This week’s Chuck, directed by star Zachary Levi, was a bold one for a series based on keeping secrets and keeping things light. The night began with Morgan “firing” Chuck as his best friend, since the latter had become so elusive and unavailable. Morgan just wants to hang out, eat Subway subs (which made their first appearance of the season here, I do believe), and play video games, like the pals used to. Chuck has to use his Intersect at new levels since he’s now a full-fledged agent. Other shows could keep these two together as cheerful chums for a long time, but Chuck likes to tinker with its genre… and with us.
And so the big reveal this week was that Morgan found out not only that beneath the Buy More is a CIA/NSA base of operations (Joshua Gomez’s jaw-dropped reaction to seeing the seemingly football-field-sized underground spy sprawl was some fine comic acting), but also that Chuck is a spy. Or as Chuck put it, “I’m a spy, buddy.” And Morgan’s great response? “My best friend a spy?… This is the best news ever!”
The episode took title its title, “Chuck Versus The Beard,” from the bearded Morgan’s suggestion that Sarah, as Chuck’s handler, has been his “beard” — that is, someone only posing as his girlfriend, and not the real thing. (The fact that a “beard” frequently refers to a gay man posing as the straight companion for a woman only made Chuck and Morgan’s close friendship an all the more amusing comparison.) This notion of Chuck-as-beard set off the evening’s other development, as Chuck, coming off his fling with Hannah, declared last night, “I do love Sarah!” As in, he doesn’t care who knows it, he’s (re-)staking his claim on her, and hoping she reciprocates.
But of course, earlier on, Chuck had moaned that he was no longer “flashing” his Intersect abilities because “my emotions mess up the Intersect,” and his emotions are never more rattled than when grappling with his Sarah fixation. Shaw told him he was “benched”: No flashing, no spying. And so you could look at this episode as the one in which Chuck pulled himself together: By admitting his secret life to his best friend and his eternal feelings to his best girl, he was able to make the mental/emotional breakthrough that had been eluding him the past few weeks.
The result was a slam-bang action scene (nimbly directed by Levi) with Chuck dispatching a Ring crew led by an excellent Deidrich Bader.
A couple of final observations:
• I’m very curious as to how Devon’s inability to keep his secret knowledge about Chuck from Ellie is going to play out with his suggestion that the married couple leave the country and join Doctors Without Borders. I don’t want to lose those two, even for a few budget-saving weeks, do you?

I think the voice on the phone was Chuck’s dad, Scott Bakula. And bring back Diedrich Baeder!
I don’t want to spoil it but they made a casting announcement for who it is so if you want to know you could look that up
yeah the voice is not chuck’s dad but a bad ass guest who i am very much looking forward to!
badass = correct adjective to describe guest star
Don’t buy that it’s Chuck’s dad, but agree 100% about Dietrich Bader. My only complaint is that there wasn’t enough of him!
I didn’t look it up but the voice sounded to me like Daniel Banzali.
I was also curious as to whether Awesome & Ellie were being written out. Also, the teaser with Casey was concerning. I hope we are not losing him as well. The show just wouldn’t be the same.
I agree: love all 3 characters. Would be a shame to lose Awesome, just after he has had such great comic acting to do this seasomn, proving he is more than just another pretty face and abs. But the show ALSO keeps showing us his pretty face and abs, so we get to have our cake and eat it too! Which is one of the best things about Chuck, in all aspects it is geared to fans — it’s a show to geek out to, and it makes me laugh every week (and even applaud during the weekly a**-kicking scenes!) Viva Chuck.
The only reason to put Devon and Ellie on vacation would be to shoot a movie about Captain America and Wonder Woman. I would cast Sarah Lancaster as Wonder Woman in a heartbeat. But do NOT write them out!
Michael Auseillio put it best when he said, “Moving away does not mean leaving the show.” We might not $ee them (budget) for an episode but I’m betting The Ring goes aftem them in Africa requiring Chuck to channel Mighty Mouse and say, “Here I come to save the day!
Somewhat, I think. There is a limited budget, and that’s why you won’t see some characters from time to time. I thought the Africa plot device was a good one.
I agree Gary. Also waiting for his mom’s appearance as head of the Ring!
That would push the Bartowski-Bristow comparisons over the edge. Let’s hope they don’t go in that direction.
The voice on the phone is Robert Patrick, confirmed guest star and previous the Governator opponent.
Listen to the score when Casey answers the phone at the end of the episode. It sounds like it came from Terminator 2.
