever the heck they want. 4 is too much. I like Randy myself, because he has a keen eye for talent and an ear for sound.

    • Rebekah

Thank you. I feel Kara has vastly improved this year as a judge, too. It makes me wish they hadn’t hired Ellen, so we could stick to the 3-judge format. Though, I do sort of wish that Paula was stil around.

  • Peggy

If a guy wins Idol this year, that will be a real travesty. Of course, Kara likes the guys. She would do anything to get one of them to win.

    • BobDob

The real problem is the AI voting audience is filled with female tween power voters who vote for the guy that makes them the most horny. Unless every male is musically weak or the “cute” ones get eliminated early when votes are split, it will always skew towards male winners. The only way they can fix this is by making a more sensible voting policy in which everyone gets an equal say, not just those who can fanatically spend hours on the phone.

      • catmom

        agree

      • Sally in Chicago

Or do like DWTS and allow the judges to have 1/2 the vote.

      • anna

Allowing only 1 vote per phone line would help a lot of this.

      • UM

Actually, the real voting power is in the South, not with the “tween texters”….6 of the 8 winners of Idol have come from the South and staistics showed that people from the South are more likeyl – uo to 16% more likely – to watch the show ; thus voting more as well.

      • Flower

OR the one that cries and makes them feel sorry for them.

    • Cori

      female tween power voters

Try middle-aged frauen power voters sweetie. They hold the power. Andrew Garcia over Alex Lambert is the perfect example.

      • Flower

Hey! I am middle-aged and Alex was the only one I liked on the male side. We have brains. We can figure out that Andrew only has one schtick. And NO, whining teens don’t do much for me either. I have whining children at home already. I only want to find the artist that has the MUSIC that will make me want to download and listen to.

  • lionsfan

Kara looked absolutely STUNNING last night, the only thing that ruined it was watching Bradshaw fawn all over her.

    • anon

Yes, she did look great–better without all that makeup and more understated clothes. Though that long fake hair piece in back is distracting…

    • Shereen

I didn’t see it, but why does she always look so awful on AI? She surely has access to stylists and make up people.

  • Summer

Is Kara even WATCHING this season or is she too busy trying to get Simon’s attention? I don’t think I’ve seen a guy be in tune a whole song yet! Meanwhile the girls have Crystal, Siobahn, Lacey and Didi!

    • NoMoreSummer

Are you serious…Lacey?? I don’t get that one! Did you not hear 2 out of 3 of her performances?? The 3rd only being slightly ok because it wasn’t as bad as the 1st or 2nd.

      • Summer

Yes, Lacey…she is the one who had the amazing rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the top 50 results show. I don’t recall them ever having a contestant provide the backing track to something like that before…it was that good. I really liked The Story last week, thought it was right in her zone. I do not think she is the strongest contestant, but she is stronger than most of the guys, and Katie and Paige. It’s really cool your name is NoMore, though!

      • TK

Oh my dear Summer, you are so wrong! Lacey will NOT last long, mark my words. Also to state that none of the men have been in tune? I have a pair of hearing aids that you can have, my dead grandma won’t need them but apparently YOU do!

      • cat

Agree with NoMoreSummer 100%. All of Lacey’s performances (IMO) sucked. The absolute worst of the whole voting season was her “Landslide”. It was horrible.

  • Stacey

I don’t think Kara wields a lot of power with the fans. So it’s probably bad if she states her opinion. Michael is good; but not winner material. I think she was told to even the playing field since it’s been heavily in the media that this is the girls’ year. So even if it’s a lie; to try to even the playing field. If Simon said Michael had a shot; I would believe him. But he said it of Crystal. And I personally believe if it’s not Crystal. It’s Siobhan!

  • Sam

Of COURSE a guy is going to win. “American Idol” voting is controlled by teenaged girls, middle-aged housewives, and gay men. It will come down to two “hot guys” like last year and the year before.

    • catmom

agree, again (and I am a middle aged housewife – though not much of a voter)

    • jessiesk

but what do you do when there are no hot guys? Come on look at those guys, none of them have that “do me” look

      • Rebekah

I know. Where are the Michael Johnses, the David Cooks, the Kris Allens, and the Adam Lamberts? So sad. I mean, that Tim Urban kid is cute but also tone-deaf. Not a lovely combination.

      • JINSANJOSE

You don’t remember David Cook, Kris Allen & Adam Lambert. You must have blinders on and can’t hear

    • don’twatchJay

Oh – Have you heard that they are bringing some hot guys on?!

    • cat

SAM: there is not even ONE hot guy! So why are you even remotely interested in Idol???

  • waya

Sheesh, Fox is really promoting the dreadful and hurl-worthy Kara lately. I think its obvious now that she plays favorites. Fire her, PLEASE!

  • Firecat

When I watched her last night, I thought she just said that she liked Michael (and Crystal)…..I don’t think she suggested that he (or any other guy) would win the show. Unless that happened after the commercial break.

    • TK

I love Crystal but if Simon really favors her, then he needs to tone down on his compliments of her. He did that to Adam Lambert and look where THAT got him. Wait…..he is outselling the Idol winner so maybe Simon knows what he is doing!!! :)

  • allie

Maybe now people can stop complaining that Bowersox is being over pimped.

  • Sue

A guy winning???? Seriously??? Let the judges pick who they think will win because they never do. Archuleta…nope. Adam….nope. Heck, they loved Danny Gokey *gag*.

    • Rebekah

Ugh. Let’s try as best as possible to forget the Gokey debacle. I never understood what they saw in him.

  • Lee Chesnut

Kara is pretty much the only judge that offers the contestants actionable advice. When she’s forced to deliver a negative critique, she follows it up with ways they can improve… sort of like a homework assignment. It’s like she’s actually rooting for them to get better.

    • Dorrit

Too bad it is usually the opposite advice of another more credible judge. There are too many judges> please fire Kara and teach Randy to speak.

  • sara

Kara is an imbocile. Who cares what she blathers?

  • pancakes

Kara didn’t predict anything. She merely said she liked Michael. But she said this after saying earlier that he made her cry with his performance. She was just reiterating that she thinks he’s a good singer. She spent more time talking about Lilly. But I did like how she fit in a plug for Coke.

    • steve

agreed, i thought i was the only one that noticed she didn’t actually predict anything… and that was the whole reason i watched the clip. wtf.

      • Ken Tucker

Yes, she did predict a male victory–it was after the break (not in this clip), Leno squeezed in the question to her just before introducing Ziggy Marley.
