Sure, you could say Kimmel was shilling for ABC product in having Lost producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof as his guests last night. Except for the fact that Kimmel is obviously really into the show and really knows his stuff. When Kimmel started asking Lost questions I thought they were going to be all jokes (some of them were: “True or false: The smoke monster represents our reliance on foreign oil?”).
But many of them weren’t. He got some real info. I guess here I’ll say for the faint-hearted: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.)
Framing his queries as “coincidence or fate” questions, Kimmel asked things such as, “As soon as we see Charlie, Desmond disappears.” (Coincidence, said Cuse and Lindelof.)
“Michael and Walt were not on the plane.” That was “fate,” said the men:
It’s also a measure of how into the show Kimmel audience was that when Cuse said it was no coincidence that the meal served on the plane was not just lasagna, but “vegetarian lasagna,” there were hearty laughs all around. But when the producers said that it was “significant” that Jack has one less mini-bottle of vodka on the plane than he did in the pilot, there were actually murmurs and “Ooooh“s of delight from the crowd.
The producers were admirably loose and forthcoming. When Cuse casually SPOILED, “As you saw tonight, John Locke is the smoke monster,” there were groans from the studio crowd, which of course had not yet seen last night’s premiere at the time of Kimmel’s taping. “Oh, sorry,” said Cuse, cool as a cucumber. Cuse and Lindelof announced that the final Lost episode would air on May 23, followed the next week by a “Lost Bowl game,” said Cuse.
Meanwhile, the host spliced himself into last night’s Lost premiere, with the sort of dialogue we’d like to hear:
Oh, and because I can’t resist, I’m also including Jimmy’s commercial for a lawn-treatment item named after Pink and her Grammy performance. Order now and you get a Taylor Swiffer at no extra charge. You’re welcome:

So glad I DVRd jimmy last night.
The “vegetarian lasagna” thing was obviously a joke, but I think they were serious about the “one less bottle” part.
Well, yeah:
“But when the producers said that it was “significant” that Jack has one less mini-bottle of vodka on the plane than he did in the pilot, there were actually murmurs and “Ooooh“s of delight from the crowd.”
Why would the audience be “delighted” if that weren’t a sincere statement?
because the audience could minsinterpret it to be sincere when it wasn’t?

I am surprised this segment of Nightline from just before Kimmel wasn’t mentioned. EXCELLENT behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Carlton & Cuse. (Fast Forward to just after the first break)
what?! john locke is NOT the man in black???
I’m glad that someone else caught that.
ok i retake what i said. he’s not POSSESSED by the man in black. i’m hoping they are just picking their words carefully. ARGG!!
John Locke is dead. The Man in Black looks like Locke, but the real Locke is dead, so he can’t be ‘possessed’ by him. I think that’s what they meant.
But maybe MIB was just another Locke-type facade. A body washed up on the shore from the Black Rock that Smokey was able to use like Locke and maybe Christian. His conversation with Jacob still sounded like those bewteen Fake Locke and Jacob.
Of course Fake Locke is the MIB. The MIB is ALSO the smoke monster. I’ve thought that ever since MIB was introduced last season, and last night confirmed that. At least, that’s my take on it.
No, I think he is the man in black. They said John was not being “possessed” by MIB, because as we know, his dead body still exists untouched. MIB can, I believe, take any form. (including Christian Shepard in the pilot? discuss)
yeah cause there is fake locke (MIB) and dead/real locke (i.e, not possessed). i love this show.
What episode did we learn that the Man in Black can shape shift?? I need to re-watch it.
That was my response as well. I actually went to sleep thinking about that. How can he NOT bet the man in black?? I think Jimmy might of been right, because Damon and Carlton got a little nervous when Jimmy asked that question, because Jimmy also asked if Sayid was now Jacob. They both started shifting in their chairs and stuttering a little bit. If Locke isn’t the man in black, then WHO the hell is he???
I think of it like Locke’s answer to Jack about Christian- Locke is dead, it’s that the MiB is just taking his body.
The MIB is also the smoke monster that can take the form of dead people, like John Locke.
The MIB could not physically harm Jacob, but could get an actual person to harm him. Thus the bodyguards are to protect Jacob from the only thing that could physically harm him – people (not the MIB). I don’t think anyone (being the Others) counted on the MIB convincing an Other (Ben) to do his dirty work and kill Jacob. The Others were protecting Jacob from everyone except for the Others.
The MIB is not possessing dead bodies, but taking the form of dead people – a la the BIG BAD on Buffy.
What I thought was most interesting is that the MIB could not harm Jacob, but could beat the crud out of Richard.
Why does the Smoke Monster sweat?
Why did Jacob need body guards??
Do The Others shoot EVERYBODY on sight???
The statue is the Egyptian God Set. Set murdered his brother Osiris who then became the God of the Eygptian underworld. Man in black = Set, Jacob = Osiris??? Maybe?
The statue isn’t Set, it’s Tawaret. That’s been confirmed.
Confirmed by whom, Sara? Tawaret is Set’s concubine who is most always depicted as a naked and grossly pregnant hippo as she’s the goddess of fertility. Set on the otherhand is depicted as the statue seen in Lost. Someone has their mythology mixed up.
Or possibly the Egyptian God Sobek as he is the one depicted in carrying an Ankh in mythology. It’s not Tawaret – that’s just not how she’s depicted.
It was identified as a “variation of Taweret” on the pop-ups in an enhanced episode. This has been confirmed by both ABC and J.J. Abrams in multiple forums.
It’s Tawaret. It has been confirmed. They even said it in the enhanced episode of the season 5 finale last week.
Lillith, it has been repeatedly confirmed by the writers, by at least one cast member (Michael Emerson), and by the ‘pop ups’ in the enhanced episodes. Tawaret. Deal with it.
For info on the four-toed statue, check out this link:

