Golden Globes TV fresh-faces: 'Dexter,' 'True Blood,' and 'Good Wife' fans should be 'Glee'-ful!

The Golden Globes used to be the home of surprises, making the Emmy nominations seem stodgy. But with a few exceptions, this year’s TV nominees could have been predicted by anyone with a pay-cable subscription: True Blood, Dexter, Big Love, and (on basic cable) Mad Men dominated the Globes. Not that there’s anything wrong with those choices.

Still, I’m cheered by the some fresh faces and shows among the nominees:

• Julianna Margulies, for best drama actress in The Good Wife: yay, a 10 p.m. CBS network drama about grown-ups gets some recognition!

Modern Family and Glee in the comedy category: How great that Modern Family in particular, a show that found its great comic voice from the moment its pilot aired, should be selected for nomination so quickly by the Globes! And to have Matthew Morrison, who leads up Glee, nominated is a fine choice among so many comedy-series possibilities.

Dexter fans, sharpen a knife in celebration: John Lithgow (for his Trinity killer turn) joined previously-nominated Michael C. Hall and Dexter itself in being nominated!

• The comedy-category vote-of-confidence resides in Courtney Cox’s nomination for Cougar Town. That sitcom is wildly uneven, pretty clever, and Cox is, of course, a TV-awards favorite, but seeing her join the ranks of Edie Falco (hoo-ray: Nurse Jackie!) and Toni Colette (United States of Tara) is impressive. Even more impressive? The nomination of Glee’s Lea Michelle in the same category (Best Comedy Actress).

Hung: The freshman HBO dramedy got some Globes support — stars Thomas Jane and Jane Adams were both nominated!

As for the predictables, well, I’ll tell you right now, in any TV-movie/miniseries category, bet your mortgage on HBO’s Grey Gardens – that thing is catnip to any awards voter.

The same goes for Mad Men: While I hope True Blood, Dexter, and Big Love give it strong competition, this industry fave is going to be hard to beat as Best Drama. Same goes for Jon Hamm in the best-actor category.

I wish the supporting actors/actress categories didn’t lump comedy and drama together. Doesn’t seem fair.

  • dbiloo

Jon Hamm deserve to win. He was simply amazing in the last season of Mad Men.

  • Bismark

I don’t think Matthew Morrison was given any real moment to be funny for him to deserve his spot. I’d rather the nom went to Ty Burrell or Eric Stonestreet who are consistently hilarious on Modern Family… or even Ed O’Neill if we’re going to be strict about the “lead actor” issue.

    • crispy

The category is actually “Comedy or Musical.”

      • Bismark

        Huh. Point taken.

Matthew Morrison’s rapping skills were indeed Globes-worthy.

    • Oscar

I feel Matthew Morrison should definitely win. Not only is he a great singer, he is damn funny (see his Endless Love duet with Rachel). Plus unlike some of the other nominees in this catagory, Matthew has shown a full 360 of emotions on Glee.

    • Whatever

I agree Mathew Morrison is not the funniest character on Glee. However, he had really great dramatic scenes (the scene where he finds out about Terri’s fake pregnancy) that prove he’s a great actor – it just happened to be in a comedy series.

      • Varris

        Totally with you!
The category is “Best *Performance* by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy/Musical”

He may not have given the strongest comedic performance, but he’s been a integral part of the show’s success.

Jane Lynch- she just has to. She is catnip. Just in general. Her witticism are priceless.

  • Brooke

If there’s ever a year for Dexter to win, it’s this year. I love NPH like nothing else, but nobody on that supporting actor list came close to the amazingness that was John Lithgow as Trinity. Sorry, NPH, I’m throwing my support elsewhere this year, but I’ll be back next year.

I’m blanking on her name (I haven’t had my coffee yet), but the woman who plays Debra SO should have been nominated, too. She had so many great moments that she just nailed.

    • K

Jennifer Carpenter. And agree on all points.

