Glenn Beck attacks Bill Nye the Science Guy: Rachel Maddow to the rescue

Glenn Beck’s swipe at Bill Nye the Science Guy, who apparently has the gall to believe there’s such a thing a global warming, did not Read the full post.

Whether you want to believe that Climate Change (Global Warming is a misnomer) exists or not, why is it such a bad thing to try to be more environmentally sound? The only reason I can see that conservatives have chosen to fight Climate Change is that they are funded by companies that would lose money if they were forced to make environmentally-friendly changes to their business practices. I don’t see how wanting to keep our planet around for a little longer is a bad thing. Recycling and driving fuel-efficient cars does not make you a “socialist”.

    • John

Fuel efficient cars are rolling coffins. I’ll drive my SUV over them and won’t feel a thing

  • John

More jib-jab from the Lib Labs. Get a life Madcow. You and your ilk are a disease and need to be elimated….

  • Mike

Oh ya – that “global warming is a fact” thing. No scandals to speak of. Maybe Mr. Tucker was on vacation the last few months.

  • Alyssa

Get rid of the narrow-minded everything black and white/ right or right or wrong Republicans on stupid Fox. Everyone on the Planet knows that channel is the most biased on tv. Take NO heart Rush with you.

  • Alyssa

Oh and we arnt scared of you, I am not intimmidated by Republicans at all. I laugh at how stupid your ignorance is. Follow the cool-aid, and tea parties, pro-create like a bunch of dogs. Palin, Bush, yeah you run with such a scary crowd- wow I just shiver with fear.

    • jd

Hey Alyssa…your beloved Democratic party is crashing and burning right before your very eyes just like MSNBC and all the other liberal news organizations. You must be so proud of groups like Acorn and planned parenthood and our wonderful articulate President who doesn’t even know how to pronounce corpsman correctly

      • miss k

Alyssa and jd are prime examples of why nothing is getting done in Congress. The hate between these two parties is pathetic and ridiculous.

      • Andrea

Are you really going get on to Obama about pronunciation? Ask Bush to pronounce nuclear or just about every Middle Eastern country and dignitary.

  • megan

Wow, lots of anger going back and forth on this one, which is weird because it is a scientific issue, not a moral debate… As a meteorologist, I recommend everyone google the words “IPCC summary for policy makers” and read the first pdf you see (it’s the documetn the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gives to the politicians to break it down). This represents the consensus out there on climate change… not the extremists on either side who reach conclusions first and then get the facts to back them up.

I can’t believe Rachel Maddow just spent 10 minutes trying to discredit Glenn Beck….ha, ha, making her look a whole lot like Keith Olbermann in the process. Does MSNBC really think attacking competitors for a quarter of their show increases ratings? “Dude, you did, alot…” Holy cow, how many times can you say that in 8 minutes? No wonder MSNBC’s ratings are in the dumps, no one wants to watch jealous, self loathing anchors. And to close, how ridiculous was Rachel’s argument in this clip, she essentially proved Glenn’s arguement for him.

    • Chris

No one could do a better job of discrediting Beck than Beck himself. He performs that simple task daily. She said the “dude” quote once, Einstein. The clip of it was replayed. Typical Fox viewer holding steady on the low end of the seesaw. And if you seriously believe she validated his argument, you’ve apparently seen only Beck’s edited version of the back and forth. Carry on …baaaa.

All you have to do is think for yourself for a minute. Glenn Beck says one storm does not prove global warming is real or not real. He says it is based on trends. He’s made his position clear. He can maintain that position and still say that God is pouring down record cold weather to throw it in the face of people lying about global warming. Her other clips were even weaker. That is not the same as saying this storm is the evidence there is no global warming.

    • Matthew

      Hear, hear.

Understanding this, though, requires one to spend more than 5 minutes researching the subject- or listen to more than one side of the argument.

~75% of people, on both side of the ideological aisle, won’t do that.

    • Matthew

Actually Glenn Beck has several times said one storm disproves global warming. And so have Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly.

It’s all right there in the Maddow piece.

I’ve said time and time again that the worst thing you can do to a conservative is record and playback the stupid things they say.

      • Chris

Exactly. MSNBC along with, surprisingly, many staunchly conservative newspapers are lately ripping repugs over their ridiculously hypocritical stands regarding the stimulus bill and … well, virtually everything else that emanates from their pie holes.

