'Smallville: Absolute Justice' review: Clunky, or funky fun?

Smallville‘s two-hour “event,” the introduction of the Justice Society of America to the world of Tom Welling’s Clark Kent, was alternately endearingly clunky and just Read the full post.

The reason its ratings were up is because people who tuned out early this year like me, tuned back in to see if the episode was worth the hype. It wasn’t! I’m sorry but I think Michael Shanks is great and I dig the mythology of the JSA but I’m still not over how badly the writers botched the Doomsday storyline. Also, while I used to love Smallville, its been 9 years already. Shouldn’t he become Superman before we all age anymore?

I agree, and I’ve been a lifelong Superman fan and avid viewer of “Smallville.” But even I’m starting to lose my patience. 99% of the show doesn’t even take place in “Smallville” anymore, so they should just change the title to “Lois And Clark: The Early Daily Planet Years” or “The Green Arrow” since so much of the show has focused on him lately!

Well you’re right about some of the special effects being clunky but they are working with a very limited budget and set so I’m still amazed at what they can pull off.

I have to agree that I didn’t think this episode was the greatest. I am an avid superhero fan and fan of Smallville but this episode somehow fell a little short for me. It did feel a tad clunky and a lot of times, cheesey and hoakey.

ON SMALLVILLE ABSOLUTE JUSTIVE — They did an awesome job!! CW should/must proceed with a tenth season and slowly introduce / transition to a JSA/JLA/Legion series the”Silver Age”. Yes the “Star Girl’s” character was annoying and she is supposed to be… her character is based after a 15/16 year old. This episode had implications of the return of Lex Luthor, a Hawk Man arc with the reincarnation if Sha’ira “Hawk Girl” where she denies their love to keep both of them alive, a Dr. Fate arc finding the new worthy one, a Green Arrow & Hawk Man Team up arc with Hawk Mans Cheesy out of date lines and Green Arrows humorous comebacks, a New Green Lantern arc about passing the ring to a new successor, a Sandman successor arc, a New Flash arc where Bart is mentored by the old flash, Martian Man Hunter Jon-Jonz arc about Mars, Clark Learns to Fly arc with the help of his cousin Super Girl Kara-El, crossovers to introduce Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince “Wonder Woman” in the Smallville world, an arc of Chloe “Watch Tower” locating the surviving Society/League members, and the introduction of Darkseid “Aka the coming Apocalypse” (King of Apokolips) as stated by Amanda Waller’s character. I say move-on with this Kandorian plot and move-on to DC hero mythology or fuse them together to create super villains with less-than powerful Kandorians as they are all clones and cannot fully gain all the powers of a true Kryptonian (Aka Kal-EL and Kara-EL), and then bring on the “King of Apokolips” Darkseid. All these Episodes should have a Louis and Clark love story incorporated or have Clark save or be saved by these characters.

Thanks for spoiling Supernatural for me you wankers!

As far as Smallville goes…I do not like how they arbitrarily kill off these heroes. They need to stop milking this cow, and get Superman. Clark Kent is boring the crap out of me.

    I LOVED the show!

That shot of Dr. Fate looking into Clark’s future with the Superman cape was the same shot used in an earlier season of smallville with someone else with powers looking into his future. I remember that much…

    • bkwurm1

Hereafter was the name of the episode.

I liked the ‘movie’ event. Nice to see the sparks between Chloe and Ollie.

Absolute Justice was an absolute disappointment. It felt like it was a different show, for the sole purpose of promoting JSA comics, instead of an episode of Smallville. Clark Kent was again reduced to being a guest star on his own show, with the emphasis on random guest stars.

Please put the focus back on Clark. This is NOT the JLA or the JSA show! The writers haven’t finished telling the story of Clark yet. Yes, Clark is one of the leaders of the JLA in the future, but he is mostly a lone hero. Clark doesn’t need a sidekick! The entire cast of DC characters can be paraded across the TV screen, but that doesn’t make up for the lack of focus on Clark or the lack of progress in his story.

Geoff Johns is a talented comics writer, but this is Smallville! And it would be nice if he would focus on writing for Clark first and foremost.

The two-hour “event” for Smallville should have been the upcoming episode with Martha Kent and Perry White, with Clark as the focus. That would have made more sense for long-term Smallville viewers.