      • Tamsin

I agree, Jennifer Carpenter was amazing this season and I really hope that John Lithgown wins. he was terrifying.

    • C

      exactly. Dexter for the win!

  • forg

Jim Parsons should have been nominated over Thomas Jane or Matthew Morrison IMO.

    • JC

Agreed! I’m disappointed that Jim Parsons was overlooked.

  • Alex

I think the Supporting categories should be split along Drama and Comedy. Those supp. actors are being shafted!

I am elated for the Hung nominations. I think the Glee ones were always on the cards, but I feel like Hung has been rather under-appreciated for its dark sense of humor.

As always, I lament the lack of recognition for Friday Night Lights. Sigh…

  • d

Can’t believe Lost was snubbed. Inexcusable.

    • lk

      • Annie

DITTO to the third power. I am happy that Emerson got a nod, though. His Ben Linus just gets better and better!

    • Whatever

      Probably next season.

    • Maddi

    • Nat

Is there a rule about nominating shows that came out before summer? No Lost or Breaking Bad when House gets a nom makes this list look bad.

  • BooRadley

Michael C. Hall should have won for best actor long ago.

    • JAC

Agreed! I love Jon Hamm, but no one can touch Michael C. Hall’s pure, raw, overwhelming talent.

    • Merideth

Totally agree. No one can top Hall’s performance particularly in the phenomenal 4th season. He has been overlooked for too long and hopefully this is his year. John Lithgow and Jennifer Carpenter are also superb.

    • C

Yes! This is so true–this actor has been great in all his roles!

  • hannah

I hope Glee, Matthew Morrison, True Blood, January Jones and Hugh Laurie win!

    • Nikki

January Jones is not deserving of a golden globe. To win something just for pouting or giving Draper the stink eye??? Katey Segal should have been nominated over Jones. IMO.

      • krg

You are so wrong about January Jones. She is fantastic in MAD MEN. Katey Segal is also fantastic and should have been nominated as well.

      • AL

explain to me why she does KRG?

      • hannah

Yes she is! Stop being bitter.

  • Lexie

Sons of Anarchy was shafted. I can’t believe the show didn’t get a single nomination. Katey Sagal deserved a nod; so did the show itself, and I would have loved to have seen other acting nominations. It’s so frustrating. Who nominates these things? The show is a ratings and critical success, and yet there is no love for it.

    • Lexie

No love come awards season, that is.

    • C

Another fabulous show. Katey Sagal is great in SOA.

  • Jack

I hope Lea Michele wins. She is consistently fabulous on Glee and outshines everyone she is in a scene with. Even when she’s in the background your eye goes straight to her.

  • Meredith

It hurts that Big Bang Theory was snubbed along with all of its cast (Hello? Jim Parson! Kaley Cuoco!) However I do love Glee and honestly Matthew Morrison is a really good actor. I’m also really excited to see Courteney Cox nominated, and in the future I hope to see Busy Phillips or Christa Miller nominated they’re both amazing on that show!

  • Lemon

I’m so excited for Lea Michele! I thought it was a long shot for her to get nominated, so I’m thrilled she snagged the nom. She deserves it! She’s equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, and I love that her character can be both boorish and vulnerable. Plus, a voice to DIE FOR. Yay Lea!

  • Tony

I’m very happy that Cox got nominated, as she very much deserved it, but I don’t think I’d call her an awards show favorite–she was the only friend not nominated for an Emmy, and has never been nominated for a Golden Globe either. Glad she’s finally getting her do though!

    • Yesenia

I was just about to say that. She was only nominated as part of the ensemble for SAG, but otherwise shut out from big awards. Definitely not a tv awards favorite, and if she couldn’t get recognized for being on a huge show like Friends, I don’t put her odds too good at get past this nomination to actually win for Cougar Town

    • Emma

I agree. I am very excited about her nomination because even though I love the show (“uneven”? Not true.)I haven’t heard to many critics singing her praises in particular although she obviously carries the whole thing.
