'Dexter' death: Was it a dream? Was Trinity not the killer?

I’m reading the comments on my review of last night’s holy-cow!-finale of Dexter, and I’m struck by how many people believe — or hope — Read the full post.

Its clear that Rita is dead. Next season I think they will have Deb notice that Harrison was left just like Dexter was, and she will become suspicious.

  • Matt

Rita is dead and Trinity did it. But I think next season will start with Dexter being the prime suspect in her murder. He has no alibi (I doubt he’ll tell his collegues he was killing Trinity at the time), Matsuka will think he has a motive (marriage problems because of the neighbor kiss), he has a temper (the karate knock down of Quinn) and he just found his borther was a serial killer (at least that’s what Deb thinks). At the very least, Deb will have doubts and the image of nice, dependable Dexter he uses as a shield will be gone.

    • ksoze

No way. This has Trinity all over it – it might be seen as a parting shot at Deb’s family for getting too close.

      • Joe

The question I have is the timeline of Trinity. From what I gathered Dexter went from the house to the auto shop and snuck into the car? So If Trinity was getting away how could Dexter of not known.

  • Dex Fan

She’s dead. Not a dream. I think an interesting season opener is Dexter trying to figure out how to hide the way Rita died. If she’s linked to Trinity, then Dexter is further linked to Trinity. Will Dexter be able to cut Rita up and dump her in the ocean, and then fake some sort of disappearance? Could he force Aster and Cody to deal with their mom’s disappearance? I can’t wait to see.

    • RunAwayItsBeck

Dexter will frame Aster for her mom’s killing. He doesn’t have time to deal with her smarmy Rita-like attitude, and he needs to get busy training cody and Harrison how to become killing machines!

      Thats sick!!! Even for Dexter.

    • Celia

Dexter would NEVER do that! He’s going to call the cops immediately. If he doesn’t then I won’t be able to see him in the same light. I will LOATHE him. He should NOT do that to those children.
He’s going to call the cops and then they’re all going to move to a new house because there’s no way they can live in that house now.

  • Cory

Trinity killed Rita. That is why he was so calm when Dexter was going to kill him. He knew that he had the last laugh.
Dexter can now go on with his darside and not worry about a wife to answer to.

I don’t watch Dexter, though this sounds very interesting. It seems a bit hypocritical from a magazine that disects Lost to death to declare to the Dexter viewers discussing what seems to be a major plot point that its ‘just a show.’ I mean, isn’t the point of your forums to discuss things like this?

  • telralph

Trinity let her blood out like Dexter let the oil out in the Mustang at the same time!

I wonder why everyone finds the death of Rita so surprising. When Dexter was pleading to Rita to get on the plane that morning and embraced her I said aloud to my husband “Rita will be dead by the end of this show”. It just seemed like their last embrace, I’m surprised no one else picked that up. Anyway, I’m sooo excited for next season. Arthur would be the suspect, I suppose, but the hair color, age, and the fact she’s a mother doesn’t fit with his MO, of course. And the authorities almost always suspect the spouse first, Dexter has no alibi. If he doesn’t up and leave the country I have no idea how he’ll get himself out of this one!!! DEXTER is the greatest and most well-produced thought-provoking show on television. Michael is a truly amazing Dexter (the polar opposite of David from Six Feet Under, lol) and John Lithgow ROCKED. True entertainment!

I said the same thing to my husband, they were really playing on the whole family thing and I knew it was going to end badly for Rita. Even so, I was shocked to actually see it. Its mind blowing and I have no idea where they’re going to go with this next season!

  • Scott

Matt season 2 dexter knows his brother was a killer ;) dexter killed him

  • Jo Anne

I believe Rita is dead; killed by Trinity. Harrison sitting in the pool of blood has got to be just a coincidence because there is no way Trinity had time to research Dexter’s past and sit Harrison there to mimic Dexter’s beginnings.

  • rayi

I thought it was a dream sequence as well, but if it is, are we going to have the same thing going on next season? Dexter juggling family life, work, and his dark passenger. Or perhaps a boring life with Dexter trying to be normal and things trying to pull him back to his “dark-passenger”.

Now, if Rita is dead-as much as some of us might miss her because she’s been on the show for awhile- I think it brings something new to the show as it does every season. I’m afraid if she is alive this show might get repetitive.

This ending couldn’t have been more perfect. And we all are going to speculate about what might happen next season and that’s what’s so good about this show.

  • howright

Big ending but I honestly think Rita needed to go after this season. The happy family thing was not fitting into Dexter’s big picture and let’s face it, she was really annoying this year!

What is it with moron television fans.

I am starting to think the medium is surpassing the intelligence of it’s audience.

Every time there is some great twist for any great television show, whether it is BSG, Lost, Dexter, or even comedies, I end up seeing fans analyzing and over analyzing the results of the episode when it is clear to everyone what happened.

    Deb killed Rita???

    Dexter killed Rita???

    Huh?

People need to a get a life.

It was obvious to everyone with half a brain that Rita was the final Trinity victim.

  • BK

Rita is dead, no dream sequence. He just had flashbacks to when He was in a poll of blood.
I think Dexter will have rage issues to the point of instability, his “Dark Passenger” will be darker, & he may get visits from Rita like he does from his father, just to keep him grounded.
This is my speculation for Season 5.

  • Scott

    cmon people
Dexter 4 seasons ago was a loner
he needed to fit in better and blend
Rita the kids and then the baby was balance
maybe more then he really needed but…….Dexter has come along way with emotion if anyone hasnt noticed and can balance emotion with killing as needed
i cant imagine him trying to blance work 3 kids one tahst a baby and killing by any code along the way
no rite would be worse for him then anything otherwise Dexter is worse off then he was in season 1 for blending in properly

    • rayi

The kids could be taken in by Rita’s parents.
But, you are right about Rita being the balance in Dexter’s life.
Guess we’ll have to wait to watch what happens next season.

  • alek

getting out of why trinity killed rita will be a challenge, but i think they will make the connection that trinity was trying to hurt deb (they assume he knew about her and lundy) by killing the only woman in her life that fits his target profile.

deb is going to put it all together though, the writing for her has shown her as getting smarter. i think it will drive her insane. she will have to be the one to kill dexter, and the one to become harry to harrison.

    • jen

Why would Deb kill Dexter and then guide his son to be exactly what he was?

    • Laura

I think Deb would be more likely to protect and defend Dexter, he has always been there for her, he killed his own brother to protect her. She might eventually find that out, too. I just really hope the entire series does not end with Dexter dead. That would suck.
