Zach Galifianakis hosting 'Saturday Night Live' tonight: Are you ready for his 'skitches'?

The question that always hovers over every Saturday Night Live is, how will the host’s personality and style manifest itself on the show? In the case of Zach Galifianakis, that question is really intriguing. Anyone who’s seen ZG outside of his Hangover context knows that he likes to work the edges of eccentricity as a stand-up comic. He combines light zaniness with grizzly bear aggressiveness. These promos look very promising, don’t they?:

Galifianakis appeared on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week, and his remarks suggested he may be an excellent wild-card.

“I don’t have time to do spoofs!” he yelled in mock-anger when Fallon asked him how rehearsals were going. “Are you allowed to just walk off a skitch?” he asked. “Is it ‘skitch’ or ‘sketch’?”

That’s the kind of willful ignorance that could turn this week’s SNL into a real event.

What do you think?

Post your thoughts about tonight’s show here, and I’ll be back early tomorrow morning with a full recap; thanks.

I love him… this is the first time I’ve looked forward to seeing SNL in years.

At the musical guest now. The Obama opening sucked (as is to be expected). But after, this episode has been frackin hysterical. My cheeks hurt lol.

  • darclyte

It’ll either be hilariously cutting edge or a complete disaster.

    • GROWING PAINS FAN

I think disaster – they should get Bryan Cranston as host.

      • Carol Seaver

SNL is just unwatchable now, Last week I couldn’t get past the first 2 sketches – Jennifer Lopez was so bad and the sketches were so repetitive, I turned it off and don’t expect much here.

      • JaySin420

I don’t think it matters at all who the host is.

The cast is one of the best SNL has had in a long time and somehow the show is just awful.

    • LOL

Expectations are too high. I smell a let-down.

  • Steverinoo

After January Jones, the show can only get better.

    • mary

Ssh. If you don’t talk about it, it means that it never happened.

      Get on board, Stevie.

    • anna

There have been plenty of hosts since her.

  • Tom

Hopefully this will make NBC realize that the best way to make the show funnier is to have it be hosted by people who are actually funny (not Megan Fox)

    • Karl

The best way to make the show funnier is the writers doing their job, so the host would have funny stuff to say. It’s been a while since SNL was consistently funny… at least since the time Tina Fey was the head writer.

  • bilbo

hopefully his onscreen persona (which has carried over to these two clips) will be evident on the actual show, and not filtered through SNL glasses, and then the episode will be a classic

  • Farris Flagg

Last week’s show with J-LO was forgettable!!!!! Tonight’s show better be good.

  • TP

Who in the world is he??? They have had some of the worst, unfunny and disappointing “celebs” on SNL this season… I mean really… that dude from Third Rock from the Sun??? WHY? The musical acts have been the best part of the show… they’ve been spot on with them.

    • Jonsey

Joseph Gordon Levitt hasn’t been the dude from 3rd Rock from the Sun for years. A few years ago he was the dude from “Brick” and “The Lookout”. Now he is the dude from “(500) Days of Summer”. The hosts are actually relevant, even if they are out of your realm.

      • TP

Point taken. He still wasn’t funny on SNL. There are so many more “relevant” hosts to be had out there.

    • TP_is_a_fitting_name_4U

Who is he? Who are you? This guy has been THE “it” comic for about 2 years now besides the hardcore fanbase he’s (deservingly) had for YEARS since his late-night vh1 show years ago, his stand-up specials, dvd, tours, appearances on other shows, etc etc etc. Even your parents probably know what “The Hangover” is for that matter.

      • TP

Oh, don’t get your panties in a bunch. I SAW The Hangover… and it’s the first (and last) time I ever saw this guy. Didn’t realize he has such a rabid fan base out there. Trust me, if he was such an “IT” comic I would know who he was when I saw his name and not because of the one movie he’s been in. Hoping for a good SNL for a change… if he’s as good as you claim maybe I won’t be disappointed yet again!

  • alvaral11

I love him since he appeared on Fiona Apple’s “Not About Love” video, cant wait 4 the show!!

  • wp2012

This guys is as funny as 12 year old blind girl suffering from cancer…

    • John A

heh that’s funny…she’s blind but she can’t see the tumors…or is she blind because of the cancer as in oh no my eyes have fallen out.

    • Nick

      Which is, of course, hilarious!

  • Frank Anderson

I find myself hopeful for an SNL for the first time in a long while! His commercials for this ep are funnier than any SNL skitch I have seen all season.

  • jeff

Man, if you don’t know who Zach Galifianakis is by now you should stick with Leno and People magazine and by quite when the grownups are talking.

    • TP

I like Letterman (Leno is an idiot) and I am a grown up. And no, I don’t know who Zach (how do you even pronounce it) Galifianakis is. Let’s hope he’s good on SNL.

      • jango

You don’t know who he is, yet a comment 2 minutes earlier you say: “I SAW The Hangover… and it’s the first (and last) time I ever saw this guy.”

        Troll.

      • TP

Not a troll, Jango. Did not make the connection between who he is and the fact that he was in The Hangover until I saw it written here. Did not recognize him or his name even though I had seen the movie… so NO, I really don’t know who the guy is.

    • Nshi

@Jeff……….If you’re going to try to insult someone, at least spell it right! “…by quite when the grownups are talking”??? Come on!

  • Jon

Ken Tucker- I hate you so much. Please stop writing columns. If you like a TV show, I know it means I’ll hate it… because you suck!

    • Inner John

BLARG AM SO ANGRY, mad sounds at internetadlksfjd lafjsdlkjcklxj

    • jenn

      Just because you’re retarded.

  • downtown diva

Zach G. hosting + Vampire Weekend as musical guests= definitely will DVR and look forward to watching soon.

  • Kai

These promos just reminds me of the fact that we need more of will forte on SNL. Wiig does not need all that screen time.

  • writereadmore

The edges of eccentricity usually works in comedy!
