'Better Off Ted': Lemurs and lawyers in lingerie

Which good Americans watched Better Off Ted last night? I want to see hands.

Ted’s daughter Rose, while at company day-care, started hearing rumors of employee firings — or as Veronica put it, “another round of down-sizing. There’s blood on the cheap industrial carpets.” Veronica starts pumping little Rose for the latest rumors she hears from the kids of employees. Why? Because in a neat twist on Veronica’s usual disregard for any human other than herself, she wants to save their jobs, because the firings “makes me look weak, like my people are expendable.”

I take it back — that was completely in keeping with Veronica’s usual disregard for any human other than herself.

Meanwhile, Lem gave in to some urges with one of the company’s lawyers:

And last night, Ted revived last season’s subplot about Linda wanting to write a children’s book. Except the cute little animal character she’d drawn, a lemur, looked like Phil, and Linda feared that Veridian would claim it owned the intellectual-property rights to anything inspired by the company — which in this case was Phil.

If Joseph Heller and J.D. Salinger were alive, they’d love Better Off Ted‘s mixture of prolix corporate satire, its critique e of phony benevolence. Oh, wait: J.D. Salinger is still alive.

J.D., did you watch Ted last night? I want to see a bony hand, please.

I leave you with Ted’s deathless line — “Hmm; tased flesh smells bacon-y” — and repeat:

Did you watch?

Hand! And they brought back the Veridian commercials, even though it was a bit on the lame side.

  • Christian

Of course! Best line was (paraphrased) “You know, comments like that and that candy house you keep in the forest are why there are rumors you eat children”

    • Bobby’s Robot

That was my fave line too. This show reminds me so much of the late, lamented “Andy Richter Controls the Universe”, also starring Jonathan Slavin.

  • Rock Golf

Hand! And my daughter goes to EW day care and overheard that the magazine wants to “get rid of Kentucky”. Does that make any sense?

    • Bryan

      hahahahaha…crude, but funny

My hand is sky-high. This show, by far, is the most hilarious show on television right now. And, I was wondering where the Veridian Dynamics commercials went. I’m glad they’re back. Right when you think the company has a heart, they take that imagined heart and beat it to a pulp…horrible, but hilarious.

My hand is definitely up. That was hysterical last night. Portia De Rossi has to get nominated for an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress for this show. Her “Children…so adorable. In a way, they’re like people” line was hysterical.

Lem’s storyline surprised me, but it was funny as hell, even when he was inadvertantly saying the wrong things to Nadine, it just kept turning her on. (and the actress who played her was pretty hot, too)

This show deserves to do better in the ratings than it does.

oooh me me me! I liked all the cannibal jokes lol

hand! love, love, love this show and worry for it’s future: no ratings OR awards show love (a la 30 rock)= danger.

I watched! Very funny. I’m really happy this show is back. I wonder why they don’t group it with the very funny Cougar Town and Modern Family on Wednesdays? I hear The Middle isn’t half bad, either. I don’t know what the fourth comedy is for ABC on Wednesday, but if they want to do me a favor, they’ll change it to BOT.

Funniest show ever! I hope they give it time to find an audience.

  • Luddite

    I watched!

I loved the cold open with Lem and Nadine making out in the elevator and Phil’s reaction. Then when she left, Phil said something to the effect of “i understand you couldn’t introduce us, with your tongue being down her throat and everything”. LOL.

    • Lu

And when Phil was relieved to learn that Lem actually knew the woman.

      I love Lem and Phil!!

    • Justin

I loved that part, too. And Phil’s reaction. That Veridian Dynamics commercial had me ROTFL!! Overall, the whole episode was hilarious!!

    • Johnification

I really enjoyed the Lem subplot, even if I thought it would resolve with Lem feeling icky for essentially paying for sex (turns out it was even better, he just couldn’t afford it!)

Hand! This show is so awesomely funny! Veronica is my hero….I love her!

  • s.c.

This show is great because while silly and hilarious, it taps into certain fears everyone has in the workplace. Veronica is a high powered businesswoman, but still fears looking weak to the men. Linda wanting so hard to leave the company for a better life, but not really knowing how to do it, simultaneously realizing how much she needs the company. This show back to back with Modern Family would be my nerd nirvana.

  • m.

Yes, I watched! My favorite line (I’m paraphrasing) : “If it were up to you it wouldn’t have been Schindler’s List, it would’ve been Schindler’s Guy.”

    • Tiffany

You beat me to it m. that was going to be the line I used. Portia DiRossi does not get enough credit for her comic chops.

      • J

No she doesn’t! She’s the main reason I starting watching the show! The great writing keeps me there!

      • Dave

Porta de Rossi was robbed out of a Golden Globe nomination! She’s the funniest woman on TV!

    • DS9Sisko

Actually it was “If it were up to you, it wouldn’t have been Schindler’s List, it would have been Schindler’s GUIDE.”

      • Mo

Come on, “guide” makes absolutely no sense. It was “guy”, because Ted wanted to stop after saving one person’s job. Oh, and HAND!

  • charlieromeobravo

I have just one thing to say: Hushaboom Technology! :)

    • val

Hushaboom Technology is the latest entree into my TV-fueled vocab.