If the writers don’t want to provide any type of payoff for long-term Clark Kent fans who watch the show, then please end it already and try your various spin-off shows!

Until Clark stops being a cold strangely dark character on his own show, no one is going to WANT to write for him. The character is seriously messed up right now. I hate, hate, hate the black Matrix outfit and his habit of tagging the city with the Supes symbol. So messed up! Clark really does deserve a character fix so he can get back to normal and be worthy of watching again.

Hey Bkwurm! I recognize your name from TWOP. Glad to see that you’ve found another site to bash the show on! It’s funny because right now I’m thinking of Brian Austin Green’s awesome suggestion back in September that we start a website where all we do is post the horrible and nasty things that you people say over there about the producers and the actors and make our own site where all we do is make fun of you. Sounds like a good idea to me. I’ve read enough of the venom that you spout on a regular basis to know that you cannot possibly view this show objectively anymore. Go back to TWOP. You people are a laughing stock in the Smallville fandom.

Actually, I think Clark has come off very well this year. He’s finally being heroic and proactive and taking an active stance in protecting the ciy. He seems happier than ever in his relationship with Lois and he’s finally calling people out on their shit and not acting like a doormat. The reason he leaves the Supes symbol all over the city is to inspire hope and let people know that they aren’t alone and from what we’ve seen so far this season I’d say it’s working…the people have hope again. They know he’s there. Now, I agree that the black suit and the symbol are not going to be the right choices for him forever. He’s on a learning path righ tnow and soon I think he’ll learn that he needs some color and that instead of leaving the symbol to inspire hope—he needs to show his face. But frankly, I’ve found Clark to be the most watchable and admirable this season in YEARS. That being said, I understand where Scarlett is coming from with her complaints. This show is about Clark’s journey. He is the star of the show. It does seem sometimes that the producers forget that he is the star. I understand why Scarlett wanted to see Clark more in the 2 hour movie. That being said, I thought clark came off very well in the movie. He was humble and gracious with Hawkman and Dr. Fate and you can tell that he has accepted his eventual fate as savior with a calm grace that he lacked several years ago. He’s not running from his future now. He’s embracing it head on. He knows that his destiny is to protect people and he seems to finally recognize that his lift partner is in Lois. Those are good and positive developments for him. Now, my hope is that the producers keep him the HERO And the focus for the rest of the reason. This is his journey and I want to see it play out in full.

I think Clark has been more likable and admirable this season than he’s been in about 6 years. I think he leaves his symbol around the city to inspire hope. I love Clark this year. More than I have in a long long time. I just want to see more of him. ::shrugs::

I gave up on this show years ago because it was so predictable and whenever something of significance happened, it was undone. But I gave this one a chance & glad I did. It was great to see superheroes in actual COSTUMES since they seem to avoid them so much on this show. Dr. Fate’s helmet was great. Hard to see Sandman killed off so quickly, though. Bad acting on Pam Grier’s part. Clark should’ve unleashed more. And the slow motion climatic fight scene looked cheap.

  • D. Coop

I was very happy with the entire two hours.
They “tipped the hat” to so many events and characters that I lost count!
    Very well done.
This ain’t no X-Thang movie… but, it is some of the best I have seen on TV for a long time!
Star’s mask should have been smaller, and Clark could have taken out the “Icicle Fate” with his bare hands.
    Hawkman was perfect.
    No “flapping” wings.
    Great attitude.
    Well done.

  • Mark

The clip they used where Dr. Fate sees Clark’s future (red cape flying in space) is the same one they used in a season 3 episode where a meteor-freak brushed up against Clark in the school hallway and saw his future! Is the budget so low now that they have to reuse old clips??

  • jvek

smallville died once they took smallville outta the show and moved it to metropolis. they shoulda stuck with like the college years or something. Too many super powered dudes n the show now its getting out of hand and smallville lost its concept.

  • T

I want to see a “JSA” series on the tube with all those great heroes especially Mr. Terriffic II (Michael Holt) from the Pre-Flashpoint era and Wildcat (Ted Grant) and Hawkman (Carter Hall) makes the most interesting characters on the illustrated page.