Doc Jensen also did an article about it at some point, but I can’t remember when.
If Locke is not the MIB, why did Jacob intuit that he was, when he claimed “I guess you found your loophole”… the same thing MIB said during their confrontation at the season finale start, “Someday, I’m going to find a loophole and kill you.”
Also, if Locke ‘was’ the MIB, when he first reached the statue with Ben and Richard, he looked surprised and didn’t know why they had lead him there and even said something to that effect when they arrived at the statue to kill Jacob, Fake Locke was like, ‘What’s this?’ referring to the statue, when he should have known all along what it was since he and Jacob were sitting in front of it when the black rock came to the island.
…Or he was still manipulating and passing himself off as the ‘real’ Locke.
The guy that looks like Locke is the MIB, who is the Smoke Monster.
Or Maybe the MIB is possessed by someone else…
There is no doubt that the Man in Black was assuming John Locke’s form and prompted Ben to kill Jacob by also taking on the form of Alex and commanding it or he would be destroyed.
It was fairly obvious in the last season finale, and confirmed 100% true in the premiere. the only place where confusion might lie is the fact that the MiB isn’t ACTUALLY John Locke, nor is he taking up or possessing his dead corpse.. he is simply assuming his form.
And we know from interviews and podcasts that the Smoke Monster can take the form of black smoke, Medusa Spiders, Yemi, and apparenlty Alex and John Locke.
Perhaps he can also appear as Christian Shephard, or maybe that’s Jacob. It would seem though, that the MiB appearance would be his true human appearance.. as that’s how he looked with Jacob, who has not changed his visage in 150 years from the conversation with MiB to his death.
Did anyone watch FRAME BY FRAME Ben and Locke’s first visit to “Jacob’s shack”? Right when Ben’s thrown to the wall, the camera pans to the “empty” rocking chair and I THINK it’s either Christian or Richard Alpert in the rocking chair. Can anyone confirm??
Who is Richard Alpert? Locke/MIB said he was glad to see him not in chains anymore, why was he chained up before? Why is MIB pissed off at everyone?
I assume Richard was a slave on the Black Rock, which is why he would have been in chains.
I wondered the same about Richard. Also, is Richard now dead?
Not dead, just knocked out.
Yeah, can’t say for 100% sure, but that is the ruling theory on Alpert and has actually been for sometime even before last year’s finale. That he came over on the black rock.
Minor spoiler here.. but I believe Richard will be receiving his own episode in the 2nd half of the season, and it will involve where he came from, and chains and an old ass boat might just be included.
Does anyone else thing that Sayid was re-animated by the spirit of Jacob? This’ll set up a Locke/Sayid showdown at some point if true.
I would theorize that it would be quite a stretch. I don’t think we’ve ever actually seen anyone “possess” a corpse on the show, at least it hasn’t been confirmed. And why would Jacob place a big importance on keeping Sayid alive if he wanted to go into his body..
Remember, MiB didn’t go into Locke’s body as believed by some, he just shape-shifted into his appearence. If Jacob has the same ability, there’s no need for Sayid to die and then go Linda Blair on him.
Jacob was not hell bent on keeping Sayid “alive”, he wanted to “save” him. Which could mean a totally different thing.
Not the biggest stretch, in my opinion, since Sayid didn’t even speak in his “Iraqi” accent after being “killed into being revived”.
At the time of the scene, it seemed to me like Jack was going to revive him, like he did with Charlie and this special purpose on the island was his ability to “fix” people.. then it seemed like Sayid died and I questioned it.. but who knows, it could be MiB or Jacob or something in there.. I think I remember somewhere in the annals of the Lost-library section of my brain that at one point someone said bodies had to be buried, and it was very important..and I’ve always wondered why… maybe they can only get into people who are above ground. Smoke has been Locke, possibly Christian, and Alex.. all of whom were not buried on the island.
But what about Claire? Wasn’t she buried? And she appears to people too.
Claire was not buried. She walked off into the jungle with Christian and was later seen in Jacob’s cabin.
Of course, she was possibly killed during the mercenaries attack on Otherville (speculation)
Also Yemi..
yeah that’s pretty convincing now that I think about it. He’s taken the form of 3 people for sure, and possibly 4, and all of them died on the island and were not buried.
I remember this also. I think that it was Eko who mentioned that burial was important early in Season 2.
Reality, I think your recollection about burying bodies is correct. So, if that’s the case and they bury Locke’s corpse then Smokey can’t take his form anymore?
I think the story with Sayid will be that he is now officially an Other, and will find a purpose in that after learning more about their purpose. Perhaps Sayid being mistaken as an Other in the ’70s was a bit of foreshadowing. I don’t think he’s Jacob.
Oh wow, good point Kevin. I didn’t relate this to the fact that he was mistaken for an Other last season. Definitely could be some foreshadowing there.
Did anyone else get sad when Damon announced the FINAL end date for Lost?? I did. That’s only 4 months away!!
Ok, the leader’s translator at the temple asked about the spring,”Why isn’t the water clear?” When the guy cut his hand it didn’t heal. Didn’t he say something about the possible results of putting Sayid in????
Maybe they wanted Sayid to die. Jack, Kate, Hurley, etc. never saw what the letter said. The Others could’ve lied to them. The letter probably said not to heal Sayid or something.
The letter had each of the oceanic 6 with one of the 6 numbers corresponding to each. That’s why they asked first and last names of everyone. Locke’s name and number on the note has been scratched out.