Chuck’s best quality is the fact that is never too comfortable with its own status quo. Perhaps it’s because the lower ratings allow it to move the plots along quicker than on other shows, but it definitely makes this show a must-watch. It allows for the show to have Devon and Morgan find out about Chuck’s secret, whereas on another show, maybe they would never find out and we’d just get a procedural of Chuck fighting a new mission every week. Long live Chuck!
Age six sounds about right. They had been friends since before age 11 at the minimum, since that was when Chuck and Ellie’s mother left, and Morgan was there to help him through it. Since he graduated high school in 1999, he would be 28 or 29 right now. Sarah is one year older (she graduated in 1998), and they still haven’t said Casey’s age, although mid-to-late 40′s sounds about right.
I believe Chuck was turning 25 or 26 in the first episode…
Of the first season? Then that would make sense. 25 + 3 years of spying = 28.
Chuck and Morgan have been friends since they were in 1st. grade(Maybe kindergarten.)when Chuck rescued Morgan from the bullies.
Check out the page at NBC – 22 reasons to trust Morgan – from Chuck’s notes…
Not only gives some funny insights – it also sets their ages.
Way to go Zach on your director debut last night. It was awesome.
Chuck/Morgan -Bromance and revealing Chuck’s secret was excellent.
Poor Awesome, he’s so worried now I bet he’s cursing the day he found out about Chuck’s double life and he and Ellie may have to flee the country on account of it.
The Buy More uprising was hilarious, Casey finally made me fall in love with him when he said He wanted in. Just the delivery Adam Baldwin gave that whole scene was priceless. Speaking of Casey, ooh boy was that cliffhanger intense or what? Next week looks killer and that old battle axe General Beckman is back. Can’t wait already.
I watched last nights episode and all I could saw was ‘Chuck Me!!!” Levi did a great job directing the episode. Josh Gomez was hysterical as Mr. All American. But the best moment was Jeffrey helping Casey by using the chloriform on the Ring agent. Good to know what it takes for him to “take the edge off…”
I loved last night’s episode. The age thing adds up to me. They had been friends since they were kids, when Chuck an Ellie’s mom left. Morgan was the only one there. The stand at Buy More was so freaking hilarious! I was pleasantly surprised to see Morgan react the way he did when he found out Chuck is a spy. Looks like Devon and Ellie will be taking a hiatus from the show. For how long, I don’t know. However, Chuck has been able to rotate characters well, so it doesn’t bother me. I am really wondering who Casey was talking to on that ring phone?! A lot of his past is still in the dark, so this could be interesting. Well done directing, Zachary Levi!
I love this show, but I really am not a fan of Shaw, and I’m not sure if I’m supposed to not like him or not. I know we aren’t supposed to like him with Sarah but the guy i just find to be such a corporate guy (in the spy sense of course), he just irritates me
Surprisingly, I kinda like the character(s) of Shaw (and Hannah)even though they are supposed to be roadblocks in the road to Sarah & Chuck. Shaw, despite his feelings for Sarah seems to have only been professional and supportive in trying to get Chuck to be a genuine spy. Of course Shaw and Hannah are supposed to make Chuck and Sarah realize how much they mean to each other.
Chuck’s flashcards cracked me up!
Wow, a whole 8 comments? (now 9) This show really must have low ratings…
The article has also been up for about 10 minutes.
gtfo!
i laughed so much this episode mostly because of morgan. it was a really good episode. i especially liked jeff saving casey and casey’s reaction
”Peace out” me ”lol”:D
I really enjoyed this episode, great work by Josh Gomez – and of course, we got to see’Jeffster’ for first time this season!
I’m glad I wasn’t alone in my Jeffster love. As creepy and oft-annoying as Lester and Jeff are, I thoroughly enjoy Jeffster. Lots and lots.
Me too! I hate Jeff and Lester, (and I can never remember which guy is Jeff, and which guy is Lester) but Jeffster rocks!
I really loved the BuyMore Revolution. So many iconic poses – the hoisting of the flag…the kiss in victory. I sometimes find the BuyMore angle tedious…but this time it REALLY made me laugh..belly gut laugh. All in all a fantastic episode! I even loved seeing Jeffster – it was perfect for the epi.
Loved the Jeffster scene!
Jeffster doing Creedence = classic
The triumphant return of Jeffster!! I was thrilled to see them performing again.
Jeffster is AMAZING!!
This was a great episode Im glad I tuned in for it!!! I am a chuck fan for life now.
