Tiger Woods' media (non-)event Friday: Smart, cynical, or dumb?

So by now, there’s a full-on frenzy over what Tiger Woods will or won’t say at his five-minute Friday apology and press conference. Or rather, his press statement: He’s reportedly not taking any questions.

Which is why this is kind of a non-event. But that, of course, becomes an event in itself: Pundits everywhere, from Fox News to MSNBC, have slammed Woods in advance for not answering reporters’ questions. On the network side, ABC’s Good Morning America featured segments from co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos that did a solid job of examining the pros and cons, with interviews with sports and media analysts who said, basically, if Woods is doing this just so he can get on with his golf career, it’ll be perceived as a cynical, insincere move. I’m not at all sure about that.

Nightline last night also had this thorough summary of the quandary Woods faces:

That report concludes with the phrase, “Admit, apologize, and advance.”

As some of you have already commented, to whom does Woods need to apologize, except to his wife and family? And wouldn’t it be good if Woods just did “advance” — that is, simply got on with his job of playing golf, and not play any further into the frenzy?

He’s trying to rehab his career. He won’t change. His ego will not allow it. I’m bored with it all.

One thing I don’t understand about this is that all the porn stars he allegedly slept with are being called mistresses. Why are we afraid to call them prostitutes? Mistress implies some kind of relationship, rather than a one or two time hookup. You don’t even have to prove he paid to play – which he presumably did with the porn stars – they are by definition prostitutes. I don’t say this with hate either, it is just a fact.

    • Al

Prostitutes by definition are paid for sex. Tiger was getting the sex from that porn star and all the other girls for free. So by definition not prostitution.

      • TheObserver

However these girls shopped their stories around to any entertainment or media outlet that would pay them to be interviewed…not outright prostitution but definite fame-whoring (TLC had a special on this that was so….wow…just…wow)

    • Quirky

Wait, so are you saying that the waitresses that he slept with should also be considered hookers, or just the porn stars becuase they normally are paid for sex?

    • Tim

yes…but if these women were HOPING for payment…then they are still prostitutes. Just because payment was deferred doesn’t make it any less of a transaction.

      • clive

        that’s the stupidest dumb-ass thing I’ve ever read — if you’re hoping for payment then you’re a prostitute??? – GAWD — I’m hoping you’ll drop dead, so am I a murderer?

      • jackie

sometimes I hope my honey makes me a sandwich. so does that make me a ho?

  • Momo

He’s a horrible husband and a complete Dog. However, I’m glad he’s going back to golf.

  • Quirky

Tiger is just going to say the same prepackaged excuses everyone says in this situation (i.e. Clinton, Kobe, etc.) Nothing will be new. I’m more curious about what his wife Elin has to say.

    • Mike from Jersey Shore

Did somebody just say my name?!!??

Ahhh, yeah, front abs! Back abs! Face abs!!

      • Judge

        Random, but funny!

I agree with the concept that he doesn’t owe me (or anyone else on these boards) an apology. That should be reserved for his immediate family.

The thing that annoys me about this “press conference” is that this is a classic Tiger move. By all accounts, the guy (like many super-successful celebs) was an ego-maniacal control freak who believed he could get away with anything before this whole mess happened, and he appears to remain an ego-maniacal control freak to this day. What exactly is the point of hosting a “press conference” in which he doesn’t take any questions and is surrounded by “friends and reporters” he selected? (He could’ve posted whatever he’s going to say tomorrow on his Web site.) He’s simply doing this because he feels like he has to say SOMETHING before he can come back to the PGA Tour full-time.

It’s just his latest calculated move (just like going to sex rehab simply because it seemed like something people expected him to do) and it’s disappointing. I’d been a lot more impressed if he came out a bit humbled and said something like, “I got married too young, I made lots of mistakes and I’m sorry for embarrasing my wife and myself.”

Or, you know, something that actually made him seem like a human.

