The CW's identity crisis: Are 'Supernatural' and 'Smallville' better than 'Gossip Girl' and '90210'?

Watching Smallville this week, I had a Zod-like epiphany. Read the full post.

Smallville and Supernatural are the best. I’ve enjoyed both shows for years

Considering this network basically exists because of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I don’t think it’s that crazy of an idea, Ken. But CW shouldn’t disregard what’s working for them now (teenage girls) and it seems very clear to me that they have more of a demographic “identity” than any of the other networks (besides CBS). My proposition: why can’t they be both? Teen soaps and genre shows. Variety is key.

I have to agree with most of what the writer stated in regards these shows. Supernatural is by far, the best thing on the CW. It is scary, funny, dramatic, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I am not sure about Smallville, as I have not watched in a while, but I’d rather watch paint dry than any of the 90210, Gossip Girl and all those shows of that ilk.

I have never seen Smallville so I cannot comment, it just isn’t my cup of tea. But I have recently been hooked on Supernatural; I think it is one of the best shows on TV.
Great writing, depth, good acting (especiall Jensen and Misha), humour. I think it is really overlooked and deserves more attention, but at least we are getting a sixth season.

90210 and Melrose Place…bug me. Gossip Girl does the same to a lesser extent. I don’t watch the Vampire Diaries regularly but I have seen a few episodes and they were well done, just for a younger audience than myself.

    Just my two cents.

hey, whatever CW do, is their business, really people they are tring to make their own network survive, and that include promoting c**** like 90210, MP etc…u all should be thankful that SPN, SV have been kept for so long, really if they wanted to pull the plug they would have done so…why should the CW change its identity to suit shows that are originally not who they are…they are so many male oriented shows out there, on almost all channels, is it so wrong to for females to have a Channels that caters for their needs…yeah we get that SV, VD & SPN have hot boys playing heros and fighting demons, villains etc…thats every boy’s dream isnt it…what about a girl’s dream??….or is she gonna wait forever for prince charming to come & serve her

I totally agree with this article. I love Supernatural and the Vampire Diaries. Those are the best shows on the CW. The shows and their actors deserve the respect and fame that those second rate shows receive. I

I have watched every single episode of Smallville and Supernatural and they are 2 of the best shows on television hands down…I will take Tom, Jensen and Jared anyday…Love them

I agree with this post. Although I’m not exactly a huge fan of Smallville (it went downhill after season five) or Supernatural, they are better quality shows than the trashy Gossip Girl, 90210, and all the other sleazy shows they have. If the CW wants to pull in better ratings, they need to start taking themselves seriously and stop giving their viewers cliquish, white-trash, poorly-written shows. The success of the Vampire Diaries should clue them into that. That show is arguably one of the best teen shows airing at the moment, and not because all the actors are hot–but because it’s also written well and provides some suspense. Those producers take their work seriously. It’s not about being scandalous or being horny.

CW–If you want a higher number of viewers, abandon the teen Soap Operas and move on to something better.
