'Don't Commit Suicide On The Holidays': A new Christmas anthem?

Martin Short put in a “surprise” appearance on The Late Show last night, and debuted a new song that could become a holiday classic, don’t you think?:

I like the fact that Short worked in not only the predictable Tiger Woods and Bernie Madoff references, but also looked over at David Letterman and crooned, “Pappy, you had trouble too,” before advising us all not to “put your head in the Christmas oven.”

Pretty catchy, don’t you think?

I thought the song was hilarious! I’ve been watching this video all morning & can’t get enough of it! Definitely think this song is a classic, (for me anyways)

How I would love to spend the holidays with Letterman and Martin Short…

I thought it was pretty funny, but knowing many who have lost loved ones to suicide, I hope it doesn’t end up catching on a la Grandma got Run over by a reindeer – I mean, that song is funny simply because it’s implausible. The suicide song is a reality to many every year. Still, it was really, really funny :)

“Catch your friends off guard in May.” My favorite line.

Off topic…your screen name is the most EWWWWW inspiring one I’ve seen in quite some time…just saying

Brilliantly funny. But cue the outrage! from some group or highly emotional person in 5,4,3…

I do not find Martin Short’s brand of humor to be remotely funny. He is way too manic and over the top ALL THE TIME!

I agree. I don’t think he’s funny and the older he gets, the more desperate he is to get a laugh. I saw him on Letterman a year or two ago (one of the very few times I’ve watched Letterman this century) and couldn’t believe how unfunny he was. I guess some people like his brand of humor but I’m not one of them.

Just to clarify my previous comment – I am not outraged by this performance. I just don’t think Martin Short has much range.

Well, Snarf, I’m not “outraged” but I I did see enough of this last night to be disgusted and turned it off, and not just because Martin Short is not funny. Suicide is not funny and mocking the tragic actions of such desperate, hurting people is pathetic. If someone you love takes their life, you might get it.

Not funny to those who have had a family member or friend kill themselves during the holidays. I hope those of you who think this is funny never have to find out why it is not.

My sister killed herself over the holidays and I LOVE this kind of humor, people take themselves way too seriously we all need to lighten up and songs like this remind me of that. Then again I have an extremely sick and perverted sense of humor in general.

Though a bit morbid, it is rather funny. I understand it can be offensive, which I understand too. I like how he points to at Letterman.

Dave, it’s not your humor that’s sick and perverted. It’s you. I don’t object to him singing this song, because I know I joke about things that were complete tragedies in other people’s lives… but having lived through a good friend killing himself at this time of year, I could never be so casual and cavalier about it like you are. I actually hope you just made up the fact that your sister committed suicide. My friend shot himself in the face with a shotgun and I found him, or what was left of him, in his living room, and then had to clean up for his parents when his body was taken away. Hearing this kind of reminded me of it all over again. And that’s fine. But to treat it the way you did is just… wrong (on so many different levels).

No I was not joking, my sister killed herself when she was 19. I can understand you not wanting to be reminded of your friend killing himself, but personally I’ve decided that I can’t control occaisonally being reminded of horrible things, in other words I can’t control society all I can control in myself. And myself has decided that I am not offended by this type of humor despite the fact that my sister ended her life around Christmas, and honestly I’m pretty sure she would have liked this song as well!

Suicide is natural. It is a responce to pain and suffering. I wanted a few years ago to put myself on a Cross on Good Friday in front of a Catheral 3 gallons on Gas and do a Bhuddist BBQ Yeah wanted to do it will a message still might