    • Janet

      Great response! Spot on.

    • Lala

      Agree completely!

    • Phil

You could actually wait and see what he says before passing judgment on him. Also, why should he take questions? He doesn’t have to answer to anyone.

  • Sam

If he was an average joe, then he does not need to apologize to anyone but his family. However, once you decide to make money off of your image, which includes behavior on and off the course, then you do need to apologize to your sponsors.

And when the image you are selling is one of wholesomeness that can be looked upon to increase your fan base (and therefore sell more of the products you endorse), then you need to apologize to those fans who liked you for your game AND your image that you helped create.

Now, I don’t think people should look to personalities/athletes as idols because you never really know these people, so your are really just idolizing the image that is being presented to you. And that is not reality.

But, he definitely should apologize. But, like others have said, I don’t think he is really going to change. He has a massive ego, and this ‘press conference’ does not show much humility – same old ‘my way or the highway.’ And that ego has allowed him to be the best golfer ever, which I think is the most important thing in his life.

It’s about time Tiger Woods spoke! Been waiting for 3 months to hear something from him. I’m sure that all or many eyes in the nation will be watching this event even logging on websites to find it.

  • Preston

He needs to apologize to his wife, his family and all the sponsors who dropped him that he upset as well as the several young women and mistresses he had been having affairs with. Tiger knows he made a mistake and needs to admit it NOW!

    • mishka girl

“He needs to apologize to his wife, his family”
I would stop there. The sponsors and the ho’s? Both were in for the cash! Once Tiger will be back on top, the sponsors will tiptoe their way in again! The ho’s enjoyed their 15 minutes of glory already, they can go back to their daily “job” now.
Good for Tiger to take care of his career, cheater or not, we all have bills to pay. People will forget about the BS, they always do.

  • Jill

At this point I really don’t care what he has to say. Unless he announces his retirement, then this conference won’t affect his golf. If he wants to come back, then come back. I also think he’s being forced to speak and so it probably won’t be very sincere. I’ve been watching golf since the new season started and I really don’t miss him much. It’s still exciting and interesting and the players are great. Why is everyone so hooked on this one guy?

    • April

Everyone’s hooked because the guy IS golf. He alone has made golf money and with him gone, golf is losing money. He’s the reason why there are more tournaments and why other golfers are making more money.

See how many times I used the word money…

  • April

Really, all of this is none of our business. He didn’t commit a crime. He’s not an elected official. He’s having a news conference to say that he cheated on his wife, something loads of men have done, are doing right now, and will continue to do until the end of time. And everyone saying bad things about him should stop talking to people altogether b/c I’m sure you know someone who’s cheated. Tiger just got caught.

He just happens to be Tiger Woods…I really hope everyone moves one from this.

  • SusanMarie

The guy is the best if not THEE best golfer of all time but I wish this media stuff would just go away. I don’t care what he does but the media and public just eat this stuff up as they do when an actress or actor goes awry. Let him play golf if he wants to but let the other stuff go (hopefully)

  • Censors

    Watch your language, Stacey!
    This isn’t NBC.

  • Shooter McGavin

Bring it on. I eat pieces of sh** like Tiger Woods for breakfast.
“You eat pieces of sh** for breakfast?”

    Umm….no!!!!!!!!!

    • smitty

Hey Shooter I hope you gargle and brush your teeth after breakfast.

    • smitty

hey Shooter, I hope you gargle and brush your teeth after breakfast

  • stephenkc

Media everywhere are slamming Woods for not taking questions, for his highly-controlled format. Yet, every media outlet in the world will carry his statement and run it for days. In other words, they’ll all complain about being manipulated, then immediately roll over for Woods and allow him, as always, to manipulate the press to his will. If media outlets are truly outraged, then do something bold like NOT REPORT on Woods’ self-serving statement. Ignore him. I’m not kidding.

  • vakamalua

Tiger Woods, SHUT UP and GO AWAY!