  • Matthew

Beck chronicles the whole thing on his website here:

    http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/198/36432/

    Of note:

-Maddow accuses Beck of hiding “evidence” because he edits it in his video blog. Anyone who knows Beck’s modus operandi knows that he jokes- a lot. Her pieces of “evidence” were all jokes of Becks’- cutting the “evidence” out was due to time restraint (I’m guessing). It doesn’t even matter, because it’s not the same kind of editing- done to twist the argument- that her show did, because her evidence doesn’t support her case at all.

-I wish Beck would have told off his fans that supposedly send Maddow death threats (do they really? I don’t know- she obviously is missing something crucial in this whole escapade (like context) or is a bald-faced liar, so her record isn’t stellar).

-The comment that sparked this entire affair- that disagreeing with climate change is “unpatriotic”- is so technocratic that anyone who actually believes that doesn’t understand the nature of real patriotism. Including Bill Nye, the Science Guy-with-a-degree-in-mechanical-engineering.

By the way, Nye cites the IPCC’s receipt of the Nobel Prize as a major argument in the favor of global warming. Maybe he isn’t aware that the Peace Prize isn’t given for scientific merit, or even doing anything substantial anymore (2009 recipient, anyone?).

-We should all remember that the Earth warms and cools with the years. We should all realize that comprehensive, expensive legislation based on debated, nascent science is profoundly stupid.

  • hecowe

The snowstorms are NOT an indication that global warming doesn’t exist.

That the people who have been claiming it, rubber-stamping it, promoting it and selling it (google “Phil Jones BBC”) say there’s been no warming for 15 years and have lost their “proof” (it must be in their other pants) proves that global warming doesn’t exist.

Honestly — no one in America has a BS detector anymore.

    • Matthew

Yeah, totally, one guy proves that global warming doesn’t exist.

      One guy.

      Out of how many scientists?

  • Dan Cummings

Nye has drunk the global warming kool-aid and when some techies believe something they won’t let facts get in their way. Maddow hosts a show on a network with rapidly declining audience numbers. Folks, read the evidence. The global warming crowd faked data, dumped data that didn’t support their thesis, and conspired to discredit those who were doing what all good scientists do — be skeptical about claims and seek corroborating evidence, whether pro or con. If you want to read a good selection of stories in world press on this for past two months, go to http://www.NewsWatchCanada.ca/climategate.html For example, there is only one temp measurement station in Canadian north now, but formerly there were 30. Most Canadian data comes from southernmost parts of country, the world’s second largest with much of the world’s arctic landmass and longest arctic coastline. And the temp measurement stations are located mostly near cities where temps are always higher due to heat sink phenomenon. This isn’t a ‘he said/she said’ argument, this is about what the data said, whether the data was gathered at the same places each time, whether data was invented and/or cherry-picked, and what the data means. Some, perhaps many, of these scientists feel compelled to support global warming so as to maintain their government funding levels. Now, Phil Jones, at heart of ‘climategate’ admits there has been no global warming since 1995. He told that to the BBC last week… Read the evidence uncovered by Pyjamas media on how NASA hid data for two years and then released it on New Year’s Eve at last possible moment… It’s all about objective data, not subjective selection of data… Beck is right. Nye is just one more pseudo-scientist who now can no longer be believed on anything else he says.

    http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/mandias/global_warming/global_cooling.html

There has been and is not global cooling. 20 of the warmest years on record have occurred in the past 25 years. The warmest year globally was 2005 with the years 2009, 2007, 2006, 2003, 2002, and 1998 all tied for 2nd within statistical certainty. (Hansen et al., 2010) The warmest decade has been the 2000s, and each of the past three decades has been warmer than the decade before and each set records at their end. solar activity has been very low in the second half of the 2000s yet temperatures are still higher than the previous few decades. 2009 was the 2nd warmest year on record while the sun was at its weakest in over 100 years!

  • Scott Mandia

Wow I mangled that first sentence!

  • zweener

Let’s be honest here, cable news is a pile of turd and Fox News is the biggest chunk of corn.

    • Lala

That is the most intelligent thing I’ve read on here thus far. Kudos!

  • kdsfjsd

if he doesn’t matter to her…then why did she devote half her show to complain about him?
